2022 Hyundai Tucson Reviews Summary

The redesigned 2022 Hyundai Tucson has to offer a high-tech cabin, comfortable ride, competent engine lineup, and spacious cargo area to keep up with the Joneses in the hot-selling and competitive compact SUV class. It does that, and more, with Hyundai giving plenty of compelling reasons to take the 2022 Tucson for a test drive.

2022 Kia Sorento Reviews Summary

Kia redesigned the popular Sorento last model year and for 2022 the midsize, three-row crossover SUV gets a few changes.

For starters, the appealing X-Line package is now available with S and EX trim in addition to the SX Prestige. All 2022 Kia Sorento models except for the base LX trim now have a standard 10.25-inch infotainment system with navigation and UVO connected services. Additionally, the top-of-the-line SX Prestige adds a more comfortable driver’s seat and heated second-row captain’s chairs as standard equipment.

The big news, however, pertains to a new all-wheel-drive option for the efficient Sorento Hybrid and the debut of the Sorento Plug-in Hybrid, which can travel 32 miles on electricity before switching to gas-electric hybrid propulsion and returning 34 mpg in combined driving.

Look and feel

2022 Hyundai Tucson

8/10

2022 Kia Sorento

10/10

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson received a fresh update that featured a significant redesign over its predecessors, bringing forth a bolder and more distinct visual character. The SUV's front showcased Hyundai's latest design language with a parametric grille cleverly integrating LED lights that created an eye-catching effect, reminiscent of the wings of an Aztec Spirit Bird when illuminated. Along the sides, the silver D-pillar and the floating roof added a contemporary flair, which was consistent with the aesthetic introduced in other models like the Elantra.

Contrastingly, the 2022 Kia Sorento exuded a toughened elegance, especially with the X-Line package. This addition transformed the Sorento into a more robust-looking vehicle, ready for adventures off the beaten path with rugged bumpers and a lifted suspension. The overall presence of the Sorento was not only modern but also luxurious, particularly in the tested SX Prestige spec that featured high-end details such as rust-colored leather and wolf gray paint.

Performance

2022 Hyundai Tucson

7/10

2022 Kia Sorento

8/10

The Tucson offered a choice between a standard 2.5-liter ICE engine producing 187 horsepower and a more exciting 1.6-liter turbocharged hybrid engine delivering a combined 226 horsepower. Especially noteworthy was the hybrid variant, which performed adequately even in challenging elevations, showcasing its robust nature. Fuel efficiency was also a strong point for the hybrid, achieving up to 37 mpg combined, which was a significant improvement over the ICE version.

On the other hand, the Sorento's base powertrain, a 2.5-liter engine with 191 horsepower, felt underwhelming. However, the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine available in higher trims offered a much more satisfactory 281 horsepower. This engine proved to be both potent and refined, with a dual-clutch transmission that enhanced the driving experience, making it feel sporty and agile. Although powerful, the turbocharged Sorento's fuel efficiency didn't impress, averaging around 20.5 mpg, which could be a downside for some buyers.

Form and function

2022 Hyundai Tucson

8/10

2022 Kia Sorento

9/10

In terms of interior space and functionality, both vehicles boasted well-thought-out interiors. The Hyundai Tucson was especially praised for its spacious interior, providing more passenger volume compared to its main competitors and a cargo space of 74.8 cubic feet, which was on par with other top contenders in the segment. The interior design was both practical and aesthetic, with touches that elevated its overall appeal.

The Sorento, while equally luxurious in its finishes, faced some practical challenges with its third-row seating, which was tight for adults. However, when not in use, the third-row could fold down to create a substantial 75.5 cubic feet of cargo space. The vehicle was equipped with thoughtful features like heated second-row captain's chairs and a smart tailgate, enhancing both comfort and convenience.

Technology

2022 Kia Sorento

6/10

Tech-savvy buyers would find both the Tucson and Sorento well-equipped. The Tucson offered an 8-inch standard infotainment system with options to upgrade to a 10.25-inch screen, although the larger screen required a physical connection for smartphone integration. The Sorento's technology followed similar lines but offered a standard 10.25-inch screen in most trims and required wired connections for smartphone integration.

Safety

2022 Hyundai Tucson

9/10

2022 Kia Sorento

9/10
Neither Hyundai nor Kia skimped on safety features. The Tucson came loaded with an array of driver-assist technologies, though it hadn't yet been rated by major safety organizations at the time. Sorento, however, not only offered comprehensive safety features but also boasted accolades from the IIHS as a Top Safety Pick and a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, making it a slightly more trustworthy choice regarding safety credentials.
