2022 Ford Explorer Reviews Summary

Two years ago, Ford redesigned its popular Explorer midsize three-row SUV. It moved to a rear-drive platform, added an optional hybrid powertrain, and offered everything from a value-rich base model to a luxurious Platinum trim level. Since then, Ford has added ST-Line, Timberline, and King Ranch trim levels while simultaneously honing the Explorer’s packaging to appeal to the broadest cross-section of Americans possible.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC Reviews Summary

It may be all-new for 2023, but the GLC's redesign is so conservative, it's hard to tell. Bigger changes can be found inside and the overall upgrades keep it at the top of the small luxury SUV class. The previous-generation GLC Coupe returns unchanged but replacements are in the works.

2022 Ford Explorer

8/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

The 2022 Ford Explorer offered a diverse lineup with eight models, ranging from $33,745 to $54,495, excluding a $1,495 destination charge. The Explorer King Ranch, our test vehicle, featured 4WD, Rapid Red paint, a Premium Technology package, and a twin-panel sunroof, bringing its MSRP to $59,880. Despite its King Ranch emblems and shiny 20-inch wheels, the top-trim Explorer didn't visually stand out much from other models. Its rear-drive platform allowed for a long hood and athletic appearance, while the interior boasted exclusive Del Rio leather seating with King Ranch branding. However, the cabin exhibited a mix of quality materials, occasionally reminding occupants of the Explorer's base trim.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, particularly the GLC 300, was redesigned, while the Coupe models carried over from the previous year. The new GLC 300 featured narrower taillights but retained a similar look to its predecessor, which had led the small luxury SUV class. Its interior received a significant makeover with a large vertical infotainment touchscreen and high-quality materials. The GLC Coupe maintained its first-generation interior, offering some usability advantages. Overall, the GLC-Class continued to exude traditional luxury, though it could have benefited from more distinctive styling.

Performance

2022 Ford Explorer

9/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

6/10

The 2022 Ford Explorer offered three powertrains. The base models came with a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It provided up to 24 mpg in combined driving and a towing capacity of 5,300 pounds. The hybrid drivetrain, available for the Limited and Platinum trims, combined a 3.3-liter V6 engine for 318 hp and 322 lb-ft of torque, achieving 27 mpg and towing up to 5,000 lbs. The twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine, standard on ST, Platinum, and King Ranch trims, delivered 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque, with a towing capacity of 5,600 lbs and 21 mpg in combined driving. The King Ranch 4WD test vehicle averaged 20.6 mpg. The Explorer's ride was robust, handling off-road terrain with ease, and offered an engaging driving experience.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 was powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, producing 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. It featured a nine-speed automatic transmission and RWD, with 4Matic AWD available. The GLC 300 accelerated smoothly, reaching 60 mph in 6.2 seconds. The brake pedal was soft but effective, and the suspension favored comfort over sporty handling. The GLC Coupe retained its older engine, matching the GLC 300's performance, while the AMG GLC 43 Coupe offered a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 with 385 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque, reaching 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. The GLC 300 provided a smooth ride and a quiet cabin.

Form and function

2022 Ford Explorer

7/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

The 2022 Ford Explorer provided ample comfort for families of four, with the option to carry five with a second-row bench seat. The third-row seat was best suited for children due to limited space. The King Ranch model featured triple-zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, and massaging front seats. The front seats were exceptionally comfortable, while the second-row seats were nearly as accommodating. However, the third-row seat was difficult for adults to access. The Explorer's cabin lacked practical storage, with limited pockets and cubbies. Cargo space measured 18.2 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 87.8 cubic feet with all seats folded.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC offered comfortable front seats with ample adjustment options. The synthetic leather upholstery was convincing, and real leather was available. The cabin featured a large center console bin, wireless charging pad, and cupholders, though the piano black lid attracted dust and fingerprints. The GLC provided sufficient space for taller passengers in the front, while the rear seats accommodated average adults. Cargo space measured 21.9 cubic feet, smaller than rivals, but adequate for most needs. The GLC Coupe's sloping roofline reduced cargo capacity to 17.6 cubic feet and rear headroom by 1.3 inches.

Technology

2022 Ford Explorer

6/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

5/10

The 2022 Ford Explorer featured two versions of the Sync 3 infotainment system, with an 8-inch or 10.1-inch touchscreen. The larger screen appeared as an afterthought, while the smaller screen integrated well with the interior. The King Ranch model included FordPass Connect, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 14-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system. However, the Sync 3 system's voice recognition was lacking, struggling with navigation and music requests. The King Ranch also offered a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation display and Active Park Assist 2.0.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC's interior boasted an 11.9-inch touchscreen with sharp graphics and immediate responses. However, its lower placement on the dash made it distracting to use. The MBUX infotainment system featured excellent voice recognition, though it interrupted audio playback. The new system lacked physical buttons, making adjustments more challenging. Standard connectivity included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with an available Burmester 3D Surround Sound system.

Safety

2022 Ford Explorer

10/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

The 2022 Ford Explorer earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, though NHTSA ratings were incomplete. It featured Ford Co-Pilot360, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring. Co-Pilot360 Assist+ added adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assist. The Explorer's safety systems operated smoothly, though the steering wheel sensitivity was occasionally frustrating.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC's crash-test results were unavailable, but it was expected to perform well based on Mercedes' reputation. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and a blind-spot monitor. The optional Driver Assistance package added adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist. The GLC Coupe shared similar safety features, with cross-traffic alerts and a surround-view camera as standard.
