2021 Toyota 4Runner Reviews Summary

Despite its design age, poor fuel economy, rough ride, iffy handling, and marginal safety ratings, the current-generation Toyota 4Runner remains a popular choice in a midsize SUV. Why? Its reputation for reliability and resale value, coupled with its undeniable utility, rugged image, and go-anywhere and do-anything capability, are the selling points. And if that's why you want a 2021 Toyota 4Runner, it won't disappoint you as long as you accept its shortcomings.

2022 Lincoln Navigator Reviews Summary

Sometimes, only a full-size SUV will do. Among the handful of large luxury models available, the 2022 Lincoln Navigator stands apart with its classically elegant design, robust towing capacity, and soothing comfort in all three rows of seats.

For the 2022 Navigator, Lincoln makes numerous changes to update the SUV’s styling, comfort, technology, safety, and driving dynamics. To experience the changes first-hand, we headed to Scottsdale, Arizona following a cold snap of winter weather. In short, the facelift has revived the aging Navigator, keeping it competitive against newer rivals.

2021 Toyota 4Runner

6/10

2022 Lincoln Navigator

8/10

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner retained much of its original design from over a decade ago, with only minor updates over the years. Its rugged, utilitarian appearance, characterized by a two-box body and flared fenders, remained largely unchanged, offering a timeless style that emphasized functionality over aesthetics. The 4Runner was available in several trims, including the SR5, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro, with special editions like the Trail Special Edition. Pricing ranged from $36,950 to $50,570, with the Trail Special Edition starting at $38,565 for the RWD model. The interior featured durable materials, a traditional dashboard with large controls, and a simple, reliable design that appealed to those seeking a long-lasting vehicle.

In contrast, the 2022 Lincoln Navigator underwent subtle styling changes, including new headlights, taillights, and a restyled front end. While the new grille design was reminiscent of an Audi, it did not enhance the Navigator's elegance. However, the interior continued to impress with high-quality materials and a mid-century modern design, featuring Lincoln's Constellation display theme. The Navigator offered a new Sync 4 infotainment system with a larger 13.2-inch touchscreen, enhancing its technological appeal. Available in standard and long-wheelbase styles, the Navigator's pricing started at $78,405, with the Black Label trim reaching $106,530. The Navigator's updates, including improved suspension and braking systems, contributed to a more refined driving experience.

Performance

2021 Toyota 4Runner

6/10

2022 Lincoln Navigator

8/10

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner was equipped with a 4.0-liter V6 engine producing 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. It offered a part-time 4WD system, with a maximum tow rating of 5,000 pounds. The 4Runner excelled off-road, thanks to features like A-Trac, a locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select, and Crawl Control. However, on paved roads, it felt slow and cumbersome, with heavy steering and clunky handling. Fuel economy was a concern, with an EPA rating of 17 mpg combined, and our test averaging 16.8 mpg.

The 2022 Lincoln Navigator featured a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque, mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. It offered both RWD and 4WD options, with a towing capacity between 8,100 and 8,700 pounds. The Navigator's adaptive-damping suspension, with Road Preview technology, provided a smooth ride, even on imperfect roads. The new electronic brake booster improved braking feel and response. During testing, the Navigator averaged 18.6 mpg, slightly better than its EPA rating of 18 mpg combined.

Form and function

2022 Lincoln Navigator

10/10

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner offered a high seating position, which could be challenging for shorter passengers without running boards. The interior was comfortable, with supportive seats and ample legroom in the rear. A third-row seat was optional, but our test vehicle featured a sliding cargo deck instead. Cargo space measured up to 47.2 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 89.7 cubic feet with them folded down, complemented by a large roof rack for additional storage.

The 2022 Lincoln Navigator boasted exceptionally comfortable 30-way power-adjustable front seats, with heating, ventilation, and massage functions. The second-row captain's chairs also offered similar features, enhancing passenger comfort. The third-row seat provided ample space, thanks to the independent rear suspension design. Cargo capacity was generous, with 19.3 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 103.3 cubic feet with the second row folded. The long-wheelbase Navigator L offered even more space, making it ideal for larger families.

Technology

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner Trail Special Edition came with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, offering Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. It included a premium audio upgrade with dynamic navigation and voice recognition. While the system was functional, it lacked the sophistication of more modern setups. The 4Runner also featured a windshield wiper de-icer and a 120-volt AC power outlet in the cargo area.

The 2022 Lincoln Navigator introduced a new Sync 4 infotainment system with a 13.2-inch touchscreen, supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The system was user-friendly, with customizable settings and a responsive voice recognition system. The Navigator also offered an upgraded Lincoln Play rear-seat entertainment system with Amazon Fire TV, providing access to popular streaming services. The 28-speaker Revel 3D audio system delivered an exceptional listening experience.

Safety

2021 Toyota 4Runner

3/10

2022 Lincoln Navigator

8/10

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner included Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P), featuring adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. However, it lacked blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic warning. The 4Runner received mixed safety ratings, with a three-star rollover resistance rating from the NHTSA and a "Marginal" rating for driver protection in small overlap frontal impacts from the IIHS.

The 2022 Lincoln Navigator introduced new driver assistance systems, including Intersection Assist, Road Edge Detection, Active Park Assist 2.0, and ActiveGlide. A surround-view camera system became standard. ActiveGlide, Lincoln's semi-autonomous driving technology, allowed for hands-free driving on approved highways. While the system performed well, it required constant driver attention. These advancements represented steps toward fully autonomous driving, though driver vigilance remained essential.
