2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Reviews Summary

Shoppers have no shortage of luxury SUVs to choose from, but the 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport truly stands out. It offers luxury in spades but, like all Land Rovers, it also boasts impressive off-road capabilities. The ability to sludge through mud and dirt may seem superfluous, although well-heeled Land Rover customers may still need to park in muddy polo grounds or venturing out to a remote ski lodge. The Range Rover Sport goes even further with composed and dynamic on-road handling. The result is an opulent SUV with almost no downsides.

2022 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

Hyundai’s Genesis luxury brand has only been around for about five years, but it’s progressed so much in that time it seems like much longer than that. Genesis has quickly gone from selling two repurposed Hyundai sedans to fielding a full lineup of luxury cars and creating a distinct identity through bold design.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 is the brand’s latest effort. Not to be confused with the Genesis G70 sedan, the GV70 is a crossover SUV positioned below the recently-launched Genesis GV80 in size and price, meaning it competes with the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Volvo XC60, and numerous other small luxury SUVs. As with the larger GV80 and the Genesis sedans, the challenge for the GV70 will be convincing new-car buyers to abandon familiar nameplates for something they might not have heard of.

The GV70 launches with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and optional 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6. The four-cylinder is available with Standard, Select, Advanced, and Sport Prestige trim levels, while the V6 engine is available with all trim levels except the Select. Our test car was a GV70 3.5T, a range-topping AWD Sport Prestige model with the 3.5-liter V6.

Look and feel

2022 Genesis GV70
9/10

The 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport, despite being in its second generation since its 2005 launch, maintained a modern and luxurious appeal. The 2018 refresh, which carried over into 2021, introduced a dual-screen center console that became a hallmark of Land Rover interiors. This model offered a variety of trims, from the base SE with leather upholstery and dual-zone climate control, to the high-end Autobiography with 22-way power-adjustable front seats and power soft-close doors. The SVR performance model stood out with a powerful V8 engine and sport seats, while the SVR Carbon Edition added carbon fiber accents and 22-inch alloy wheels.

The 2022 Genesis GV70, while borrowing some styling cues from other Genesis models, presented a unique and striking appearance. It featured quad LED headlights and taillights, a large shield-shaped grille, and a sloping roofline that gave it a sleek, fastback look. The Sport Prestige model added character with its unique front fascia, 21-inch wheels, and dark chrome trim. Inside, the GV70 boasted an elliptical theme inspired by an airplane wing, with a minimalistic design and a rotary gear selector. The interior offered a variety of color options and luxurious materials, though base models came with leatherette seats.

The 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport offered a range of powertrains, starting with the base P360 mild-hybrid system, which combined a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine with a 48-volt electrical system, producing 355 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. The HST model featured a more powerful P400 version, delivering 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. The HSE Silver Edition offered plug-in hybrid and diesel options, with the P400e plug-in hybrid generating 398 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque. The HSE Dynamic and Autobiography trims boasted a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine with 518 hp and 461 lb-ft of torque, while the SVR and SVR Carbon Edition models had an even more potent version, producing 575 hp and 516 lb-ft. All models came with an eight-speed automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel drive, along with height-adjustable air suspension and a Terrain Response system. The Range Rover Sport excelled off-road and offered impressive towing capabilities, with most variants able to tow up to 7,716 pounds.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 came with two engine options: a base 2.5-liter turbo-four producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 generating 375 hp and 391 lb-ft. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The GV70 featured a rear electronic limited-slip differential and launch control, emphasizing its sporty character. The Sport+ drive mode enhanced throttle response and transmission behavior for spirited driving, though the chassis and steering lacked the sharpness of some competitors. The GV70 was more comfortable on highways, but its firm ride and lack of solidity detracted from its luxury feel.

Form and function

2022 Genesis GV70

The 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport offered a maximum of 63.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded, and 31.7 cubic feet with the second row in use. An optional third row increased seating capacity to seven, though it provided only 10.8 cubic feet of cargo space when in use. The first and second rows offered ample headroom and legroom, while the third row was best suited for children.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 provided 28.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats in place, and 56.9 cubic feet with them folded. While it didn't lead the segment in interior space, it offered adequate legroom and good rear-seat visibility. The daring interior design compromised storage space, with a slim center console and thin door pockets. The front seats in the Sport Prestige model were heavily bolstered, offering heating, ventilation, massage, and posture-assist functions, though some controls were buried in touchscreen menus.

The 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport featured a dual-screen center console, with the lower screen handling climate controls and vehicle settings, and the upper screen housing the infotainment system. While the system had a learning curve and some bugs in earlier models, it offered Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The system's saving grace was the pair of dials integrated into the lower screen, which controlled various functions.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 boasted a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The tile-based layout and crisp graphics made it user-friendly, while the glass rotary controller added functionality. Higher trims offered a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 3D effect and a 12-inch head-up display. The GV70 also featured a digital-key system, a fingerprint scanner, and a high-tech rear-seat monitor. Genesis Connected Services provided additional features like remote camera activation and cloud-based driver profiles.
