2021 Land Rover Range Rover Reviews Summary

The inimitable automotive journalist John Pearley Huffman once referred to the Land Rover Range Rover as the “Montecito Camry.” He’s right. Within the confines of this money-drenched enclave near Santa Barbara, California, you are more likely to see a Range Rover prowling the streets than you are Toyota’s popular family sedan. But, if you’ve ever spent any time in a modern Range Rover, you know why it is the SUV of choice for the truly wealthy.

2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Reviews Summary

Shoppers have no shortage of luxury SUVs to choose from, but the 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport truly stands out. It offers luxury in spades but, like all Land Rovers, it also boasts impressive off-road capabilities. The ability to sludge through mud and dirt may seem superfluous, although well-heeled Land Rover customers may still need to park in muddy polo grounds or venturing out to a remote ski lodge. The Range Rover Sport goes even further with composed and dynamic on-road handling. The result is an opulent SUV with almost no downsides.

2021 Land Rover Range Rover

9/10

2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

9/10

The 2021 Land Rover Range Rover had evolved significantly from its utilitarian roots, transforming into a symbol of luxury and sophistication. Once a rugged workhorse, it had become a vehicle that offered opulent features like heated, ventilated, and massaging seats wrapped in premium leather. The Range Rover's design, despite nearing a decade in age, remained timeless with its sleek lines and hallmark design cues. Inside, the cabin exuded luxury with its high-contrast, mid-century modern ambiance, although the infotainment system was not as advanced as newer models.

In contrast, the 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport, which launched its second generation in 2014, had undergone a refresh in 2018 that carried over into 2021. This refresh introduced a dual-screen center console that became a defining feature of Land Rover interiors. The Range Rover Sport offered a variety of trims, each with its own set of luxurious features, from leather upholstery and premium sound systems to advanced climate control and seating options. The Sport model also provided a more dynamic driving experience with its performance-oriented trims and powerful engine options.

2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

10/10

The 2021 Land Rover Range Rover offered a range of powertrain options, including turbodiesel V6, supercharged V8, mild-hybrid, and plug-in hybrid choices. The HSE Westminster special edition featured a mild-hybrid turbocharged inline-six engine, delivering 395 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. It came with a standard four-wheel drive system and a two-speed transfer case, ensuring its off-road capabilities. The Range Rover's adaptive air suspension provided a smooth ride, although its steering was somewhat slow and syrupy. Fuel economy was rated at 20 mpg combined, with our test achieving 18.5 mpg.

The 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport also offered a variety of powertrains, starting with the base P360 mild-hybrid powertrain, which produced 355 horsepower. The HST model featured a more potent P400 version with 395 horsepower. The Sport's HSE Dynamic and Autobiography trims boasted a supercharged V8 engine with 518 horsepower, while the SVR models had an even more powerful version with 575 horsepower. All models came with an eight-speed automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel drive. The Sport's air suspension and Terrain Response system provided impressive off-road capabilities and cornering abilities. Towing capacity varied, with most models capable of towing up to 7,716 pounds.

2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

6/10
The 2021 Land Rover Range Rover featured an air suspension with a kneel mode for easier access, though the second-row seating was less comfortable due to limited thigh support and a slouched seating position. Storage space was limited, with a maximum cargo capacity of 59.8 cubic feet. The Range Rover Sport, on the other hand, offered more cargo space, with a maximum of 63.7 cubic feet. It also had an optional third row, increasing seating capacity to seven, though the third row was best suited for children. Both the first and second rows provided ample space and comfort.

The 2021 Land Rover Range Rover's technology included a fully digital instrumentation and infotainment system with three displays. The InControl Touch Pro Duo system, while not entirely intuitive, could be navigated with some practice. The Range Rover Sport's interior was dominated by a dual-screen center console, with the lower screen handling climate controls and vehicle settings, and the upper screen managing infotainment. The system had a learning curve but offered useful features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Both vehicles had advanced technology options, though the Range Rover Sport's system was more user-friendly.
