2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA Reviews Summary

In recent years, first-time luxury shoppers have had plenty of choices, but those choices haven't always been great. In the past decade, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi have offered “fun-size” subcompact luxury cars and crossovers. But “subcompact” is typically synonymous with “budget,” and the German Big Three have had a hard time rectifying “small” with “upscale.” Look no further than the woeful Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class or the underwhelming BMW X1. These cars might have luxury badges on their hoods, but they hardly live up to them.

As subcompact luxury cars go, a “4-door coupe” like the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class makes a lot more sense than I initially expected. For commuters and first-time luxury buyers who simply want a comfortable place to sit on their way to work, and who occasionally need a backseat for guests or kids, the CLA makes more sense than paying a premium for a crossover or larger sedan. It has the lines of a coupe but is more sensible than one.

The CLA has been redesigned for 2020, and as Mercedes has unveiled a more affordable A-Class sedan, the CLA is no longer the most affordable vehicle in the German luxury brand’s US lineup. This allows the CLA to grow in new and interesting ways, becoming a more dramatic performance luxury car. Read on to learn if the CLA-Class is the right choice for your first luxury car as well as which specific trim CarGurus recommends.

2021 Chevrolet Corvette Reviews Summary

If you never drove one along a palm-lined California beach on a warm evening as the sun dips into the sea, it would be easy to dismiss the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible as money foolishly spent. But even though the Corvette Stingray Coupe comes with a removable targa roof panel that stows in the trunk, it can’t quite match the droptop for downright convenience or a thrillingly visceral driving experience. But you’ll give up a few things in exchange.

Look and feel

2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA

10/10

2021 Chevrolet Corvette

9/10

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class captured attention with its elegant exterior design, where the headlights were notably slimmer and more refined than its predecessor's eagle-eye units. Designed to resemble its larger sibling, the CLS, these wedge-like headlights contributed to a more cohesive and upscale appearance. The roof and trunk design bore resemblance to the S-Class Coupe (formerly the CL-Class), offering a boat-like aesthetic that, while reducing some functionality, added a dramatic flair befitting a luxury vehicle.

Inside, the CLA treated occupants to a modern, opulent cabin. A multi-tiered dashboard and vintage-inspired climate vents created a visually interesting environment. Enhanced by ambient cabin lighting that dynamically changed with climate control settings, the cabin felt alive, especially at night. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment screen stretched across two-thirds of the dashboard, merging to appear as one seamless unit. The brushed aluminum panels and complementary steering wheel brightwork imparted a sense of timeless luxury.

Variants included the CLA 250 and CLA 250 4Matic, as well as the performance-focused AMG CLA 35 4Matic and 45 4Matic. Standard on the CLA 250 were LED headlights, 18-inch wheels, a panoramic moonroof, and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Our test model featured the AMG appearance package, a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, and an ambient lighting package, among other premium options.

In contrast, the exterior of the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible was marked by striking flying buttresses behind each seat, setting it apart from the Coupe, especially when the targa roof panel was removed. The power retractable hardtop offered convenience, retracting in 18 seconds and raising in 22 seconds, all while seated. With the top down, the engine’s roar and exhaust sounds were magnified, providing an exhilarating experience.

While the convertible eliminated issues related to handling the targa panel, it did have downsides. Visibility was compromised with the top down, making it hard to spot traffic behind the car. Furthermore, the rear camera mirror became non-functional, limiting assistance when reversing. The convertible also lacked the illuminated engine bay visible in the Coupe, a notable feature especially at night.

Despite these trade-offs, both Corvette models delivered exceptional performance, and the Convertible’s standout features included a lower cost compared to competing exotics, starting at $66,400. Our Torch Red 2LT test vehicle came with desirable additions such as the Z51 Performance Package and a front suspension lift, totaling $84,570.

Performance

2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA

9/10

2021 Chevrolet Corvette

9/10

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class offered four powertrain configurations. Both CLA 250 variants came with a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, delivering 221 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Power was sent either to the front wheels or all four wheels in the CLA 250 4Matic we tested. This engine provided substantial power for the car’s size, particularly excelling at higher speeds with the turbo fully engaged. The optional lowered suspension transformed the CLA into an agile driver's car.

Despite the sporty suspension, the CLA maintained a commendable balance between handling precision and ride comfort. Its light but sophisticated steering and supple cornering abilities made it an enjoyable car to drive without sacrificing everyday usability. Fuel economy was respectable, with the CLA 250 4Matic achieving 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.

For the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette, the Z51 Performance Package and performance exhaust system boosted its 6.2-liter V8 engine output to 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. This mid-engine setup ensured rapid acceleration and a thrilling drive. The 8-speed dual-clutch transmission provided smooth and swift gear changes, contributing to the vehicle's engaging character.

The Corvette's driving dynamics were tailored for both everyday usability and spirited driving. Multiple driving modes allowed for customization, while features like the front suspension lift with a GPS memory function aided in navigating tricky inclines without damaging the car's nose. The Z51 Package included high-performance brakes, adaptive dampers, and an electronic limited-slip rear differential, optimizing the Corvette’s performance capabilities.

Even the Corvette's visibility was carefully considered. The forward view, framed by prominent fender swells, enhanced road awareness and safety. The vehicle's dynamics and the finely tuned suspension provided a nearly transcendent driving experience.

Form and function

2021 Chevrolet Corvette

While the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class prided itself as a coupe, its four-door design and tight back seat made it more of a sedan with limited functionality. Adults found the rear seats uncomfortable for long journeys, mainly due to the low roofline. The sport bucket seats upfront offered adequate bolstering but had fixed headrests, which could become uncomfortable on long trips. Trunk capacity stood at 13.1 cubic feet, with foldable backseats to accommodate larger items.

On the other hand, the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette’s interior emphasized driver-centered ergonomics and sporty aesthetics. Despite potential redesign rumors, the Corvette’s unique cockpit featured a digital instrumentation panel, an angled 8-inch touchscreen, and a distinctive squarish steering wheel. The GT2 seats in our test vehicle, upholstered in premium Nappa leather, offered heating and ventilation for maximum comfort. Storage was surprisingly practical, with a combined 12.6 cubic feet of cargo space across the rear trunk and front well.

Technology

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class featured the latest MBUX infotainment system, combining a touchscreen and trackpad controller with a host of modern functionalities. Steering-wheel-mounted controls included small pads for operating digital screens, making it easy to navigate the infotainment options. MBUX also boasted an advanced voice-control system activated by the phrase, “Hey, Mercedes.” However, the move to exclusively USB-C ports highlighted a push towards newer tech standards, which might inconvenience those with traditional USB cables.

For the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette, the technology suite was impressive. A configurable 12-inch digital display and an 8-inch touchscreen provided intuitive operation. The 2LT trim offered a head-up display, and the infotainment system included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. With navigation, enhanced voice recognition, and a 14-speaker Bose audio system, the Corvette catered to tech-savvy drivers. The Performance Data Recorder further enabled drivers to capture their experiences with a 1080p video overlay.

Safety

2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA

7/10

2021 Chevrolet Corvette

4/10

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class came equipped with a comprehensive set of driver-assistance features. Yet, the lane-keeping assist was criticized for its abrupt and jarring intervention, which could be misconstrued as a vehicle malfunction. Other safety features included forward-collision avoidance, automatic high beams, and a driver-drowsiness monitor. A surround-view camera added a layer of convenience, automatically activating at low speeds during parking maneuvers.

In comparison, the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette prioritized driving enjoyment over advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Missing features like adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking hinted at Chevrolet’s belief that the Corvette's essence should remain driver-centric. However, visibility enhancements such as a front-facing camera and blind-spot monitoring were available on higher trims. The Teen Driver technology and Chevrolet Connected Services added layers of safety and connectivity.
