2020 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Depending on who you ask, the modern SUV will continue to dominate the new-car market until it's the only type of vehicle on the road (except pickup trucks). That prediction makes sense; modern SUVs drive like cars, can get through most snowstorms, and have the cargo space to tackle most of what daily life throws at them. They are great all-around vehicles, but in trying to master everything, many have lost the specialization that made them noteworthy in the first place. In particular, many luxury SUVs have lost their off-road credibility.

There are exceptions to this trend, including upmarket trims of the Jeep Grand Cherokee as well as most of the Land Rover lineup. Another brand that bucks the trend is Lexus. Sure, the Lexus RX pretty much created the modern luxury crossover, but it gets sold right alongside the immensely capable Lexus LX and this vehicle: the 2020 Lexus GX.

You’ll be forgiven if you forgot the GX was still available. Lexus has updated the GX for 2020 with fresh styling to make it a bit more memorable. Still, beneath that new exterior is one of the oldest vehicles offered today, and as you’ll learn, that has its advantages.

2020 Volkswagen Tiguan Reviews Summary

The Volkswagen Tiguan is one of only two compact crossover SUV’s that currently offer third-row seating. (And the other is the hopelessly outdated Mitsubishi Outlander.) To fit the extra pair of surprisingly spacious seats, VW made the Tiguan much larger than average for its competitive set—which suits a vehicle that fills big shoes in VW dealerships. With five trim levels and prices that stretch from just under $26,000 to a bit over $40,000, the Tiguan is the German brand’s best-selling vehicle in the U.S.

2020 Lexus GX

7/10

2020 Volkswagen Tiguan

8/10

The 2020 Lexus GX, despite its age, continued to sport the distinctive hourglass grille design that had become a hallmark of the Lexus lineup. This design, while controversial on some models, seemed to fit the GX better than its larger sibling, the LX. The GX's exterior updates were minimal, maintaining a decade-old design that shared its rugged platform with the Toyota 4Runner. This connection to the 4Runner meant the GX retained its off-road capability, a feature that outweighed the need for frequent updates in the eyes of many enthusiasts.

Inside, the GX's cabin was a throwback to the early 2010s, with a large, chunky center console and big buttons that were operable even with work gloves. This old-school approach worked well for a rugged SUV, though it lacked the modern touches found in newer models. The GX was available in three trims: the 460, 460 Premium, and 460 Luxury, each offering a range of features from leather upholstery and a power sunroof to advanced navigation and rear-seat entertainment systems. CarGurus recommended the base 460 trim for its well-rounded standard features.

The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan, redesigned in 2018, addressed previous size and price concerns, making it a more competitive option in the compact crossover segment. The Tiguan's exterior design was clean and conservative, with a horizontal grille and simple lines that epitomized contemporary Volkswagen styling. This straightforward approach had its own appeal, avoiding the aggressive or cartoonish looks of some competitors.

Inside, the Tiguan's cabin was more utilitarian, with dull surfaces and hard black plastic that fell short of Volkswagen's past interior excellence. However, the focus on electronics was evident, with an optional digital dashboard and a glass-covered touchscreen infotainment system that stood out for its responsiveness and clarity. The Tiguan's interior might have been plain, but it was functional and featured advanced tech that kept it competitive in its class.

The 2020 Lexus GX 460 was powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine, producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. This power was delivered through a 6-speed automatic transmission to a standard 4-wheel drive system. While these figures might not have been impressive compared to modern V6 or turbocharged 4-cylinder engines, the V8 provided a unique driving experience with its smooth power delivery. The GX's steering, though initially light, proved to be direct and responsive, making it manageable on both highways and off-road trails.

The GX's self-leveling air suspension contributed to a smooth and composed ride, capable of handling potholes and bumps with ease. The 4WD system, combined with various off-road modes and adjustable suspension settings, made the GX a formidable off-road vehicle. It could tow up to 6,500 pounds and had a tight turning radius of 19 feet, making it surprisingly practical for urban driving. However, its fuel economy was a drawback, with an average of 16.3 mpg observed during testing.

The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan was equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. This engine was paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, driving either the front or all four wheels. The Tiguan's powertrain was tuned for torque, providing a snappy throttle response and minimal turbo lag. However, its larger size and weight meant it was only moderately quick, and passing on the highway required some patience.

The Tiguan's handling was affected by its longer wheelbase, making it less nimble than some competitors. Its suspension was soft, ensuring a comfortable ride even on rough roads. The drive mode selector allowed for adjustments, but the steering remained light even in sport mode. While not the most fun to drive, the Tiguan's size advantage made it a practical choice for those needing extra space.

Form and function

2020 Volkswagen Tiguan

The 2020 Lexus GX offered second-row captain's chairs on the Premium and Luxury trims, with the latter also featuring power-folding third-row seats. These captain's chairs provided easier access to the third row and created a natural barrier between passengers. However, the third row was less accessible for adults, highlighting the GX's limitations compared to more family-friendly crossovers. With all rear seats folded, the GX provided 64.7 cubic feet of cargo space, which was less than some competitors. The side-opening rear hatch was unique but not particularly advantageous, though the separately opening rear window was a useful feature.

The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan excelled in practicality, with a second row that could slide up to seven inches, making the third row more usable. While the third row was not spacious, it was adequate for shorter adults and children. Front-drive Tiguans came standard with the third row, while AWD models offered it as an option. The second row's ability to fold flat provided 65.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the third row collapsed, and 73.5 cubic feet in two-row models. The Tiguan's interior felt roomy, with plenty of hip and shoulder room in the front seats and a seating position that enhanced the sense of space.

The 2020 Lexus GX's infotainment system showed its age, with a simpler, true touchscreen interface that avoided the frustrating Lexus Remote Touch system. While it lacked Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the straightforward layout was appreciated by those who preferred simplicity over modern complexity.

The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan featured the MIB II infotainment system, which was set to be replaced by MIB3 the following year. Despite this, the current system was one of the best on the market, with a responsive 8-inch touchscreen available on higher trims. The Tiguan also offered a digital cockpit, customizable instrument panel, and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. USB ports and a wireless charging pad provided ample connectivity options, while the Car-Net telematics package connected the vehicle to an owner's smartphone for additional functionality.

Safety

6/10

The 2020 Lexus GX came standard with the Lexus Safety System+, which included forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring and a surround-view camera were also available. The GX's great visibility, thanks to its high seating position and large windows, added to its safety credentials.

The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan improved its standard safety package with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. However, features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance were reserved for the top SEL trim. The Tiguan also offered Car-Net, a telematics package with remote locking, status checks, and vehicle location. The IIHS rated the Tiguan a Top Safety Pick for SEL Premium models with LED headlights, while most models with halogen headlights received a poor rating.
