2020 Jeep Compass Reviews Summary

More than any other brand, Jeep embodies the romance of adventure and the resilience of the American spirit. Owning one is a lifestyle and values statement, making a Jeep an aspirational source of personal pride. But as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles seeks to capitalize on Jeep’s extraordinary appeal by offering more affordable pathways to ownership, does it run the risk of diluting its cachet with models like the Mexico-sourced 2020 Compass? That depends on whether you’re buying this little Jeep for the image or its actual utility.

2021 Honda CR-V Reviews Summary

Even in a grim year, Honda is selling a staggering number of CR-Vs. The CR-V is the best-selling Honda by far. It’s also the second best-selling compact SUV, just behind the Toyota RAV4. And it's the fifth best-selling vehicle in the U.S., and if you take out all the commercial sales of full-size pickups it’s one of the two best-selling vehicles year in and year out.

So it’s hard to argue against the CR-V formula. Honda’s been at this almost as long as crossovers have been a thing, launching the CR-V in 1997—a year after the RAV4 debuted.

The funny thing is, aside from sales volume, there’s only one thing the CR-V particularly excels at. Aesthetics are subjective, but it would be hard to argue the CR-V is the best looking vehicle in its class. It’s not the cheapest. It’s not the best equipped, especially at the middle to lower trim levels. It’s not the fastest, nor is it the quietest, or the most fuel efficient. It’s not even the most reliable, showing up nowhere in J.D. Power's Most Reliable list.

So what makes it so appealing to American consumers? Let’s see if we can figure that out.

2020 Jeep Compass

7/10

2021 Honda CR-V

6/10

The 2020 Jeep Compass was a handsome SUV, drawing inspiration from the refined styling of the Grand Cherokee. It was available in four core trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk, with various packages and special edition upgrades to enhance the lineup. The base model started at $22,280, while a fully loaded Compass Limited with AWD and numerous options could reach $39,755. Despite its attractive design and upscale features, the Compass was marred by cost-cutting measures, such as low-quality plastic parts, which detracted from its overall appeal. Nevertheless, it was a significant improvement over the original Compass model.

In contrast, the 2021 Honda CR-V had a more generic appearance, similar to many other compact crossovers. While it lacked distinctive styling, it offered a few unique details, such as the grille opening and chromed plastic features. The CR-V was available in eight colors, though most were shades of gray, black, or white, with more vibrant options limited to higher trims. Inside, the CR-V featured a modern design with angular seats and upscale materials, especially in higher trims. Despite its lack of standout looks, the CR-V's design was functional and practical, catering to those prioritizing utility over aesthetics.

Performance

2020 Jeep Compass

5/10

2021 Honda CR-V

6/10

The 2020 Jeep Compass was powered by a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, known as the Tigershark, producing 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. However, its performance was underwhelming, with sluggish acceleration and a noisy engine. The nine-speed automatic transmission often shifted harshly, and the vehicle averaged 23.1 mpg, falling short of its EPA rating. While the Compass excelled in off-road capabilities, especially in the Trailhawk trim, its on-road dynamics were less impressive, with heavy steering and a sensitive brake pedal.

The 2021 Honda CR-V featured a 190-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, providing smooth and steady acceleration. It reached 60 mph in about 7.8 seconds, comparable to its competitors. The CR-V's continuously variable transmission (CVT) offered a less engaging driving experience compared to rivals with conventional transmissions. Standard FWD and optional AWD were available, with the CR-V's suspension providing decent handling and ride quality. While not thrilling, the CR-V's performance was reliable and predictable, making it a solid choice for everyday driving.

Form and function

2020 Jeep Compass

8/10

2021 Honda CR-V

8/10

The 2020 Jeep Compass offered a comfortable interior with the Luxury Seat Group, featuring premium leather, ventilated front seats, and a power-adjustable front passenger seat. The back seat was spacious, with air conditioning vents and charging ports for rear passengers. However, its cargo capacity was unremarkable, with 27.2 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 59.8 cubic feet with the seats folded. Limited storage space and awkward cupholders added to the inconvenience.

The 2021 Honda CR-V excelled in interior space, with 102.9 cubic feet of passenger volume and 75.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded. The CR-V offered various tailgate options, including a hands-free version on the Touring trim. Roof rails were standard only on the top trim, but the CR-V's overall design prioritized comfort and practicality, accommodating five passengers and their gear with ease.

Technology

2020 Jeep Compass

8/10

2021 Honda CR-V

9/10

The 2020 Jeep Compass featured the Uconnect infotainment system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and 4G LTE WiFi connectivity. The system was intuitive, though some features were buried in menus. Voice recognition worked well for most functions, and the system impressed for its segment.

The 2021 Honda CR-V's base LX trim had a basic 5-inch screen, while other trims offered a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims featured upgraded audio systems, with the Touring trim offering a 300-watt system with navigation. Charging ports were abundant, and the Touring trim included a wireless phone charger. The CR-V's technology package was comprehensive, especially in higher trims.

Safety

2020 Jeep Compass

6/10

2021 Honda CR-V

10/10

The 2020 Jeep Compass offered optional safety features, including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-keeping assist. However, these systems performed to average expectations. The Compass received mixed safety ratings, with Good ratings from the IIHS but varied scores from the NHTSA.

The 2021 Honda CR-V excelled in safety, earning a five-star NHTSA rating and an IIHS Top Safety Pick award. Honda Sensing, a suite of advanced safety features, was standard across all trims, except for blind spot monitoring on the base LX. This comprehensive safety package set the CR-V apart from many competitors.
