Dodge Dakota Overview

As Goldilocks would say, the Dodge Dakota is just right. Dodge introduced it as a compromise between their compact trucks, which had limited hauling capacity, but were easy to handle, and it's full-size Ram, which had the powerful towing and hauling capacity, but could feel bulky and unwieldy behind the wheel.

Enter the Dodge Dakota in 1987, which fell somewhere in between. The first pickup to feature a V8 engine, and the first to offer rack and pinion steering, the Dakota's horsepower, 4WD option, and aggressive styling suited those who used it as a workhorse, but its durability appealed to families looking for an alternative to a minivan.

Over the years, the Dakota evolved into more of a family truck without giving up any of its engine power, available in a V6 or a V8. The cab had always been roomy for front seat passengers, with controls that were easy to read and operate and storage room between and under seats. The introduction of a four-door Dakota and a lengthened cab (achieved by shortening the bed length) to seat three people comfortably in back placed it firmly in the family car realm. The heavy-duty suspension, precise handling, and unpenetrable sturdiness of the Dakota made it comfortable for transporting family, while the V8 engine and the 6.5-foot bed made it ideal for transporting cargo.

Owners love their Dakotas for the combination of look, feel, reliability, and strength. The biggest gripe is with the poor gas mileage, but really, it is a truck after all.

Customers say

The Dodge Dakota has built a strong reputation over the years for its power, reliability, and versatility, particularly with owners highlighting the robust performance of the V8 engines across various years. Many drivers appreciate the spacious interiors and towing capabilities, which make it suitable for both work and recreation. However, common complaints include concerns about gas mileage, rust issues, and some mechanical problems, particularly with older models. Despite these drawbacks, many owners still view the Dakota as a dependable choice, especially for light-duty tasks and casual driving.

Its a bit shabby but the price is right and its a very good pickup truck and V-6 are excellent and standard transmission will last longer than automatic transmission if you have experience with stick shift and clutch and I am looking for a mini truck that will fit in the garage.

Ive enjoyed the size and utility of this truck, BUT the power is weak, the tranny is lacking 1+ gears, it sucks more gas than a GM 6.0L (which generates way more power), the bearings in the rear end failed (constant whining sound) before 100K miles, and its been throwing trans temp light (in error) and engine codes randomly forever. Do not buy it. First and last Dodge Ill ever own.

The truck is in great shape. That said, it failed inspection on 5 points: * horn doesnt work * motor mounts need changed * rear bumper rusted through * parking brake out of adjustment * missing 2 bed bolts A couple of those are nits, a couple arent. Cost to repair will be over $1k, bringing the price closer to ~$4.5k, when its all said & done. Additional nits: * gas gauge doesnt work * cruise control broken (buttons broken off steering wheel) All that said, the truck is in great shape for a 30-year-old vehicle and runs pretty good. Overall happy with the purchase

Most features are minor ones, and I think the price is high for a 20+ year old vehicle. Its compatible with a Chevy S10 or Ford ranger although finding these in a 4 door is unusual.

Reviewed a 1992 Dodge LE Club Cab 4WD on May 22, 2015

This is one of the best trucks I've ever owned. It's a true classic and the newer versions don't even come close to matching it's character and ruggedness. The 5.2 Liter Magnum V8 delivers everything you'd want from a pickup truck engine. It is an absolute powerhouse, and allows for impressive acceleration compared to larger Dodge pickups. Not only does it have considerable power, but it delivers decent fuel economy and a wonderful classic V8 rumble. The transmission is the original 4 speed automatic. It's not the smoothest shifting transmission by any means, but it certainly is durable. The original transfer case can be a bit un-cooperative sometimes, but the 4 wheel drive still works great when engaged. Overall the mechanical components of the truck may experience normal wear and tear, but still function as expected, and that's whats most important. Though most of the critical parts are original and in good working order, there are components that may give you trouble. Aside from basic maintenance, we've replaced radiators, ball joints, brake lines, fuel pumps, and a rear axle. There's never an absence of inexpensive parts however, so overall repair costs should stay low, especially if you fix things yourself. The overall design of the truck is simplistic. The exterior is very square-like and lacks any impressive curves or body lines, not that you need them. The LE receives a chrome grille and chrome bumpers, as well as large chrome mirrors. You may want to steer clear of the Bright White paint if you are considering buying one of these trucks, as that paint is prone to peeling. The interior is just as minimalist looking as the exterior, but the LE features power windows, power locks, power mirrors, cruise control, and tilt steering, all of the basic convenience features that you need. All of the original electronics function as they should, and the AC still blows ice cold. The dashboard has a convenient storage tray, and slide out cup holders. The factory AM /FM stereo has a cassette player, but isn't anything special, we've long since replaced it with a newer Sony single din unit. The factory speakers do sound pretty good, but for a truly rich audio experience, you may want to replace those as well. The seats are incredibly soft and comfortable, even on long trips. Though the back seat has sparse leg room. Under the back seats you'll find some storage areas and your jack. As far as interior wear is concerned, the dashboard is prone to cracking if continuously exposed to bright sunlight, and this may cause the rear view mirror to become detached from the windshield as well. You are better off parking in the shade. The fuel gauge also only sometimes works. Besides that, and some minor scuffs, the interior is in good shape and really well put together. We've used this truck as a daily driver, but also have done some serious off-roading in it. In either case, the truck never left us stuck or stranded, and always kept on kicking. Overall, the 1992 Dodge Dakota is affordable, decent on gas, and built like a truck should be, couldn't be more satisfied with it.
