Is the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 a good car?

Yes — the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its value, smooth ride, quiet operation, good acceleration, and handling. The overview also points to a comfortable, safety-focused electric SUV with useful everyday usability, while the expert notes highlight standard advanced safety features and strong value for money.

The main trade-offs are a potentially polarizing design and an infotainment system that can feel unintuitive. That means you should like the ID.4 most if you want a mainstream EV that emphasizes comfort, safety equipment, and daily livability over interface polish.

Listings are fairly buyer-friendly, with 40.9% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 reliable?

Volkswagen’s warranty coverage includes an eight-year, 100,000-mile battery warranty, which helps reduce long-term ownership risk for used buyers, though you should still verify battery health and charging history before you buy.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Volkswagen ID.4?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 92.7% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report and confirm the car’s service records, especially if you’re comparing multiple trims or battery configurations. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on the infotainment system, driver-assistance features, charging behavior, and overall interior condition. For an EV, battery health and charging habits matter just as much as cosmetic wear.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base ID.4 Standard is the most stripped-down version, but it still feels close to the higher trims in overall quality. The higher trims add more equipment, and the Pro S Plus sits at the top of the range.
• Powertrain: You can shop single-motor rear-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive versions. The RWD setup makes 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque, while AWD raises output to 295 hp and 339 lb-ft and cuts the 0-60 mph run to 5.7 seconds.
• Safety package: Travel Assist 2.0 is standard and includes adaptive cruise control and automated lane centering. Standard equipment also includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear park distance control, automatic high beams, traffic-sign recognition, Emergency Assist 3.0, Park Assist Plus, an automated lane-change feature, and a 360-degree camera system.
• Infotainment: A 12.0-inch touchscreen is standard, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, OTA-style software updates, and the ID.Cockpit digital instrument cluster.
• Range & charging: VW estimates 209 miles of range for 62-kWh Standard and S models, and up to 275 miles for 82-kWh RWD models. DC fast charging can reach 170 kW on 82-kWh versions for a 10% to 80% charge in 30 minutes. The 62-kWh battery charges at 140 kW.
• Battery health: Ask how the battery has been charged, whether it has mostly seen home charging or frequent DC fast charging, and whether the car has any battery-related warnings or reduced-range behavior. You should also confirm how much of the battery warranty remains.

Which 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 is offered in 5 trim levels: ID.4 Standard, ID.4 S, ID.4 Pro, ID.4 Pro S, and ID.4 Pro S Plus.

Here's the short version:

• ID.4 Standard: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want the core ID.4 experience, including the standard 12.0-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone integration, and the full safety suite.
• ID.4 S: This trim adds more equipment while staying on the smaller 62-kWh battery and RWD setup, so it makes sense if you want a little more content without jumping to the pricier long-range models.
• ID.4 Pro: This is the best fit if you want the larger 82-kWh battery and the longer-range setup, especially if range matters more to you than the lowest purchase price.
• ID.4 Pro S: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it combines the longer-range battery with a richer feature set and the more upscale feel buyers tend to want in this SUV.
• ID.4 Pro S Plus: This is the top trim if you want the most equipment and are willing to pay for it, but it is the least value-oriented choice.

The safety package is strong across the lineup, with Travel Assist 2.0 and the expanded driver-assistance features standard.

• Inventory: There are 1,782 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.79% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 92.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $21,961, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4's resale value?

The current average of $22,529 sits slightly below last year's $24,699.

That price movement suggests the ID.4 has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. A softer market today can also make it easier to find a well-equipped example without paying peak pricing. If demand stays supported by the model’s strong value and safety reputation, resale should remain relatively stable for a used EV.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 safe?

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests and four-star ratings in rollover crash tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The ID.4’s standard driver-assistance suite includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear park distance control, automatic high beams, traffic-sign recognition, Travel Assist 2.0 with adaptive cruise control and automated lane centering, Emergency Assist 3.0, Park Assist Plus, an automated lane-change feature, and a 360-degree camera system.

IIHS ratings for this model year were not published, but the similar prior model earned Top Safety Pick+ recognition, which is a useful signpost for shoppers. The standard headlights were the main caveat on that earlier model, though the Pro S version improved that area.

Should I buy a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 40.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 92.7% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.79% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds a new base model, a smaller battery option, and more standard tech and driver aids.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $23,312, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $22,529 average.
• It brings a more powerful rear-drive motor and a better infotainment experience.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2023 is the smarter buy because it combines lower pricing, strong owner satisfaction, and a healthy supply of accident-free listings. If you’re willing to spend more for a more polished driving and tech experience, the 2024 is the better upgrade path.
