CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Toyota Tacoma
overall

Summary
With 6,787 currently listed for sale and an average price of $33,592.00, 31.8% of 2022 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota Tacoma 4.36 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a small pickup that still draws buyers despite showing its age. It offers modern tech and safety features, but its biggest appeal remains its big off-road ability. That combination makes it especially attractive to shoppers who want a smaller alternative to a full-size pickup and still plan to use it for camping trips, kayaking outings, mountain biking, or weekend projects.
It also has a few practical strengths that help explain its staying power. The Tacoma offers easy-to-use technology and a manual transmission, and its bed is useful for hauling supplies. At the same time, it is not without compromises: the base engine is underwhelming, the back seat is cramped, and the ride quality is poor.

It has every feature I was looking for except BSM. Definitely a good value compared to others with the same opinions and miles. There really isnt any other models out there to compare it too. It is an awesome truck.

We have owned it 4 days. The Tacoma has great reviews and is very reliable. The V6 engine has enough power and still gets decent gas mileage.

Reviewed a 2022 Toyota SR5 V6 Double Cab 4WD on Feb 7, 2023
For years, all I wanted was a Toyota Tacoma, but the price tag always scared me off. Finally, I had the opportunity to purchase a brand new 2022 Taco, at a lower price than a used one (crazy times). While I loved the idea of owning vehicle, and of course, the looks, usability seemed to have been lacking. For the price, the Tacoma seems to lack in features that their competitors have (Colorado, Canyon, 1500, etc), and the seating is quite cramped. Anyone sitting in the backseat, with the exception of my 5 year old daughter was uncomfortable. In addition, the finish details lacked in quality (plastics), again, for the price. No doubt that the Tacoma has built an exceptional reputation based on reliability, but I feel like the competitors are starting the unseat the mid-sized stalwart. After 4k miles, I sold the truck and went in a different direction. All said, damn that truck looked good!

Drivers describe it as reliable, durable, and a truck they can count on over time. The expert evaluation also calls it supremely trusty and durable, which lines up with the owner feedback.
Toyota’s maintenance-friendly reputation is reinforced by the Tacoma’s straightforward, familiar design and its emphasis on long-term toughness.
For used buyers, the main ownership risk is that a neglected example can feel rougher and less refined than newer competitors, so condition matters a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Tacoma?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
Start with a history report so you can confirm accident status, title history, and prior use. Then prioritize a thorough inspection of the suspension, steering feel, brakes, and cabin wear, since this truck’s rugged personality can hide hard use. Pay close attention to how the truck drives at low speeds and on the highway, because condition can affect refinement more than mileage alone.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR is the most basic version, with 16-inch steel wheels, a manually sliding rear window, air conditioning, manual seats, and a 7-inch touchscreen. It also lacks the larger screen and added convenience features found higher up the range.
- Powertrain: The base 2.7-liter four-cylinder makes 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, but it is underpowered and does not deliver a meaningful fuel-economy advantage. The optional 3.5-liter V6 makes 278 hp and 265 lb-ft and is the better choice for most shoppers.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are optional.
- Infotainment: The base truck gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while every trim above it uses an 8-inch screen. The system supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa, and it is described as easy to use.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.7-liter four-cylinder with rear-wheel drive returns 20 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. The V6 with rear-wheel drive returns 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. With 4WD, the four-cylinder returns 19 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined, while the V6 returns 18 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined. The V6 with manual transmission and 4WD returns 17 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR is the value entry point, but it lacks the larger 8-inch screen and the extra comfort and convenience features found higher up the lineup.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SR5 adds fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an 8-inch touchscreen, making it the best balance of price and everyday livability.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited adds leather upholstery, a JBL premium audio system, navigation, heated front seats, and a power moonroof for the most comfort-focused setup.
- Off-road trim: The TRD Off-Road is the best pick if you want trail hardware, including all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select, and Crawl Control.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, while blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors remain optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Tacoma?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough price softness to create opportunities.
- Deal availability: 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 6,760 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.97% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $32,102.64, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $33,592 sits slightly below last year's $34,981.
That price movement suggests the Tacoma has softened a bit, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, that also means your upside depends heavily on buying well and keeping the truck in strong condition.
Because demand remains supported by the Tacoma’s reputation and broad appeal, well-kept examples should continue to attract buyers. If you choose carefully now, you can still position yourself for solid resale later.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.36/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The 2022 Tacoma earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in side crash tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are optional.
The backup camera is standard, but the image is described as very grainy, so you should pay extra attention when backing up.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.97% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.36/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It blends strong off-road ability with easy-to-use tech and standard safety features.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $32,531, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $33,592 average.
- It adds special editions and standard dual-zone climate control on V6 models.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $36,962, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $33,592 average.
- It keeps the Tacoma’s rugged appeal while leaning harder into reliability and resale strength.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and proven Tacoma strengths, the 2022 is the primary path to consider. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2021 can save you money while keeping much of the same core appeal.
