Summary

Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Sienna stands out as a hybrid minivan in its second model year after a redesign for 2021. Toyota keeps last year’s standard hybrid powertrain unchanged, and the result is a family hauler that emphasizes fuel efficiency while still offering plenty of cargo space. It also carries great safety ratings, which adds to its appeal for buyers who want practicality with reassurance.
A new Woodland trim level is available for 2022, giving the Sienna a more adventurous look for families who want something a little different. The main tradeoff is price: it is priced higher than competitors, so shoppers may need to weigh its efficiency, space, and safety strengths against that added cost.

After doing some research, we decided that a Honda or Toyota mini-van would be the best option for our expanding family. We ultimately went with the Toyota Sienna due to it being a hybrid, captain seats in the middle row, full trunk that will actually fit stuff, and the drive ability.

Hybrid Sienna is great value. Compare to more expensive Hybrid Pacifica. Other brands should come online next year. Supply of Sienna Hybrid is very low. Not taking new orders. Probably will be well into 2023 model year before supply returns.

Great fuel economy for this size vehicle. Little expensive, but will save on gas during ownership. Needs a little more power hp, but would be buying for the great gas mileage. Compare this Sienna to a Chrysler Pacifica hybrid, which is also expensive.

There are 1,424 listings available, which gives you a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2022 Toyota Sienna a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Toyota Sienna earns a 4.75/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, Technology, and Safety.
It stands out as a hybrid minivan that emphasizes fuel efficiency while still offering plenty of cargo space, and it also brings strong safety credentials. The tradeoff is that it is priced higher than competitors, so you are paying for efficiency, space, and reassurance rather than bargain pricing.
The main compromises are its higher price versus rivals and the fact that the new Woodland trim is aimed more at style than a major capability shift.
Good and great deals account for 34.6% of listings, so you can still find some market-friendly opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Toyota Sienna reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2022 Sienna carries over Toyota’s hybrid setup unchanged, which supports the sense of continuity buyers often want in a family vehicle. It also benefits from Toyota’s emphasis on efficiency and durability, with the hybrid battery pack backed by an eight-year/100,000-mile hybrid-related component warranty.
The hybrid powertrain uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors, and the setup is described as smooth and efficient. Toyota also notes a 10-year/150,000-mile warranty for the hybrid battery pack, which adds confidence for long-term ownership.
For used buyers, the biggest ownership risk is paying extra for a vehicle that has been used hard as a family hauler, so condition and maintenance history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Sienna?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a documented record. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on wear from family use, especially interior condition, seat operation, and signs of heavy cargo or child-seat use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base LE models start with 17-inch wheels, while upper trims move to 18-inch or 20-inch wheels and add more upscale equipment. The base trim also misses some of the convenience and comfort upgrades found higher up the range.
- Powertrain: The Sienna uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors for 243 horsepower. FWD is standard, AWD is available, and the hybrid setup is tuned for smooth, efficient driving.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, Lane Tracing Assist, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and traffic sign recognition. Toyota’s Star Safety System is also standard.
- Infotainment: A 9-inch touchscreen is standard, along with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, SiriusXM, one USB media port, and six USB charging ports. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not included.
- Fuel efficiency: FWD models are rated at 36 mpg city/36 mpg highway/36 mpg combined, while AWD models are rated at 35 mpg city/36 mpg highway/35 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Sienna is offered in 6 trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, Platinum, Woodland Edition.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the hybrid Sienna experience at the lowest starting price. It makes the most sense if you want the core efficiency, space, and safety package without paying for extra comfort or tech.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more convenience and family-friendly features while staying below the higher-priced luxury-oriented models. It also opens the door to more available equipment and seating flexibility.
- XSE: This trim adds a sportier look and sits above the XLE in price, so it suits you if style matters more than pure value.
- Woodland Edition: This trim is the one to consider if you want the more adventurous appearance and AWD-only setup. It is aimed at families who want something a little different.
- Limited: This trim brings more upscale tech and comfort features, including higher-end audio and available premium conveniences, so it fits you if you want a more luxurious minivan.
- Platinum: This is the top-end choice, with the most advanced available equipment and the most premium presentation.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core driver-assistance suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Sienna?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you have room to shop, but the best listings still deserve quick attention.
- Deal availability: 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,424 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.10% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $36,529, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $37,066 sits slightly below last year's $39,473.
That softer pricing suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more selectively now. For a future seller, the current trend means you should expect some depreciation pressure in the near term rather than a rising-price environment.
Even so, the Sienna’s combination of efficiency, space, and strong safety appeal should help it stay attractive to used buyers. Well-kept examples with clean history and desirable equipment should remain easier to move than less cared-for ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Sienna safe?
The 2022 Toyota Sienna was a five-star vehicle according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the nearly identical 2021 model received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, Lane Tracing Assist, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and traffic sign recognition. Toyota’s Star Safety System is also standard, adding stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and electronic brake-force distribution.
The Sienna also includes 10 airbags, multiple LATCH child-seat connectors, and a rear-seat reminder system. A caveat to keep in mind is that the IIHS result cited here is based on the prior model year’s nearly identical vehicle rather than a fresh 2022 test result.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.10% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds the new Woodland trim for families wanting a more adventurous look.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $34,958, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $37,066 average.
- It introduced the redesigned hybrid Sienna with a standard hybrid powertrain.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $41,904, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $37,066 average.
- It keeps the standard hybrid formula and family-focused practicality.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of current-year availability, strong safety, and hybrid efficiency, the 2022 is the primary target. If price matters most, the 2021 can save you money while delivering much of the same core package.
