Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Sienna stands out as a hybrid minivan in its second model year after a redesign for 2021. Toyota keeps last year’s standard hybrid powertrain unchanged, and the result is a family hauler that emphasizes fuel efficiency while still offering plenty of cargo space. It also carries great safety ratings, which adds to its appeal for buyers who want practicality with reassurance.
A new Woodland trim level is available for 2022, giving the Sienna a more adventurous look for families who want something a little different. The main tradeoff is price: it is priced higher than competitors, so shoppers may need to weigh its efficiency, space, and safety strengths against that added cost.

After doing some research, we decided that a Honda or Toyota mini-van would be the best option for our expanding family. We ultimately went with the Toyota Sienna due to it being a hybrid, captain seats in the middle row, full trunk that will actually fit stuff, and the drive ability.

Hybrid Sienna is great value. Compare to more expensive Hybrid Pacifica. Other brands should come online next year. Supply of Sienna Hybrid is very low. Not taking new orders. Probably will be well into 2023 model year before supply returns.

Great fuel economy for this size vehicle. Little expensive, but will save on gas during ownership. Needs a little more power hp, but would be buying for the great gas mileage. Compare this Sienna to a Chrysler Pacifica hybrid, which is also expensive.

Yes — the 2022 Toyota Sienna earns a 4.75/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, Technology, and Safety.
It stands out as a hybrid minivan in its second model year after a redesign, with a standard hybrid powertrain, strong fuel-efficiency focus, and plenty of cargo space. It also brings great safety ratings, which makes it especially appealing if you want practicality with reassurance.
The main tradeoff is that it is priced higher than competitors, so you are paying a premium for its efficiency, space, and safety strengths. The expert test drive data also notes that the Sienna is not for everyone, which is a reminder that its family-first mission matters more than broad appeal.
34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Toyota Sienna reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2022 Sienna’s reliability case is built around its hybrid setup, its family-hauler mission, and its emphasis on efficiency and comfort. The expert test drive data also points to a standard hybrid powertrain that returns unchanged from the prior year, which supports the idea of a proven formula rather than a risky redesign.
Its performance notes highlight a powertrain that combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors, plus an electronically controlled CVT designed to deliver power smoothly and efficiently. Toyota also backs the hybrid-related components with an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is paying more upfront than you might for a non-hybrid rival, so condition and maintenance history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Sienna?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are shopping outside the cleanest listings. Focus on overall condition, equipment completeness, and whether the vehicle matches the trim and seating setup you want.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LE is the most affordable entry point, but it is also where you are most likely to notice feature gaps compared with higher trims. Upper trims add more comfort and convenience equipment, and the Woodland Edition brings a more adventurous look for families who want something different.
- Powertrain: The Sienna uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors for 243 horsepower. FWD is standard, AWD is available on all trim levels, and the CVT is tuned for smooth, efficient operation.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, Lane Tracing Assist, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and traffic sign recognition. Toyota’s Star Safety System is also standard.
- Infotainment: A 9-inch touchscreen is standard, along with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, SiriusXM, one USB media port, and six USB charging ports. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not included.
- Fuel efficiency: FWD models are rated at 36 mpg city/36 mpg highway/36 mpg combined, while AWD models are rated at 35 mpg city/36 mpg highway/35 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Sienna is offered in 6 trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, Platinum, Woodland Edition.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the value-focused starting point if you want the Sienna’s hybrid efficiency and standard safety tech at the lowest price. It is the trim to consider if you care most about getting into the model without paying for extras you may not need.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more comfort and convenience while staying below the higher-priced luxury-oriented trims. It is a smart middle ground if you want a more complete family vehicle without jumping too far in price.
- XSE: This trim adds a sportier personality and sits above the XLE in the lineup. It makes sense if you want a more distinctive look and a richer feature set than the lower trims.
- Limited: This is the upscale choice if you want more premium equipment and a more polished feel. It suits you if comfort and convenience matter more than keeping the purchase price down.
- Woodland Edition: This is the trim to choose if you want the adventurous look and AWD-only setup. It is the most specialized option in the lineup for families who want something a little different.
- Platinum: This is the top-end choice if you want the most features and the most upscale presentation. It is the trim for shoppers who want the fullest Sienna experience.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up trims to get the core driver-assistance suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Sienna?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on strong listings.
- Deal availability: 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,407 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.97% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $36,529, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $37,207 sits slightly below last year's $39,569.
That price movement suggests the Sienna has softened enough to give used buyers a better entry point than a year ago. For a future seller, that means your resale outcome will depend heavily on how well you preserve condition and how competitively you price the vehicle when it is time to sell.
Because the model still has strong demand drivers — especially efficiency, space, and safety — it should remain appealing to family shoppers. But the current trend also shows that you should not expect appreciation; instead, you should plan for steady value retention rather than a quick rebound.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Sienna safe?
The 2022 Toyota Sienna was a five-star vehicle according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the nearly identical 2021 model received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, Lane Tracing Assist lane centering, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and traffic sign recognition. Toyota’s Star Safety System is also standard, adding stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and electronic brake-force distribution.
The Sienna also includes 10 airbags, multiple LATCH child-seat connectors, a rear-seat reminder system, and tire-pressure monitoring. That combination makes it especially well suited to family use.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.97% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 adds a new Woodland trim level for adventurous families.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $34,937, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $37,207 average.
- It introduced the redesigned hybrid Sienna with a strong focus on efficiency and modernization.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $42,086, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $37,207 average.
- It keeps the hybrid formula and family-friendly practicality while emphasizing efficiency and safety.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, efficiency, and safety, the 2022 is the sweet spot to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2021 can save you money while still delivering the core hybrid Sienna experience.
