Summary

Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota Sienna 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Sienna stands out as a hybrid minivan that carries over Toyota’s redesigned formula into its second model year. Its standard hybrid powertrain returns unchanged, giving it a fuel-efficient character that helps define the vehicle’s appeal. For buyers who want a family hauler with a more adventurous look, a new Woodland trim level is available.
Beyond its efficiency, the 2022 Toyota Sienna is also notable for its practicality. It offers plenty of cargo space and earns great safety ratings, both of which matter in a minivan aimed at families. The main drawback is price: it is priced higher than competitors, so shoppers may need to weigh its strengths against that premium.

After doing some research, we decided that a Honda or Toyota mini-van would be the best option for our expanding family. We ultimately went with the Toyota Sienna due to it being a hybrid, captain seats in the middle row, full trunk that will actually fit stuff, and the drive ability.

Hybrid Sienna is great value. Compare to more expensive Hybrid Pacifica. Other brands should come online next year. Supply of Sienna Hybrid is very low. Not taking new orders. Probably will be well into 2023 model year before supply returns.

Great fuel economy for this size vehicle. Little expensive, but will save on gas during ownership. Needs a little more power hp, but would be buying for the great gas mileage. Compare this Sienna to a Chrysler Pacifica hybrid, which is also expensive.

Is the 2022 Toyota Sienna a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Toyota Sienna earns a 4.75/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, Technology, and Safety.
The overview points to a hybrid minivan that keeps Toyota’s redesigned formula intact for its second model year, with a standard hybrid powertrain and a new Woodland trim level for buyers who want a more adventurous look. It also emphasizes strong practicality, including plenty of cargo space and great safety ratings.
The main trade-off is cost: the Sienna is priced higher than competitors, so you’re paying a premium for its efficiency and family-friendly packaging. The expert review also notes that the Sienna’s appeal is strongest if you value comfort, utility, and fuel efficiency over flash.
With 29.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Toyota Sienna reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview and expert review both frame the Sienna as a practical, efficiency-focused minivan with a standard hybrid setup that carries over unchanged for 2022. That consistency matters if you want a used family hauler that isn’t chasing novelty at the expense of proven hardware.
The performance notes also point to a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid system with two electric motors, an electronically controlled CVT, and a battery pack backed by a 10-year/150,000-mile warranty. Toyota also says the hybrid-related component coverage runs for eight years or 100,000 miles, which adds confidence for used buyers.
If you’re shopping used, the biggest long-term ownership risk is paying a premium for a vehicle that may already be priced above similarly sized alternatives.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Sienna?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
Start with a history report so you can confirm accident status, title status, and service records before you get too far into the process. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing higher-mileage examples or vehicles with optional equipment. Focus on overall condition, since this model’s value proposition depends heavily on whether it still feels like a well-kept family hauler.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base models get the essentials, but upper trims add larger wheels, more upscale cabin touches, and more convenience equipment. The Woodland trim is the one to watch if you want the more adventurous look and AWD-only setup.
- Powertrain: You’re shopping a standard hybrid with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors, plus available AWD on every trim level. The setup is tuned for efficiency, with EPA estimates of 36 mpg city/36 mpg highway/36 mpg combined for FWD models and 35 mpg city/36 mpg highway/35 mpg combined for AWD models.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, Lane Tracing Assist, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and traffic sign recognition. Toyota’s Star Safety System is also standard.
- Infotainment: Every trim gets a 9-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, SiriusXM, one USB media port, and six USB charging ports. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not included.
- Fuel efficiency: FWD models are rated at 36 mpg city/36 mpg highway/36 mpg combined, while AWD models are rated at 35 mpg city/36 mpg highway/35 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Sienna is offered in 6 trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, Platinum, and Woodland Edition.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core hybrid Sienna experience at the lowest price. It’s the trim to choose if you want the most affordable path into the lineup and don’t need the extra comfort and convenience features found higher up.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a more upscale feature mix without jumping all the way to the pricier upper trims. It’s a smart middle ground if you want more family-friendly convenience and available equipment.
- XSE: This trim is the one to consider if you want a sportier appearance and a more distinctive feel without moving into luxury pricing. It sits above the XLE and adds a more expressive personality.
- Limited: This is the trim to buy if you want a more premium Sienna with more comfort and tech content. It’s aimed at shoppers who want the minivan to feel more upscale.
- Woodland Edition: This is the trim for buyers who want the adventurous look and AWD-only setup. It’s the most specialized choice in the lineup.
- Platinum: This is the top-end choice if you want the most equipment and the most upscale presentation in the range.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 and Star Safety System are standard across the lineup, so you’re not forced into a higher trim just to get the core safety suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Sienna?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,306 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.36% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 80.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $36,532.50, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $37,483 sits slightly below last year's $39,604.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may temper near-term resale upside if you buy at the wrong price. If you plan to sell later, your best protection is to buy well, keep mileage reasonable, and choose a clean-history example.
The Sienna’s strong efficiency and family-focused practicality should help it stay appealing to used shoppers who want a hybrid minivan. A well-kept example with a good equipment mix should be easier to move than one that feels overpriced or neglected.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Sienna safe?
The 2022 Sienna was a five-star vehicle according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the nearly identical 2021 model received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, Lane Tracing Assist, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and traffic sign recognition. Toyota’s Star Safety System is also standard, adding stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and electronic brake-force distribution.
The main caveat is that the IIHS result cited here is based on the prior model year’s nearly identical vehicle, so you should still verify the exact crash-test record for the specific used example you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.36% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 adds the Woodland trim and keeps the standard hybrid setup that defines the redesigned Sienna.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $35,031, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $37,483 average.
- It introduced the redesigned hybrid Sienna and emphasizes efficiency and comfort.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $42,451, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $37,483 average.
- It keeps the hybrid formula and adds family-friendly safety and space.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and the updated Sienna formula, the 2022 is the primary year to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2021 can save you money while delivering much of the same core appeal.
