CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
overall

Summary
With 1,050 currently listed for sale and an average price of $36,150.00, 34.5% of 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrids for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6 / 10.
82.5% of 2022 Highlander Hybrid models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid stands out most for efficiency and value rather than flash. Toyota’s own test-drive summary says it makes up for a lack of excitement with a surplus of efficiency, and its best selling points are excellent fuel economy and accessible pricing. That combination gives it a clear appeal for buyers who want a three-row SUV that focuses on practicality and running costs instead of performance or luxury.
At the same time, the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is described as neither particularly attractive, sporty, nor luxurious, and its performance and refinement are said to be middling compared with the best three-row SUVs. The cabin also has some drawbacks, including interior materials that feel cheap. Even so, it remains comfortable, fuel-efficient, and a strong value for money, which helps explain why it can still be compelling despite its more ordinary character.

I had a 2012 Highlander Hybrid XLE….loved it!! Toyota and Lexus Hybrid models until a return to the re-design of this year’s beauty. I got the Highlander Hybrid Platinum. Great ride, fantastic gas mileage. Top quality interior, nothing cheap about the quality.

Comfortable, good responsive feel on the road, feature rich, great gas mileage. Moderate storage capacity for its size in comparison to a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Not a good choice for towing above 2500 lbs.

Is the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid a good car?
Yes — it earns a 4.75/5 user rating and a 6/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 8/10.
The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is built around efficiency and value rather than flash, and that lines up with its appeal as a practical three-row SUV. It is described as comfortable, fuel-efficient, and a strong value for money, even though it is not especially sporty or luxurious.
The main trade-offs are fairly pedestrian performance and interior materials that feel cheap. For you, that means the Highlander Hybrid makes the most sense if you want a family-focused SUV that prioritizes running costs and everyday usefulness over excitement.
The market shows 34.5% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2022 Highlander Hybrid is presented as a practical, family-oriented SUV with a comfort-first ride and a hybrid system built for efficiency. Its performance is described as adequate rather than exciting, but the powertrain is tuned to deliver smooth everyday use and quiet cruising when you are not asking much of it.
The hybrid setup also helps reduce fuel costs, which can make ownership feel easier over time. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright mechanical drama and more about whether the vehicle has been maintained well enough to preserve its efficiency and overall condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper vehicle-by-vehicle review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the hybrid system, braking feel, cabin wear, and any signs that the vehicle has been used heavily as a family hauler. Pay close attention to interior condition, since the cabin materials are described as less upscale than some rivals.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LE trim starts the lineup, while the XLE is described as the sweet spot for budget-minded shoppers. Higher trims add more upscale touches, and the Limited and Platinum trims are the ones to consider if you want genuine leather.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine with 243 horsepower, a CVT, and standard FWD. AWD is available through an added rear electric motor, and the hybrid setup is tuned more for efficiency than excitement.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor, traffic-sign recognition, and automatic high beams. A surround-view camera system and adaptive headlights are reserved for the top Platinum trim.
- Infotainment: An 8-inch touchscreen is standard, while a 12.3-inch screen is available only on the top two trims. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa are standard, and wireless charging starts with XLE trims and above.
- Fuel efficiency: The FWD hybrid is estimated at 36 mpg combined, and Toyota says the hybrid can pay back its price premium in less than nine months under its assumptions.
Which 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, XLE, Limited, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the Highlander Hybrid’s core efficiency and family utility at the lowest starting price.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim. It is called out as the sweet spot for budget shoppers, and it adds enough comfort and convenience to make the lineup feel more complete.
- Limited: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel, since it adds genuine leather and other niceties that better match a more generous budget.
- Platinum: This is the top choice if you want the most equipment, including the features that are reserved for the upper end of the lineup.
A surround-view camera system and adaptive headlights are only offered in the top Platinum trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,062 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.77% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 82.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $34,840.48, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid's resale value?
The current average of $36,177 sits slightly below last year's $37,989.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. Even so, the Highlander Hybrid’s efficiency-focused appeal and family-friendly positioning should help it remain attractive to used buyers. If you keep mileage, condition, and maintenance in check, you should be able to preserve value better than with a less practical SUV.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid safe?
It earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for frontal collision and rollover protection. The IIHS named the standard Highlander a Top Safety Pick+.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor, traffic-sign recognition, and automatic high beams. A surround-view camera system and adaptive headlights are only available on the top Platinum trim.
The safety systems generally work as advertised, but the adaptive cruise control can wait too long to slow and the lane-keep assist can feel overly resistant. The lane-departure warning can also be prone to false alarms, so you should test those systems carefully on a used example.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.77% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It emphasizes efficiency and value over flash.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $33,759, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $36,177 average.
- It offers practical three-row utility with strong efficiency.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $39,061, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $36,177 average.
- It adds quiet-cabin family appeal and standard advanced safety features.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2022 if you want the best balance of price, efficiency, and available inventory. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 is the better value play. If you want to spend more for a newer-year alternative, the 2023 is the natural step up, but it asks for a higher purchase price.
