CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
overall

Summary
With 1,064 currently listed for sale and an average price of $36,161.00, 33.4% of 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrids for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6 / 10.
83.5% of 2022 Highlander Hybrid models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid stands out most for efficiency and value rather than flash. Toyota’s own test-drive summary says it makes up for a lack of excitement with a surplus of efficiency, and its best selling points are excellent fuel economy and accessible pricing. That combination gives it a clear appeal for buyers who want a three-row SUV that focuses on practicality and running costs instead of performance or luxury.
At the same time, the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is described as neither particularly attractive, sporty, nor luxurious, and its performance and refinement are said to be middling compared with the best three-row SUVs. The cabin also has some drawbacks, including interior materials that feel cheap. Even so, it remains comfortable, fuel-efficient, and a strong value for money, which helps explain why it can still be compelling despite its more ordinary character.

I had a 2012 Highlander Hybrid XLE….loved it!! Toyota and Lexus Hybrid models until a return to the re-design of this year’s beauty. I got the Highlander Hybrid Platinum. Great ride, fantastic gas mileage. Top quality interior, nothing cheap about the quality.

Comfortable, good responsive feel on the road, feature rich, great gas mileage. Moderate storage capacity for its size in comparison to a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Not a good choice for towing above 2500 lbs.

Is the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is presented as a practical, family-focused SUV with strong efficiency and a reputation for doing the basics well. Toyota’s own test-drive notes also point to a quiet cabin and comfortable ride, both of which support day-to-day dependability.
Its hybrid powertrain is described as smooth in normal use, with the electric motors helping the vehicle get moving cleanly before the gasoline engine takes over. The cost-effectiveness notes also reinforce the ownership case by highlighting how quickly the hybrid premium can be recovered through fuel savings.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright mechanical drama and more about whether the vehicle has been maintained and worn in line with its mileage.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a vehicle history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the hybrid system, brakes, tires, and suspension, since those are the areas most likely to reveal how the SUV was used. Focus on cabin condition too, because the interior materials are described as less convincing than the rest of the package.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LE trim starts the lineup, but it lacks the nicer touches found higher up. The interior materials are a weak point overall, and the top trims are where you get the more upscale feel.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid setup with 243 horsepower, a CVT, and standard FWD. AWD is available, and the hybrid setup is tuned more for efficiency than excitement.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense features adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, traffic-sign recognition, and automatic high beams. A surround-view camera system and adaptive headlights are reserved for the top Platinum trim.
- Infotainment: An 8-inch touchscreen is standard, while a 12.3-inch screen is available only on the top two trims. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa are standard, and wireless charging starts on XLE trims and above.
- Fuel efficiency: The FWD hybrid is estimated at 36 mpg combined, and Toyota says the hybrid can pay back its price premium in less than nine months under its assumptions.
Which 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, XLE, Limited, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The LE gets you into the hybrid lineup, but it misses the more upscale touches and the top-end safety and convenience upgrades.
- Sweet-spot trim: The XLE is the best value pick because it adds useful equipment without pushing you into luxury pricing.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the best choice if you want genuine leather and a more upscale cabin.
- Premium/top trim: The Platinum adds the most advanced convenience and safety equipment, including the surround-view camera system and adaptive headlights.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, but the surround-view camera system and adaptive headlights are only offered on the top Platinum trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,083 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.58% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 83.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $34,860.20, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid's resale value?
The current average of $36,083 sits slightly below last year's $38,214.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper future resale gains if you sell soon. If you buy at a favorable price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you should be better positioned than someone who pays near the top of the range. The model’s efficiency and practical appeal should continue to support demand among used shoppers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid safe?
It earns an overall five-star rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for frontal collision and rollover protection. The IIHS named the standard Highlander a Top Safety Pick+.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, traffic-sign recognition, and automatic high beams. A surround-view camera system and adaptive headlights are only offered on the top Platinum trim.
The expert notes also point out some tuning issues: adaptive cruise control can brake late, lane-keep assist can feel overly forceful, and lane-departure warnings can be prone to false alarms.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.58% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It emphasizes efficiency and value over flash.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $34,218, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $36,083 average.
- It adds a more updated safety suite and improved headlights.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $39,393, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $36,083 average.
- It brings a quiet cabin and standard advanced safety features.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, efficiency, and available inventory, the 2022 is the strongest all-around pick. If your priority is spending less, the 2021 is worth a look; if you want to compare against a newer model and can pay more, the 2023 is the next step up.
