For used buyers, the main risk is less about core durability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by family-duty mileage.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Highlander?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on every candidate and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the vehicle has higher mileage or visible wear. Focus on cabin condition, seat comfort, and how well the third row and cargo area have held up, since this model is often used as a family hauler. It also makes sense to check that the technology and safety systems work as expected, because those are key parts of the Highlander’s appeal.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup starts with the L trim, which includes an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, three-zone climate control, and an eight-way power driver’s seat. The LE adds LED fog lights, a smart key system, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and a power liftgate. The XLE adds synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, a power moonroof, wireless device charging, second-row captain’s chairs, second-row sunshades, and a 7-inch digital screen. The XSE adds unique exterior styling, 20-inch alloy wheels, a large mesh grille, dual exhaust tips, and a sport-tuned suspension. The Limited and Platinum bring the most upscale equipment, with features such as genuine leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree parking camera, and a larger 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen.
• Powertrain: The Highlander uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available. The engine is strongest once the vehicle is already moving, with better pickup at cruising and highway speeds than from a standstill.
• Safety package: The Highlander comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense, which includes forward collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, traffic-sign recognition, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on all but the base L trim. Upper trims can add front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view parking monitor, a head-up display, and adaptive headlights.
• Infotainment: The standard setup is an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and a WiFi hotspot. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not included. A larger 12.3-inch touchscreen is available, along with a digital instrument panel and an 11-speaker JBL premium stereo.
• Fuel efficiency: The most efficient configurations are the FWD L and FWD XLE, which return 21 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. The AWD L, LE, and XLE return 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined.

Which 2022 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?

The 2022 Toyota Highlander is offered in 6 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, and Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the value-focused starting point, and it already gives you the core Highlander formula: a V6 engine, an 8-inch touchscreen, three-zone climate control, and standard safety tech. If you want the lowest entry price and can live without luxury extras, this is the trim to start with.
• LE: This trim adds useful everyday upgrades like a power liftgate, a smart key system, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. It’s a sensible step up if you want convenience without moving too far up the price ladder.
• XLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a strong mix of comfort and tech, including heated front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, wireless device charging, second-row captain’s chairs, and a moonroof. If you want the most balanced family setup, this is the one to focus on.
• XSE: This trim leans into style and a sportier feel with unique exterior design, 20-inch wheels, dual exhaust tips, and a sport-tuned suspension. It suits you best if you want the Highlander to feel a little more distinctive on the road.
• Limited: This is the upscale comfort choice, with genuine leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, acoustic noise-reducing windows, a hands-free power liftgate, and standard JBL audio. It’s the right pick if you want a more premium cabin.
• Platinum: This is the top trim, adding the most advanced convenience and luxury features, including adaptive headlights, a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree parking camera, heated second-row seats, a rearview camera mirror, and the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen.

All but the base L trim include blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, so that’s an important safety-package step up to keep in mind.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Highlander?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 4,649 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.03% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 80.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $32,083, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Toyota Highlander's resale value?

The current average of $32,083 sits slightly below last year's $34,509.

That price movement suggests the Highlander has softened enough to create a better buying opportunity now, but it also means future sellers may not see the same pricing strength they did a year ago. Even so, the model’s broad family appeal and strong owner satisfaction help support demand in the used market. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in good condition, you should still have a solid path to resale later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Toyota Highlander safe?

The 2022 Toyota Highlander earns Good ratings from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense, which includes forward collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, traffic-sign recognition, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on all but the base L trim, so that’s an important trim-level gap to note. Upper trims can add front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view parking monitor, a head-up display, and adaptive headlights. The expert review also notes that the lane-departure and lane-keeping systems can feel very active, which may be something you notice in everyday driving.

Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.03% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It keeps the V6 powertrain, standard safety tech, and family-focused packaging that make this year appealing.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $29,496, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $32,083 average.
• It leans heavily on comfort, space, and safety.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package, the 2022 is the better primary choice because it combines solid pricing, strong owner satisfaction, and a well-rounded feature set. If your main goal is to spend less, the 2021 is the better budget path, especially if you can find one in good condition.
