91.6% of 2022 S-Class models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a full-size four-door luxury sedan that aims to define modern executive transportation. Its appeal starts with a 48-volt mild hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain and continues with the kind of upscale execution buyers expect from the S-Class name, including premium interior materials and a stylish design. It is also positioned as a serious luxury flagship rather than a compromise, which helps explain why it remains such a recognizable choice in the segment.
Mechanically, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class offers a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder gas engine in the S500 or a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 in the S580, both paired with EQ Boost, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. The EPA estimates for the S500 reach up to 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined, while the S580 is rated at 16 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined. Buyers also get a great ride quality, but the design may be polarizing and the high price tag is hard to ignore, with the S500 starting at $111,100 and the S580 starting at $117,700.

The S Class provides safety and comfort for its riders. At first, I decided to purchase the BMW 745e after comparing it with the Audi A8. I decided to give the Mercedes S class a try. After the test drive, I immediately decided to purchase the Mercedes S580. I do not regret my purchase at all. All of the looks of the car look fabulous. The ambient lighting is breathtaking as well as the display screen. The panoramic sunroof is also one of my favorites. I live in a hilly area, but I can’t even tell when going up the hill since the S580 is a powerful vehicle.

It’s been a pinnacle of luxury, however nothing stands out compared to previous models except some businesses including indoor lighting etc. the screen seems odd ;stands out in the middle and does not merge with the rest of the dashboard

The only option I wish it had was the premier stereo system. Otherwise the car was perfect. It was basically a new vehicle. The price I actually paid was great based on the immaculate condition and very low mileage.

This car has a manufacturer recall on its fuel pump mechanism, and it is a hybrid car, so for someone who leaves the car parked in the garage for 2 straight weeks, it may cause the battery to die and may not be suited for my needs/lifestyle

How much does the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $63,231 |
| Year-Round Low | $63,227.35 |
| Year-Round High | $71,396.57 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $71,386 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.42% |
Prices have softened 11.42% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 1,103 listings available, you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare across trims and conditions.
If you find a listing below $63,227.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, Technology, and Safety.
It stands out as a full-size four-door luxury sedan built around premium interior materials, a stylish design, and a serious flagship presence. The cabin execution is a major strength, and the ride quality is a clear plus for you if you want a calm, upscale daily driver.
The trade-offs are straightforward: the design may be polarizing, and the price tag is high. If you want a luxury sedan that emphasizes refinement, technology, and executive-level comfort, this one fits that brief well.
Only 25.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market rewards patience and careful comparison.
Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2022 S-Class is built around a 48-volt mild hybrid gasoline-electric setup, and the powertrain is described as seamless and responsive. The electric assist adds power smoothly during acceleration, which supports the sense of refinement you want in a flagship sedan.
Mercedes also frames the car as a highly developed executive model with advanced systems and careful execution. That matters for used buyers because a well-engineered luxury sedan can feel solid and composed over time when it has been maintained properly.
If you buy used, your biggest long-term risk is the cost of keeping a highly complex luxury flagship in top condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace documentation. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on electronics, ride quality, and any signs of deferred maintenance. On a car like this, condition matters as much as mileage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S500 and S580 both emphasize premium materials and a high-end cabin, but the base setup already brings a strong luxury experience. You should compare equipment carefully because the higher trims and packages add more executive-level content.
- Powertrain: The S500 uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with EQ Boost, while the S580 uses a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with the same mild-hybrid assist. Both pair with a nine-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive, and both are tuned for smooth, quick performance.
- Safety package: The standard suite includes active distance assist Distronic, active stop-and-go assist, active steering assist, active emergency stop assist, active lane-change assistant, active brake assist, active speed limit assist, active blind-spot assist, active lane-keeping assist, active parking assist with Parktronic, Pre-Safe Plus with Pre-Safe Sound, Pre-Safe Impulse Side, and car-to-x communication. Rear-passenger airbags and a rear-seat belt bag are available.
- Infotainment: The cabin centers on a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen with the MBUX system, plus a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. Augmented video for navigation is standard, and an augmented reality head-up display is available.
- Fuel efficiency: The S500 is rated at up to 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined, while the S580 is rated at 16 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered in 4 trim levels: S500 4Matic Sedan Luxury Line, S500 4Matic Sedan AMG Line, S580 4Matic Sedan Luxury Line, S580 4Matic Sedan AMG Line.
Here's the short version:
- S500 4Matic Sedan Luxury Line: This is the most affordable path into the S-Class, and it gives you the core flagship experience with the six-cylinder mild-hybrid powertrain, standard all-wheel drive, and the full luxury-sedan mission. It is the best-value trim if you want the S-Class experience without stretching for the V8.
- S500 4Matic Sedan AMG Line: Choose this if you want the same S500 powertrain but prefer a sportier appearance and a more aggressive presentation. It makes sense if style matters to you and you want a richer visual package without moving up to the V8.
- S580 4Matic Sedan Luxury Line: This trim is for you if you want the stronger twin-turbo V8 and the most relaxed, effortless performance in the lineup. It suits buyers who care more about power and smoothness than price.
- S580 4Matic Sedan AMG Line: This combines the V8 with the sportier AMG appearance package, so it is the pick if you want maximum presence and stronger performance together.
- S580 4Matic Sedan Executive Line: This is the most expensive trim and the one to consider if you want the most upscale, executive-focused version of the standard gas model.
The safety package is broad across the lineup, with advanced driver-assistance features and executive-level rear-seat safety options available.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find opportunities.
- Deal availability: 25.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,103 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.42% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 86.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $63,227.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $63,231 sits slightly below last year's $71,386.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more selectively now. For a future seller, the softer trend means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment. Well-kept examples with desirable trims and clean history should hold up better than neglected ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class safe?
It earns 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Mercedes-Benz equips the S-Class with a long list of standard and available driver-assistance features, including active distance assist Distronic, active stop-and-go assist, active steering assist, active emergency stop assist, active lane-change assistant, active brake assist, active speed limit assist, active blind-spot assist, active lane-keeping assist, active parking assist with Parktronic, Pre-Safe Plus with Pre-Safe Sound, Pre-Safe Impulse Side, and car-to-x communication.
Magic Vision Control is standard, and rear-passenger airbags and a rear-seat belt bag are available for executive-focused protection. The safety setup is especially strong, though some rear-seat protection features are not standard on every version.
Should I buy a 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 25.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.42% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines a mild-hybrid powertrain, premium materials, and flagship-level tech in a full-size luxury sedan.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $60,248, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $63,231 average.
- It brings a redesigned flagship with new powertrains and more sophisticated infotainment.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $78,262, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $63,231 average.
- It adds a plug-in hybrid powertrain with impressive electric range.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, luxury, and modern tech, the 2022 is the strongest all-around choice. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better value path. If you want the newer plug-in hybrid direction and can pay more, the 2023 is the upgrade to compare.
