CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Toyota Tundra
overall

Summary
With 1,834 currently listed for sale and an average price of $39,239.00, 32.4% of 2021 Toyota Tundras for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Toyota Tundra 4.55 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2021 Toyota Tundra stands out as a full-size pickup that leans on proven fundamentals rather than chasing the newest truck trends. Its design and underpinnings date back to the mid-2000s, yet Toyota kept it relevant with modern infotainment and safety technologies. That combination gives it a distinctive appeal for buyers who want a truck that feels familiar and straightforward, but still has enough contemporary equipment to stay competitive.
It also has several practical strengths that matter in daily use. The Tundra is described as powerful, spacious, and capable of good towing capacity, which fits its core mission as a work-focused truck. At the same time, its age shows in limited bed and cab configurations, poor fuel economy, and outdated technology. For shoppers who value durability, space, and towing ability more than the latest features, the 2021 Toyota Tundra offers a clear and honest package.

Smooth ride, very quite, and comfortable. We love it and won’t be buying but a Toyota Tundra from now on; I just wish that I checked into them sooner, my wife had been wanting one for years. Yes, it is a good value. Only thing missing on mine is a hard cover camper for the bed. But I plan on getting that taken care of. Compared to my last truck, 1500 Ram has nothing on this truck. This truck has more in its extras, smoother and quiter ride, and it looks better.

The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners repeatedly praise the Tundra for its spacious cabin, powerful performance, and reliability, and they also like the smooth ride and solid construction. The main trade-offs are its outdated technology and poor fuel economy, which show up in both owner feedback and expert evaluation.

The expert evaluation also emphasizes that Toyota kept the Tundra relevant with modern infotainment and high-tech safety features, which helps it feel less dated where it matters most. Toyota’s Safety Sense P suite adds another layer of everyday confidence, and the truck’s standard safety equipment reinforces its durable, no-nonsense character.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that age-related wear can matter more than the badge, so condition and maintenance history should carry extra weight.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Tundra?
At 74.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a truck that’s been used for towing or work. Focus on overall condition, signs of heavy use, and whether the truck’s equipment matches the way you plan to use it. Because this model leans on older fundamentals, a clean, well-maintained example matters more than chasing the lowest sticker price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR is the most basic version, with halogen headlights, steel wheels, manual climate control, cloth seating, and a simpler cabin setup, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience features. The Limited is the best-value choice if you want more content without having to add many options, and the Platinum and 1794 Edition bring more upscale touches.
- Powertrain: The Tundra uses a 5.7-liter V8 with 391 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and four-wheel drive with low range is available.
- Safety package: Safety Sense P is standard and includes forward-collision warning and avoidance, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. Optional blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors are available, so some convenience safety features still depend on trim or options.
- Infotainment: A standard 7-inch touchscreen includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa, while an available 8-inch screen adds navigation. The system also includes Bluetooth, USB ports, and WiFi hotspot capability.
- Fuel efficiency: The rear-wheel-drive model returns 13 mpg city, 17 mpg highway, and 15 mpg combined; the four-wheel-drive model returns 13 mpg city, 17 mpg highway, and 14 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Toyota Tundra trim should I buy?
The 2021 Toyota Tundra is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, Limited, TRD Pro, Platinum, and 1794 Edition.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the value-focused starting point, and it gives you the core Tundra formula with basic comfort and utility equipment. Choose it if you want the lowest entry price and don’t mind a simpler cabin.
- SR5: This is the trim most shoppers should start with because it adds meaningful everyday upgrades like power-adjustable front seats and a larger 8-inch touchscreen. It’s the best-value trim if you want a better balance of price and equipment.
- Limited: This is the sweet spot if you want a more complete truck without stepping into luxury pricing. It adds 20-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, and a 10-way power driver’s seat.
- TRD Pro: This is the off-road-focused choice, with a 2-inch lift, Fox off-road shock absorbers, all-terrain tires, beefed-up skid plates, and a TRD exhaust. Pick it if you want the most rugged-looking and most trail-oriented version.
- Platinum: This is the upscale pick, with heated-and-ventilated front seats, chrome heated power-folding mirrors, and more premium interior trim. It suits you if comfort and appearance matter more than value.
- 1794 Edition: This shares much of the Platinum’s content but adds its own visual and interior touches. It’s the right choice if you want a more distinctive upscale feel.
Safety Sense P is standard across the lineup, so you’re getting the core driver-assistance suite no matter which trim you choose.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Tundra?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,871 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.41% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $36,625.89, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Toyota Tundra's resale value?
The current average of $39,058 sits slightly below last year's $39,617.
That mild decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit short-term appreciation if you plan to resell soon. For future sellers, the good news is that the Tundra’s reputation for durability and owner satisfaction should help keep demand steady. Trucks with a loyal following and strong satisfaction scores often hold attention better than similarly priced alternatives.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.55/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Toyota Tundra safe?
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, and it includes forward-collision warning and avoidance, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. Every Tundra also comes standard with eight airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, trailer sway control, and an integrated trailer brake controller. Optional blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors can add more confidence, but those features are not standard on every version.
Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Tundra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.41% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.55/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 keeps the old-school Tundra formula but adds modern infotainment and standard safety tech.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $37,150, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $39,058 average.
- It emphasizes bulletproof reliability and a spacious cabin.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $39,381, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $39,058 average.
- It brings an all-new design with more modern mechanicals and broader configuration choices.
The bottom line: If you want the classic Tundra experience with proven hardware and a lower price than the next-generation truck, the 2021 is the right target. If your priority is saving money, the 2020 is the better value play; if you want a major redesign and can spend more, the 2022 is the upgrade path.
