Is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime a good car?

Generally — 4.21/5 from owners and 8.17/10 from our experts point to a strong overall case. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

Drivers consistently praise its powerful performance, excellent electric range, and modern technology features. They also like the spacious interior and comfort, which make it useful for road trips and daily errands.

The trade-offs are the price point, interior materials, and noise levels during the ride. In practical terms, this fits you best if you want an electrified SUV with lively driving character and everyday versatility, rather than the cheapest path into a RAV4.

Good and great deals account for 37.7% of listings, so there is still some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime reliable?

Owners rate it 4.21/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Drivers describe it as dependable, with strong long-term appeal thanks to its power, range, and comfort. The expert evaluation also points to a refined powertrain and a quiet, smooth ride, which supports the impression that it should be easy to live with over time.

Toyota also includes a 3.3-kilowatt onboard charger, and the XSE trim gets a 6.6-kW charger that shortens Level 2 charging time. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the battery, charging habits, and overall condition match the premium price you are paying.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the vehicle history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a plug-in hybrid where charging behavior matters. Focus on overall condition, signs of wear in the cabin, and whether the vehicle has been regularly charged and maintained. If possible, confirm that the features you want are actually present on the specific listing, since equipment varies by trim.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE trim is the entry point, while the XSE adds more equipment and a more upscale feature set. The base cabin is functional, but the interior materials do not feel like a major step up, so you should compare equipment carefully if you want the best value.
• Powertrain: It uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid setup with a dedicated rear electric motor for all-wheel drive and a combined output of 302 hp. Toyota estimates 42 miles of electric range and 94 MPGe combined, so charging habits matter a lot.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, including pre-collision system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, automatic high beams, road-sign assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and eight airbags. Lane-tracing assist is not as strong as some rival systems.
• Infotainment: The SE gets an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a built-in WiFi hotspot. The XSE upgrades to a 9.0-inch screen, and a head-up display and video rearview mirror are available.
• Fuel efficiency: Toyota anticipates 42 miles of electric range and 94 MPGe combined. The standard charger supports a 12-hour recharge from a 120-volt outlet or 4.5 hours on a 240-volt Level 2 charger, while the XSE’s 6.6-kW charger cuts Level 2 charging time to 2.5 hours.

Which 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime is offered in 2 trim levels: SE and XSE.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the trim to target if you want the lowest entry price and the core RAV4 Prime experience. You still get the plug-in hybrid powertrain, standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a WiFi hotspot, so it covers the essentials well.
• XSE: This is the better pick if you want the most complete version of the RAV4 Prime. It adds a 9.0-inch screen, a 6.6-kW charger, and available tech features such as a head-up display and video rearview mirror, making it the best-value choice for shoppers who plan to keep the vehicle long term and want more convenience.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on both trims, so you do not need to move up just to get the core driver-assistance package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.

• Deal availability: 37.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 265 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.72% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 80.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $30,851, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime's resale value?

The current average of $31,834 sits slightly below last year's $33,063.

That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently now, but it also means future sellers may need to stay competitive if the market remains well supplied. The current range suggests the model has already adjusted downward from last year, which can support demand from value-focused shoppers.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.21/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime safe?

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS, and other RAV4 versions received five-star ratings from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in the driver’s side front and rollover crash tests.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and it includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, automatic high beams, and road-sign assist. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and eight airbags are also standard.

One caveat is that lane-tracing assist does not work as well as similar systems from some other manufacturers. The IIHS result also missed the highest rating because of poorly rated headlights on other RAV4 versions.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 37.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.72% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.21/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It introduces Toyota’s plug-in hybrid powertrain to the RAV4 lineup for the first time.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $35,236, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $31,834 average.
• It carries over without major changes.

The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2021 is the smarter buy because pricing has softened and the model already delivers the core RAV4 Prime strengths. If you are willing to pay more for a newer example, the 2022 makes sense mainly for shoppers who want the same formula with a later model year.
