How much does the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?

Prices have softened 9.96% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 753 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?

Generally — the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns a 4/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Technology.

Owners consistently praise its luxurious feel, advanced technology, and remarkable performance. Many also highlight the thrilling acceleration and enjoyable handling. On the downside, the high price and run-flat tire complaints are the main recurring trade-offs.

As a flagship full-size luxury sedan, it fits buyers who want top-tier comfort, prestige, and a tech-forward cabin. With 36.3% of listings priced as good or great deals, the market still offers some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a car that feels luxurious and enjoyable to live with over time, with no broad pattern of trouble-free praise beyond its strong overall satisfaction. The expert review also emphasizes that the S-Class is a highly sophisticated machine, which means its systems are advanced and tightly integrated.

Mercedes backs it with a four-year, 50,000-mile basic warranty and a four-year, 50,000-mile powertrain warranty. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a complex flagship can become expensive if it hasn’t been maintained carefully.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the vehicle history report carefully, because a clean title alone does not tell you how the car was maintained or repaired. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on the electronics, suspension, and any signs of tire or wheel wear, since this is a highly complex luxury sedan. Pay close attention to how the cabin tech, driver-assist systems, and ride quality behave on a test drive.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S500 4Matic and S580 4Matic differ most in engine output and overall performance, while both share the same flagship luxury mission. The base configuration already brings a high-end cabin and advanced tech, so the better value depends on whether you want the stronger V8 or are satisfied with the six-cylinder model.
• Powertrain: The S500 4Matic uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, while the S580 4Matic uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with 496 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Both use a nine-speed automatic transmission and EQ Boost mild-hybrid assistance.
• Safety package: Standard driver-assist features include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, automated lane centering, automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, lane-change assist, traffic-sign recognition, a driver-attention monitor, and a 360-degree camera system. Mercedes also includes an industry-first rear-passenger airbag.
• Infotainment: The standard setup includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch OLED central touchscreen, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also supports over-the-air-style modern connectivity through the updated MBUX system, along with six USB ports.
• Fuel efficiency: Mercedes says the mild-hybrid setup improves efficiency, and the test car averaged 22.4 mpg over about 300 miles of driving.

Which 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered in 2 trim levels: S500 4Matic, S580 4Matic.

Here's the short version:

• S500 4Matic: This is the smarter starting point if you want the S-Class experience with the lower entry price. It still gives you the flagship cabin, advanced infotainment, and strong six-cylinder performance, making it the best-value choice for most shoppers.
• S580 4Matic: Choose this if you want the stronger V8 and the most effortless acceleration in the lineup. It’s the more indulgent option, but it costs more and makes the most sense if performance matters as much as luxury.

Mercedes’ standard safety suite is already extensive, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core driver-assist features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 36.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 753 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.96% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 82.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $58,446, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?

The current average of $58,446 sits slightly below last year's $64,910.

That price decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than just the badge alone.

Because the S-Class is a high-end flagship with strong owner satisfaction, well-kept examples should continue to attract interest. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class safe?

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class does not have crash-test ratings from NHTSA or IIHS.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard driver-assistance equipment includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, automated lane centering, automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, lane-change assist, traffic-sign recognition, a driver-attention monitor, and a 360-degree camera system. Mercedes also highlights an industry-first rear-passenger airbag.

The main caveat is that this is a freshly redesigned, low-volume luxury sedan, so formal crash-test coverage is absent. That means you should lean more heavily on the standard safety equipment and the vehicle’s condition when shopping used.

Should I buy a 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 36.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.96% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The redesign brings a more sophisticated infotainment system, new powertrains, and more aerodynamic bodywork.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $62,702, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $58,446 average.
• It adds a broader powertrain presentation with published EPA fuel-economy figures.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2021 is the stronger buy because it combines a lower average price with a fresh redesign and strong owner satisfaction. If you’re willing to spend more for the next model year’s higher average price and published efficiency data, the 2022 is the alternative to compare.
