CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota Corolla
overall

Summary
With 241 currently listed for sale near Washington, DC and an average price of $16,154.00, 31.1% of 2020 Toyota Corollas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Corolla 4.69 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Corolla stands out by adding style and a bit of excitement to a nameplate long associated with affordability, reliability, efficiency, and practicality. It is still presented as a compact sedan that is cheap to buy, dependable, thrifty with fuel, and roomy enough for a frugal family, but the redesigned version brings a more engaging personality to that familiar formula.
That broader appeal is reinforced by a few notable strengths: a manual transmission is available, premium interior materials are part of the package, and advanced safety features come standard. Owners also praise its excellent fuel economy, reliable performance, modern safety features, stylish design, and good value for the price. The main drawback noted in the test-drive data is uncomfortable seats, and some owners also mention that the sound insulation could be better and that back legroom is a bit tight.

I bought a 2020 Toyota Corolla LE and owned it for about a year and a half. It rides smooth, has great safety features, and is amazing with gas mileage. I was averaging a combined 36.7mpg everywhere I went. I’ve never owned a vehicle so new, so getting used to the fancy new cruise control that matches the speed of the vehicle in front of you took some getting used to. The lane assist was a really cool feature! However, I live in the desert of New Mexico, so if the sun hits the road just right, it’ll bounce off the painted stripes and make it unrecognizable to the sensors. Other than that, it’s a great feature! For a compact car, it has enough space for a single person or a family of two or three. Spacious cargo bay! The leg room is a little tight in the back, especially if the driver or passenger scoots back a little. That being said, I was hoping the seats would be a little more comfy being a 2020 model. Kinda stiff and not super comfortable for 1hr+ rides. Not bad, but could be better. All in all, this is a great car with great safety features that I would recommend to anyone, even a new driver thanks to the warning systems aboard! Love it.

It is a manual transmission. I was searching for the S PLUS model but since they were discontinued, I saw that this model was similar (smart key/push button starter) That is a plus, you will never lock your car with the keys inside. Mainly (the manual Transmission) I have been driving manual transmission for over 30 years, I wish they would never stop making them. I am very impressed with Corollas because of there reliability. The prevoius 3 vehicles all have been Corollas Manual Transmission, the last one was a 2015 S PLUS model I purchased in February 2018 with 54K miles on it. It currently has 391K and I never had a break down or been stranded, not even the clutch, all Ive done was change the oil every 5K, tires, battery, breaks, shocks and struts when needed. Corolla is an excellent reliable vehicle.

How much does the 2020 Toyota Corolla cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,563 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,785.50 |
| Year-Round High | $16,896.19 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,896 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.97% |
Prices have softened 1.97% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,324 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare against.
If you find a listing below $15,785.50, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Toyota Corolla earns a 4.69/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating.
The standout strength is Look and feel at 8/10.
Owners consistently praise its excellent fuel economy, reliable performance, modern safety features, stylish design, and good value for the price. The trade-offs are familiar compact-car compromises: uncomfortable seats, some road noise, and a bit of tightness in the back seat.
For you, that means the Corolla makes the most sense if you want a practical daily driver with a more polished personality than older versions of the nameplate. It still fits the compact-sedan brief, but it adds enough style and everyday appeal to broaden the audience beyond pure budget shoppers.
28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla reliable?
Owners rate it 4.69/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to reliable performance and a car you can count on for everyday use, while also emphasizing its strong fuel economy and good value. The expert review also describes it as dependable and thrifty, which reinforces the sense that this is a low-drama ownership choice.
Toyota’s cost-effectiveness angle is part of the appeal here, since the Corolla is positioned as a practical, efficient compact sedan rather than an expensive ownership proposition. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical drama and more about whether the specific car has been cared for well enough to preserve comfort and refinement.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Corolla?
At 58.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and signs of prior repair. Because comfort complaints show up in the feedback, it also makes sense to spend extra time checking seat condition, cabin noise, and rear-seat space for your needs.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The L trim is the entry point, while LE and XLE add more comfort and convenience, and SE and XSE bring a sportier look and more premium interior materials. The base setup is the most stripped-down, so you should compare equipment carefully if you want a better cabin experience.
- Powertrain: L, LE, and XLE use a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder with 139 horsepower, while SE and XSE upgrade to a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 169 horsepower. The SE also offers a 6-speed manual, and the more powerful setup is the one to consider if you want the Corolla to feel more responsive.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes low-light pedestrian detection, daytime cyclist detection, road-sign recognition, and Lane Tracing Assist. Blind-spot monitoring is standard on XLE and XSE and optional on LE and SE, so lower trims leave you with fewer safety conveniences.
- Infotainment: The system uses Entune 3.0 with a 7-inch screen on lower trims and an 8-inch display on LE and above. Apple CarPlay is included, Android Auto is not, and wireless device charging is available on XSE and XLE.
- Fuel efficiency: The hybrid LE is rated at 52 mpg combined, and the gas-powered test car returned 31 mpg city, 38 highway, and 34 combined.
Which 2020 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Corolla is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, XSE.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the simplest way into the Corolla, and it makes sense if your priority is keeping the purchase price down while still getting the Corolla’s core strengths.
- LE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds useful convenience without pushing you into the pricier sportier models.
- XLE: Choose this if you want a more upscale-feeling Corolla with more comfort and convenience features.
- SE: This is the trim to target if you want the more engaging 2.0-liter engine and the option of a 6-speed manual.
- XSE: This is the most complete gas model, pairing the stronger engine with the richest feature set and the most polished feel.
Blind-spot monitoring is standard on XLE and XSE, while LE and SE get it only as an option.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Corolla?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop but still need to move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,324 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.97% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,785.50, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Corolla's resale value?
The current average of $16,563 sits slightly below last year's $16,896.
That softer pricing suggests the Corolla is still accessible on the used market, which can help you buy at a reasonable entry point. For a future seller, the current trend implies you may not see rapid appreciation, but the model’s broad appeal should help support steady demand.
Because this Corolla scores well with owners, it should remain attractive to used shoppers who value reliability and efficiency. That kind of demand tends to cushion resale value over time, even when prices drift lower in the short term.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.69/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla safe?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named it a Top Safety Pick, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave it a five-star rating for frontal-impact protection.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on every Corolla and includes low-light pedestrian detection, daytime cyclist detection, road-sign recognition, and Lane Tracing Assist. Lane Tracing Assist works with adaptive cruise control to help keep the car centered in its lane, and the system is generally described as refined and accurate.
A key caveat is that blind-spot monitoring is not standard across the lineup; it comes standard on XLE and XSE and is optional on LE and SE. The review also notes that the lane-departure warning alert can be irritating, which may matter if you’re sensitive to warning sounds.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.97% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.69/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 adds a more engaging personality, premium interior materials, and standard advanced safety features.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,075, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $16,563 average.
- It adds the Apex Edition for SE and XSE, with a track-tuned sport suspension and lowered ride height.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the smarter buy because it combines strong owner satisfaction, a softer price, and broad market availability. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model-year twist and the Apex Edition’s extra sportiness, the 2021 is the one to compare next.
