Summary

Why it stands out
The 2020 Honda Pilot is a versatile, comfortable three-row SUV with a strong practical appeal. It offers tons of cargo space, an adult-friendly third row, and an impressive list of standard safety features, which helps explain why it remains attractive to shoppers who want family-friendly utility in a mainstream package. Its powerful engine is another plus, and owners also praise its performance, comfort, fuel efficiency, spacious interior, and responsive handling.
Even so, the Pilot no longer stands out from the competition the way it once did. Honda’s driver controls and in-car tech are its biggest shortcomings, and the interior materials feel cheap. Some owners also note that it is not the best choice for towing and that city fuel consumption can be higher than in other vehicles, so buyers should weigh its strengths in space and comfort against those limitations.

Truly next level, crazy fast and responsive SUV for what it is, did not expect to be so agile and fast. Throttle response and braking are unbelievable again, for something this big. Corners amazing, all while getting great gas mileage. This is the Black Edition, it’s better than anything else in its class, period.

Perfect size SUV. I love everything about it. The hands free options are amazing. The fact that you dont have a key switch, was a little getting use too. Drives smoothly. Great on gas. Very comfortable interior.

Great value with awesome upgrades! Wish it had the right rear view mirror camera like our 2015 Honda Accord. Much better bang for my buck in gas mpg than the other vehicles we considered like the Lexus 460 and Toyota Highlander.

How much does the 2020 Honda Pilot cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $22,517 |
| Year-Round Low | $22,505.70 |
| Year-Round High | $24,591.53 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,593 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.44% |
Prices have softened 8.44% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,452 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $22,505.70, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Honda Pilot a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.7/5, and the expert rating is 8/10. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its spacious interior, responsive handling, comfort, fuel efficiency, and performance. That lines up with the Pilot’s use case as a family-friendly three-row SUV with lots of cargo space and an adult-friendly third row.
The trade-offs are clear: Honda’s driver controls and in-car tech are the biggest weak spots, and the interior materials can feel cheap. The Pilot makes the most sense if you want practical space and comfort more than a polished cabin experience.
With 32.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Honda Pilot reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on performance, comfort, fuel efficiency, and a spacious cabin that owners seem happy to live with over time. That kind of feedback matters when you’re looking for a used SUV you can count on.
The expert review also describes the Pilot as refined and comfortable for commuting and road trips, which supports the idea that it should be easy to live with over the long haul. Honda’s maintenance-friendly reputation is reinforced by the model’s straightforward family-hauler mission.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the cabin, controls, and prior use have been treated well.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Honda Pilot?
At 69.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because this is a family SUV, condition matters a lot: check the interior wear, seat function, and how well the tech and controls operate.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LX comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, remote keyless entry, push-button start, power locks, and power windows with a one-touch driver’s window. The EX adds remote start, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, LED fog lights, Smart Entry, tri-zone climate control, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and heated front seats. The EX-L adds leather upholstery, a power liftgate, a power moonroof, second-row in-door sunshades, and a 4-way power-adjustable front passenger’s seat. Touring adds 20-inch alloy wheels, integrated roof rails, blue ambient interior lighting, an upgraded stereo, and courtesy approach lights. Elite adds power-folding side mirrors with integrated turn signals, a panoramic sunroof, a heated steering wheel, and heated and ventilated front seats. Black Edition adds unique black-painted wheels, black exterior paint, and black grille and accents.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. LX, EX, and EX-L use a 6-speed automatic, while Touring, Elite, and Black Edition use a 9-speed automatic that provides more refined acceleration and should help fuel economy.
- Safety package: HondaSensing is standard and includes forward-collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Front and side-impact airbags, child-seat anchors, Vehicle Stability Assist, and traction control are also standard. Front and rear parking sensors and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert are optional.
- Infotainment: The LX gets a 5-inch color LCD screen, Bluetooth, and a USB port. All other trims use an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. HD Radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Cabin Control Remote Capability are included on all but the LX.
- Fuel efficiency: The most efficient setup is the FWD 9-speed configuration at 20 mpg city, 27 highway, 23 combined. AWD with the 9-speed returns 19 mpg city, 27 highway, 22 combined. The 6-speed FWD setup returns 19 mpg city, 26 highway, 22 combined, while the 6-speed AWD setup returns 18 mpg city, 26 highway, 21 combined.
Which 2020 Honda Pilot trim should I buy?
The 2020 Honda Pilot is offered in 6 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, Elite, and Black Edition.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the least expensive way into the Pilot, but it’s also the most stripped-down. You get the basics, yet you miss the stronger convenience and tech upgrades that make the higher trims easier to live with.
- EX: This is the best-value trim. It adds remote start, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, LED fog lights, Smart Entry, tri-zone climate control, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat, making it the sweet spot for most shoppers.
- EX-L: Choose this if you want a more upscale family SUV. Leather upholstery, a power liftgate, a power moonroof, and second-row sunshades make it a strong comfort upgrade over the EX.
- Touring: This trim adds more premium touches like 20-inch wheels, roof rails, ambient lighting, an upgraded stereo, and more available tech, so it suits you if you want a more fully equipped Pilot without going all the way to the top.
- Elite: This is the luxury-leaning choice. The panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel, and heated and ventilated front seats make it the most comfortable version in the lineup.
- Black Edition: This is the style-focused top trim. It brings the same general equipment level as the Elite, but with unique blacked-out exterior details.
HondaSensing is standard across the lineup, so you don’t have to move up trims to get the core safety suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Honda Pilot?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find value.
- Deal availability: 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,452 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.44% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $22,505.70, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Honda Pilot's resale value?
The current average of $22,517 sits slightly below last year's $24,593.
That softer pricing suggests the Pilot has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy well now and keep the vehicle in clean condition, you may be better positioned than someone who paid closer to the prior-year average.
The current price trend also signals that buyers have become more selective, so resale will likely reward well-kept examples with strong equipment and clean history. Higher-trim Pilots may hold appeal if they’re priced competitively against newer alternatives.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Honda Pilot safe?
The Pilot earns a five-star overall crash test rating from NHTSA and a Good rating from IIHS.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
HondaSensing is standard and includes forward-collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Front and side-impact airbags, child-seat anchors, Vehicle Stability Assist, and traction control are also standard.
Optional safety equipment includes front and rear parking sensors and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. That means you can add some useful features, but the core safety suite is already built in.
Should I buy a 2020 Honda Pilot or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.44% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 stands out for its standard HondaSensing safety suite and strong family-hauler practicality.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $25,474, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $22,517 average.
- It adds a more refined overall feel and a stronger emphasis on interior quality and driving enjoyment.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter buy because it combines lower pricing, strong safety, and broad family utility. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model with a more polished feel, the 2021 is the better secondary path.
