CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Toyota Tacoma
overall

Summary
With 283 currently listed for sale near Baltimore, MD and an average price of $27,003.00, 28.6% of 2019 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Toyota Tacoma 4.22 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
87.6% of 2019 Tacoma models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Toyota Tacoma stands out by leaning fully into what a pickup is supposed to be. It is described as unapologetically unrefined, a truck “pure and simple” that does not try to be anything else, and that raw honesty is presented as part of its appeal rather than a flaw. The truck also has a reputation for being a faithful companion and a trusted partner that is ready for just about anything, which helps explain why it has such a loyal following.
Its strengths are straightforward: stylish design and excellent value for money. The evaluation also notes that, over the course of a week of testing, the truck became more endearing with time, and that there is a good reason it is the best-selling midsize pickup in America. At the same time, it is not trying to hide its compromises. Outdated technology and poor ride quality are clear drawbacks, so the 2019 Toyota Tacoma is best suited to buyers who value character, utility, and a no-nonsense approach more than polish.

This vehicle had a terrible engine vibration under load, it was dirty, and dirt everywhere , the tow hitch showed signs of heavy work, and when trying to explain it to the dealer , they more or less couldn’t wait for me to get off there lot.

Love this model, but not this particular unit. It has been hit three times, the back bumper was smashed. I was told it was going to be replaced. The truck was filthy, and the salesman was not honest about the Carfax or the advertised price.

Generally — the 2019 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.22/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Drivers commonly praise its reliability, solid performance, and longevity, and many also value its resale strength and overall usefulness. The truck’s loyal following lines up with its reputation as a dependable, trusted partner that can handle a lot of different jobs.
The trade-offs are clear: outdated technology and poor ride quality are recurring drawbacks, and the cabin can feel limited in space. In practical terms, this is a truck that makes the most sense if you care more about character, utility, and value than polish.
Good and great deals account for 31.2% of listings, so you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.22/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to reliability, longevity, and a trouble-free ownership experience as major strengths, with many drivers saying they trust it for the long haul. The expert evaluation also describes it as legendary for its indestructibility and notes that it is known to hold its value over time.
It also comes with free scheduled maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a truck with this kind of mileage and age may have seen hard use, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota Tacoma?
At 63.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used for towing, off-roading, or heavy daily work. Focus on wear items, signs of body repair, and whether the truck’s condition matches its mileage and price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Toyota differentiates the trims with unique grilles, wheels, hoods, and finishes, and the cabin stays intentionally simple with hard, durable plastics, analog gauges, and large knobs and buttons. The base setup is functional rather than fancy, so you should expect fewer comfort and convenience touches at lower trims.
- Powertrain: Most Tacomas use a direct-injected, Atkinson-cycle, 3.5-liter V6 with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. V6 models include towing hardware, and the truck can be paired with rear-wheel drive or part-time 4WD; TRD versions add Multi-terrain Select and Crawl Control.
- Safety package: Every Tacoma gets Toyota Safety Sense, including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, sway warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available for most versions, but not every trim gets the same coverage.
- Infotainment: The truck uses a 7-inch display, and the system lacks wireless smartphone integration and modern over-the-air convenience. The interface is dated, and the controls are not especially glove-friendly.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert test truck returned 20 mpg in combined driving according to EPA estimates, averaged 20.1 mpg over a week, and the test loop produced 18.9 mpg.
Which 2019 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2019 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the entry point if you want the Tacoma’s core toughness at the lowest price, but you should expect the fewest comfort and convenience features. It makes the most sense if you mainly want a work truck and plan to keep costs down.
- SR5: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more everyday usability without pushing you into the pricier specialty models. If you want a balanced Tacoma, this is the one to start with.
- TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more style-forward Tacoma with a sportier feel and a stronger visual presence. It suits buyers who want a little more personality without going all the way to the off-road-focused trims.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the right pick if you want the Tacoma’s off-road hardware and the added capability that comes with it. It is the trim to target if trail use matters more than on-road comfort.
- Limited: This trim leans into comfort and everyday refinement, and it is the one used in the expert test truck. It is a good fit if you want a more upscale Tacoma and can live without the TRD extras.
- TRD Pro: This is the most specialized version and the one to choose if you want the most capability-focused Tacoma in the lineup. It is best for buyers who want the most rugged setup and are willing to pay for it.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, while blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available for most versions.

If you find a listing below $28,441.14, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $29,611 sits slightly below last year's $30,359.
That kind of softening can help you as a buyer now, but it also suggests the truck is still holding value reasonably well relative to its reputation. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that Tacoma demand remains supported by its loyal following, so well-kept examples should continue to attract attention.
Because the model is widely viewed as durable and desirable, condition and trim choice will matter a lot when you eventually resell. A clean, well-maintained truck should be easier to move than one with accident history or obvious wear.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.22/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The Tacoma Double Cab earns an Acceptable rating from IIHS for small overlap front passenger protection, while headlight performance and LATCH anchor access rate Marginal. The Double Cab also earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, sway warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available for most versions.
The main caveat is that some crash-test results are not class-leading, so you should pay close attention to trim-specific equipment and cab configuration when shopping used.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.46% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.22/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 keeps the Tacoma’s rugged, no-nonsense character while pairing it with standard Toyota Safety Sense and strong value.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $31,100, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $29,611 average.
- It adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and an 8-inch screen.
The bottom line: If you want the better bargain, the 2019 is the smarter buy because it already delivers the Tacoma formula at a lower average price. If you want newer tech and can stretch your budget, the 2020 is the cleaner upgrade path.
