Why it stands out
The 2019 Toyota Prius stands out as a practical, efficient, and affordable hybrid that covers a lot of the basics well. It is described as reliable, efficient, practical, and safe, and it also earns praise for being decent to drive. For shoppers focused on value, its excellent value for money and fuel efficiency are major strengths, and owners commonly appreciate its impressive fuel economy, quiet interior, and comfort for daily driving.
Toyota also made several changes for 2019 that help define this model year. The design was toned down, the trim-level strategy was revised, and a new electric all-wheel-drive option was added. Those updates broaden the Prius’ appeal, but its styling remains a drawback, and its outdated technology may be a concern for some buyers.

The 2019 Prius is an excellent car. Great mileage and a very comfortable ride. In our Prius XLE, we get about 52 mpg. We have been driving the Toyota Prius brand for over 5 years. Great choice. Lots of features but the sound system is excellent and we can run Youtube and Spotify through the car as well as all phone calls.

Great mileage and surprisingly has power and acceleration if Normal or Power mode is selected. The Eco mode sustains well and for cruising on highway or city is sufficient! Very Happy

How much does the 2019 Toyota Prius cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $19,758 |
| Year-Round Low | $17,995 |
| Year-Round High | $20,098 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,161 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +3.11% |
Prices are up 3.11% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 341 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2019 Toyota Prius a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Toyota Prius earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its impressive fuel economy, quiet interior, and comfort for daily driving. They also highlight its reliability and the savings on gas, which fit the Prius’ practical, value-focused mission.
The main trade-offs are its polarizing styling and outdated technology, and the expert review also notes that some shoppers may find the sound system and lack of stronger performance less appealing. For you, that means the Prius makes the most sense if you want an efficient, practical daily driver rather than a style-first or tech-first choice.
Only 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the best examples may require quick action.
Is the 2019 Toyota Prius reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to reliability, dependability, and trouble-free ownership, with many drivers saying they feel confident counting on it for daily use. The expert review also describes it as historically reliable and trouble-free, which reinforces the Prius’ reputation for long-term ownership confidence.
Toyota’s cost-effectiveness notes also point to a history of reliable, trouble-free ownership, which is exactly the kind of language used when a used car has a strong durability reputation. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the powertrain reputation and more about finding a well-kept example with consistent maintenance.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota Prius?
At 64.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision or shows uneven wear. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, tire wear, and any signs that the hybrid system or safety equipment has been repaired after damage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from L Eco to Limited, and the lower trims miss some of the nicer convenience and tech features found higher up. The Limited trim is the one that gets the most upscale equipment, while the LE adds useful safety hardware that base trims do not have.
- Powertrain: A 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine works with an electric motor for a combined 121 horsepower. The optional electric AWD system adds a rear motor for low-speed traction, but it also reduces fuel economy.
- Safety package: Every Prius gets Toyota Safety Sense with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. LE trim adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors with parking assist.
- Infotainment: The standard setup uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and a CD player. The Limited trim gets an 11.6-inch split-screen display with navigation, the Entune App Suite, a premium JBL sound system, satellite radio, and Safety Connect, but neither system includes Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: A standard front-drive Prius gets 52 mpg in combined driving, or 56 mpg in L Eco trim. The AWD-e version gets 50 mpg, and the review notes that the AWD system reduces efficiency and cargo space.
Which 2019 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2019 Toyota Prius is offered in 4 trim levels: L Eco, LE, XLE, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- L Eco: This is the efficiency-first choice, with the best combined fuel economy in the lineup. It makes the most sense if you want the lowest running costs and can live without the extra convenience and luxury features found higher up.
- LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors with parking assist. If you want the smartest balance of price and safety equipment, this is the trim to target.
- XLE: This trim is the step up if you want a more upscale feel and more available equipment, including the option for AWD-e. It suits you if you want more comfort and flexibility without jumping all the way to the top trim.
- Limited: This is the most feature-rich version, with the 11.6-inch infotainment display, navigation, JBL audio, satellite radio, and Safety Connect. Buy this one if you want the most technology and convenience the Prius offers.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, while LE adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota Prius?
The market favors selective shopping, so you should act like a buyer in a seller’s market and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 341 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.11% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 64.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,995, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota Prius's resale value?
The current average of $19,758 sits slightly above last year's $19,161.
That upward move suggests the Prius is holding value reasonably well for a used hybrid, especially given its efficiency and practical reputation. For a future seller, that kind of price stability can help support a stronger resale position if the car is kept in good condition and documented well.
Because demand is still present and the model has a strong value story, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones. The market also tends to reward cars with a clear efficiency advantage, which works in the Prius’ favor.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Toyota Prius safe?
The 2019 Toyota Prius earns a five-star rating from NHTSA, with four-star front passenger protection in a frontal-impact crash, and it earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard on every Prius and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. LE trim adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors with parking assist.
One caveat is that the IIHS notes small overlap front passenger frontal impact protection as Acceptable rather than Good, so you should pay attention to crash history and repair quality on used examples.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.11% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 adds a revised trim strategy and an available electric all-wheel-drive option.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $21,162, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $19,758 average.
- It continues the Prius’ role as a benchmark hybrid with a stronger emphasis on versatility and technology.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2019 is the smarter buy because it combines strong owner satisfaction, solid safety, and a lower average price. If you can spend more and want the next model year’s broader hybrid appeal, the 2020 is the secondary path to consider.
