CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback
overall

Summary
With 249 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,763, 29.3% of 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
67.9% of 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback stands out as a small car that Toyota clearly aimed to make more stylish and more sophisticated. It is described as a big leap forward in those areas, and it is also presented as better to drive than the Corolla iM it replaces. That combination gives it a stronger personality than a typical economy hatchback, while still keeping the practical appeal that draws shoppers to the segment.
It also brings a strong value proposition, with excellent value for money and premium interior materials among its strengths. Owners commonly praise its smooth ride, great fuel economy, compact size, and easy maneuverability, along with its tech features and thoughtful design. The tradeoffs are worth noting, though: performance is fairly pedestrian, the back seat is cramped, and cargo space is limited, so buyers looking for maximum room or brisk acceleration may find its compromises more noticeable.

So far, I really like it. It reminds me of two of my previous vehicles: the Honda Fit and the Toyota Prius V, which are both excellent vehicles.

Amazing Car, easy and comfortable to drive. Love it

Reviewed a 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback on Sep 27, 2022
Rating is for SE Upgrade Edition (Canadian) (4.5 stars so I rounded up) We bought this car (used) as a commuter for me, and it was a downgrade from our main / previous car, a BMW. So there was a bit of a learning curve (nowhere near the zip, altogether different brakes) but the majority of cars Ive driven have been Toyota sedans / hatchbacks, so it felt very similar to those. Pluses: It is so compact and easy to park - I am a nervous driver, but find I am able to park in tight lots without too much stress. Fun to drive at a low price point (not just up front, but gas - it sips regular & maintenance is very reasonable). Zippy enough for my husband, who is more of a car guy. Fits me well (Im 57) and feels good when driving. My much larger husband (62, muscular build) fits and can drive it comfortably. SE Upgrade version has heated steering wheel (yay) and the nicer wheels. This model also has heated seats, backup camera, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise, lane departure warning, emergency braking, and probably some features Ive forgotten. Minuses: Very little cargo / passenger space. I took a road trip with 2 other people, and between us and our luggage, almost every available inch of the car was full (well, we didnt block the rear window). It may have 3 rear seats, but the passengers would all have to be quite small. It feels like less storage than our coupe BMW had. I have 2 family members with Honda Fits (2013 & 2016) and Fits have amazing cargo space in comparison. Not a lot of leg room for front passenger. There was a fuel pump recall, which the dealer took care of (but be aware and check the records). I find that it hesitates a little sometimes when trying to turn quickly from a stop or slow (like when trying to turn left or right when theres a gap in traffic). Im not sure if its just because the car is less powerful than our old one but Ive tried to change my driving techniques to make sure I look for larger gaps. Overall, this is not my dream car but it is the right car for me, and the car I can afford to drive and maintain at this time. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable, inexpensive, fun vehicle.

Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 8.00/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, great fuel economy, compact size, easy maneuverability, tech features, and thoughtful design. The overview also frames it as a more stylish, more sophisticated hatchback that still keeps practical appeal, which fits the way shoppers use this segment.
The main trade-offs are fairly pedestrian performance and limited space, especially in the back seat and cargo area. That means you should think of it as a smart, efficient daily driver rather than a hatchback built for maximum speed or maximum room.
Good and great deals make up 28.6% of listings, so there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner summary also points to a dependable-feeling package, with praise for the smooth ride, great fuel economy, and compact size that makes it easy to live with day to day.
The expert notes reinforce that impression by emphasizing Toyota’s longstanding reputation for durability and describing the car as likely to last for a long time. The cost-effectiveness discussion also highlights free scheduled maintenance for the first two years of ownership, which can help reduce early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the specific car has been maintained well and avoided hard use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback?
At 65.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because this car is often bought as a practical daily driver, condition matters a lot: check the cabin, infotainment, brakes, tires, and suspension for wear that could point to heavier use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The car is offered in SE and XSE trim. The XSE adds more equipment and a more upscale feel, while the base trim keeps the package simpler.
- Powertrain: A naturally aspirated 2.0-liter 4-cylinder makes 168 horsepower and is paired with a 6-speed manual or a Dynamic Shift CVT. The CVT adds launch gear behavior, pre-programmed ratios, and manual-shift mode with paddle shifters.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on every 2019 Corolla Hatchback. It includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist. Maximum adaptive cruise-control capability requires the CVT, and blind-spot warning does not include rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: An 8-inch touchscreen is standard, along with Apple CarPlay. Android Auto is not included. The system also brings fast-charge USB ports, connected navigation app support, Wi-Fi Connect, Safety Connect, Siri Eyes Free, and Amazon Alexa integration.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert test notes an EPA rating of 33 mpg in combined driving, and the car is described as delivering great fuel economy.
Which 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback trim should I buy?
The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback is offered in 2 trim levels: SE and XSE.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the simpler, lower-cost choice if you want the Corolla Hatchback’s core strengths without paying for extra equipment. It still gives you the standard safety suite, Apple CarPlay, and the same basic powertrain, so it makes sense if value is your top priority.
- XSE: This is the best-value trim if you want the more premium-feeling version. It adds more upscale equipment, a richer interior presentation, and more tech content, making it the better pick if you want the Corolla Hatchback to feel more polished.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, and maximum adaptive cruise-control capability requires the CVT.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback?
This is a seller’s market, so you should shop selectively and move quickly when you find a strong listing.
- Deal availability: 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 248 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.20% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 65.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,807, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback's resale value?
The current average of $17,693 sits slightly above last year's $17,311.
That upward move suggests the market has held up reasonably well for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. A stable-to-rising price trend usually helps support resale because it shows buyers are still willing to pay for the car’s mix of efficiency, practicality, and value.
If the model continues to attract shoppers looking for a compact hatchback with strong ownership appeal, that should help keep demand steady. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback safe?
The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on every 2019 Corolla Hatchback, and it includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist. The expert notes also say the adaptive cruise is fairly refined.
There are a couple of caveats to keep in mind. The lane-keeping and lane-centering systems can occasionally provide false alerts or actions that you may need to override, and blind-spot warning does not include rear cross-traffic alert. The expert also notes that the steering can feel worse when those systems are engaged.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.20% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Hatchbacks are hot right now, and this year stands out as more stylish, more sophisticated, and better to drive than the Corolla iM it replaces.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, owner satisfaction, and modern hatchback appeal, the 2019 is the right place to start. If you are especially price-sensitive, focus on the lower end of the range and be selective about condition and history, since the market still rewards clean, well-kept examples.
