The Toyota Corolla Hatchback builds on the Corolla compact sedan with more cargo space and versatility. Competitors include the Honda Civic and the Mazda Mazda3. ## What’s New for the 2024 Toyota Corolla Hatchback The Corolla Hatchback carries over unchanged for 2024, though the Nightshade Edition, based on the entry-level SE trim, returns after a year’s absence. The Corolla Hatchback was introduced for the 2019 model year and has seen minor updates in the years since, most notably with the introduction of Apple CarPlay as a standard feature and Android Auto as an option in 2020 and 2021, respectively, and updated infotainment and styling in 2023. ## Design The Corolla Hatchback offers up more cargo space than the sedan, despite being 10.5 inches shorter overall. Otherwise, these two versions of the Corolla are similar in design, though hatchbacks may be perceived as sportier, generally speaking. The Corolla Hatchback wears 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, and a taillight design shared with the GR Corolla performance version. The Nightshade Edition has dark contrasting exterior trim. ## Powertrain The Corolla Hatchback comes with just one powertrain. It pairs a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated for 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive (FWD). Normal, Eco, and Sport selectable driving modes tune response for the desired effect. The Corolla Hatchback is EPA-rated for up to 35 mpg in combined driving. ## Interior The Corolla Hatchback has a simple cabin with seating for five passengers. It comes standard with sport seats, cloth upholstery, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, push-button start, and proximity keyless entry. Options include faux leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, and a moonroof. The hatch offers 17.8 cubic feet of cargo space, which is 4.7 cubic feet more than the Corolla sedan’s trunk. Toyota offers a tire inflation kit, which can be swapped out for the spare tire at no cost, to increase cargo capacity. ## Technology The 2024 Toyota Corolla Hatchback comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen, and a 7-inch digital gauge cluster is available. Other standard features include Bluetooth capable of dual-device pairing, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Apple Music and Amazon Music access, HD Radio, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The system is generally user-friendly, though there are no physical audio controls on the dash, so even the simplest functions must be accessed through the touchscreen interface. ## Safety The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the Corolla Hatchback a Top Safety Pick rating, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the Corolla a five-star overall rating, with a four-star rollover rating. Standard safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, traffic-sign recognition, a rear-seat alert system, automatic high beams, and a reversing camera. Rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring are optional. ## Pricing As of this writing, Toyota lists pricing for the 2024 Corolla Hatchback starting at $23,505 for the SE trim (note that the base LE trim is only available for the sedan model). The Nightshade model starts at $24,505, and the XSE starts at $26,805. The SE Premium Package, available on both SE and Nightshade trims, adds blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, and wireless device charging for $605.
