CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback
overall

Summary
With 201 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,513.00, 26.4% of 2019 Toyota Corollas Hatchbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
70.6% of 2019 Corolla Hatchback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
With the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback, Toyota takes a big leap forward in small-car style and sophistication. It stands out as a more stylish, more sophisticated, and better-to-drive hatchback, and it also offers excellent value for money along with premium interior materials. Those strengths make it appealing to buyers who want a compact car that feels a little more upscale than its price might suggest.
The tradeoffs are just as clear. The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback is described as having fairly pedestrian performance, a cramped back seat, and not much cargo space. Owner feedback lines up with that basic picture, while also pointing to a smooth ride, great fuel economy, easy maneuverability, and a fun driving experience. For shoppers who prioritize efficiency, city-friendly size, and a polished cabin over outright space or speed, that combination gives the Corolla Hatchback a distinctive appeal.

Amazing Car, easy and comfortable to drive. Love it

Reviewed a 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback on Sep 27, 2022
Rating is for SE Upgrade Edition (Canadian) (4.5 stars so I rounded up) We bought this car (used) as a commuter for me, and it was a downgrade from our main / previous car, a BMW. So there was a bit of a learning curve (nowhere near the zip, altogether different brakes) but the majority of cars Ive driven have been Toyota sedans / hatchbacks, so it felt very similar to those. Pluses: It is so compact and easy to park - I am a nervous driver, but find I am able to park in tight lots without too much stress. Fun to drive at a low price point (not just up front, but gas - it sips regular & maintenance is very reasonable). Zippy enough for my husband, who is more of a car guy. Fits me well (Im 57) and feels good when driving. My much larger husband (62, muscular build) fits and can drive it comfortably. SE Upgrade version has heated steering wheel (yay) and the nicer wheels. This model also has heated seats, backup camera, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise, lane departure warning, emergency braking, and probably some features Ive forgotten. Minuses: Very little cargo / passenger space. I took a road trip with 2 other people, and between us and our luggage, almost every available inch of the car was full (well, we didnt block the rear window). It may have 3 rear seats, but the passengers would all have to be quite small. It feels like less storage than our coupe BMW had. I have 2 family members with Honda Fits (2013 & 2016) and Fits have amazing cargo space in comparison. Not a lot of leg room for front passenger. There was a fuel pump recall, which the dealer took care of (but be aware and check the records). I find that it hesitates a little sometimes when trying to turn quickly from a stop or slow (like when trying to turn left or right when theres a gap in traffic). Im not sure if its just because the car is less powerful than our old one but Ive tried to change my driving techniques to make sure I look for larger gaps. Overall, this is not my dream car but it is the right car for me, and the car I can afford to drive and maintain at this time. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable, inexpensive, fun vehicle.

The trade-offs are clear: the expert review calls out fairly pedestrian performance and notes that the back seat and cargo area are limited. That means you should think of this as a smart, city-friendly hatchback rather than a space-first or speed-first choice.
The market also looks reasonably favorable, with 24.3% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with a smooth ride and a reputation that supports confidence over time. The expert review also emphasizes Toyota’s longstanding reputation for durability, which reinforces the sense that this is a car you can count on.
It also comes with free scheduled maintenance for the first two years of ownership, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about durability and more about whether the car’s compact packaging and driving feel match your needs over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback?
At 70.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and signs of prior repair. Because this model is praised for its cabin quality and efficiency, condition matters a lot: a clean, well-kept example is more likely to deliver the ownership experience you want.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The car is offered in SE and XSE trim. The XSE adds more equipment and a more upscale feel, while the base trim keeps the formula simpler and more affordable.
- Powertrain: A 2.0-liter 4-cylinder is paired with a 6-speed manual, and a Dynamic Shift CVT is available if you want an automatic. The CVT uses a launch gear and pre-programmed ratios to feel more natural, and it includes Eco, Normal, and Sport modes.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, including adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist. Maximum adaptive cruise-control capability requires the CVT, and the available blind-spot warning system does not include rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: An 8-inch touchscreen is standard, along with Apple CarPlay. Android Auto is not included. The system also brings connected navigation, Wi-Fi Connect, Safety Connect, Siri Eyes Free, and Amazon Alexa integration.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert review notes 33 mpg in combined driving as the EPA rating, and the test loop returned 29.2 mpg.
Which 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback trim should I buy?
The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback is offered in 2 trim levels: SE and XSE.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the simpler, more affordable choice if you want the Corolla Hatchback’s core strengths without paying for extra equipment. It still gives you the standard safety suite, the 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and the same basic powertrain choices.
- XSE: This is the best-value trim if you want the most polished version of the car. It adds a more upscale presentation, more technology, and the richer feature set described in the expert review, making it the better pick if you care about cabin quality and equipment.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, but the CVT is required for maximum adaptive cruise-control capability.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find value.
- Deal availability: 24.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 214 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.12% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 70.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,806.87, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback's resale value?
The current average of $17,638 sits slightly below last year's $18,020.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can work against short-term resale gains if you buy at the wrong price. On the other hand, a lower entry cost can help you preserve more of your money if you choose a clean, well-priced example and hold it for a while.
Strong value, good fuel economy, and a reputation for durability can help keep demand steady among used-car shoppers. If you buy carefully, that should support resale better than a less efficient or less trusted compact hatchback.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback safe?
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on every 2019 Corolla Hatchback, and it includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist. The expert review notes that the system generally works well, though the lane-based features can occasionally issue false alerts or intervene in ways you may need to override.
You also get a standard reversing camera and a free 3-year trial of Safety Connect with automatic collision notification and SOS emergency assistance. A blind-spot-warning system is available, but it does not include rear cross-traffic alert.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 24.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.12% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert review says this hatchback is more stylish, more sophisticated, and better to drive than the Corolla iM it replaces.
The bottom line: If you want a compact hatchback with strong value, good fuel economy, and a more upscale feel than many rivals, the 2019 is the right direction to focus on. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep shopping for the cleanest, best-documented example rather than stretching for a higher-mileage car with questionable history.
