CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback
overall

Summary
With 217 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,718, 32.3% of 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
70.5% of 2019 Corolla Hatchback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
With the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback, Toyota takes a big leap forward in small-car style and sophistication. It stands out as a more stylish, more sophisticated, and better-to-drive hatchback, while also offering excellent value for money and premium interior materials. Those strengths make it appealing to buyers who want an affordable car that feels a little more upscale than its price might suggest.
The tradeoffs are just as clear. The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback is described as having fairly pedestrian performance, and it also has a cramped back seat and not much cargo space. Even so, owners often praise its smooth ride, great fuel economy, compact size, tech features, thoughtful design, and easy maneuverability, which help explain why it remains attractive to shoppers looking for a practical hatchback with a bit of personality.

So far, I really like it. It reminds me of two of my previous vehicles: the Honda Fit and the Toyota Prius V, which are both excellent vehicles.

Amazing Car, easy and comfortable to drive. Love it

Rating is for SE Upgrade Edition (Canadian) (4.5 stars so I rounded up) We bought this car (used) as a commuter for me, and it was a downgrade from our main / previous car, a BMW. So there was a bit of a learning curve (nowhere near the zip, altogether different brakes) but the majority of cars Ive driven have been Toyota sedans / hatchbacks, so it felt very similar to those. Pluses: It is so compact and easy to park - I am a nervous driver, but find I am able to park in tight lots without too much stress. Fun to drive at a low price point (not just up front, but gas - it sips regular & maintenance is very reasonable). Zippy enough for my husband, who is more of a car guy. Fits me well (Im 57) and feels good when driving. My much larger husband (62, muscular build) fits and can drive it comfortably. SE Upgrade version has heated steering wheel (yay) and the nicer wheels. This model also has heated seats, backup camera, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise, lane departure warning, emergency braking, and probably some features Ive forgotten. Minuses: Very little cargo / passenger space. I took a road trip with 2 other people, and between us and our luggage, almost every available inch of the car was full (well, we didnt block the rear window). It may have 3 rear seats, but the passengers would all have to be quite small. It feels like less storage than our coupe BMW had. I have 2 family members with Honda Fits (2013 & 2016) and Fits have amazing cargo space in comparison. Not a lot of leg room for front passenger. There was a fuel pump recall, which the dealer took care of (but be aware and check the records). I find that it hesitates a little sometimes when trying to turn quickly from a stop or slow (like when trying to turn left or right when theres a gap in traffic). Im not sure if its just because the car is less powerful than our old one but Ive tried to change my driving techniques to make sure I look for larger gaps. Overall, this is not my dream car but it is the right car for me, and the car I can afford to drive and maintain at this time. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable, inexpensive, fun vehicle.

The trade-offs are fairly clear: expert testing calls out pedestrian performance, and owners note limited cargo space and a cramped back seat. Even so, the car’s practical size and easy maneuverability make it a strong fit if you want a stylish daily driver that’s easy to live with.
The market also looks supportive, with 29.2% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise for the car’s durability, smooth operation, and the confidence it inspires over time.
Expert testing reinforces that impression by noting Toyota’s longstanding reputation for durability and describing the car as likely to last for a long time. It also comes with free scheduled maintenance for the first two years of ownership, which can help reduce early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright reliability and more about finding a well-kept example, since condition and maintenance history will matter more than the model’s basic durability.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback?
At 71.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and signs of prior repair. Because this model is praised for value and durability, condition matters a lot: a clean, well-maintained example is the one most likely to deliver the ownership experience you want.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE and XSE trims differ in equipment and presentation, with the XSE adding a more upscale feel, more technology, and larger wheels. If you’re shopping the lower trim, pay attention to which convenience and interior upgrades you’re giving up.
- Powertrain: You get a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 168 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. A 6-speed manual is standard, and the Dynamic Shift CVT adds launch gear behavior, ten pre-programmed ratios, and manual-shift mode with paddle shifters.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, including adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist. Maximum adaptive cruise-control capability requires the CVT, and blind-spot warning does not include rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: An 8-inch touchscreen is standard, along with Apple CarPlay, fast-charge USB ports, connected navigation app support, Wi-Fi Connect, Safety Connect, Siri Eyes Free, and Amazon Alexa integration. Android Auto is not included.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert test loop returned 29.2 mpg, and the car is described as rated at 33 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback trim should I buy?
The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback is offered in 2 trim levels: SE and XSE.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the trim to focus on if you want the Corolla Hatchback’s core strengths at the lowest entry point. It gives you the standard design, the 2.0-liter engine, the manual transmission, and Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, so it covers the essentials without pushing the price up.
- XSE: This is the better-value choice if you want the more polished version of the car. It adds a more upscale cabin feel, more technology, larger wheels, and the mid-grade infotainment setup, making it the trim that best matches the car’s premium-leaning personality.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on every trim, but maximum adaptive cruise-control capability requires the CVT.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without waiting for a dramatic bargain.
- Deal availability: 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 233 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.50% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,807, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback's resale value?
The current average of $17,716 sits slightly below last year's $17,986.
That tells you the market has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer now but may temper resale gains if you plan to sell soon. The current pricing trend suggests the car is holding value reasonably well, but not appreciating.
For a future seller, the key will be presentation and condition. A clean history, strong maintenance records, and desirable equipment should help your listing stand out in a market where shoppers are still comparing value closely.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback safe?
The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, bringing adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist. You can switch the lane-based systems on and off, which is helpful because they can occasionally issue false alerts or intervene more than you’d like.
A blind-spot warning system is available, but it does not include rear cross-traffic alert, so the standard reversing camera remains important. A free 3-year trial of Safety Connect is also standard, with automatic collision notification and SOS emergency assistance.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.50% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Expert testing highlights that it is more stylish, more sophisticated, and better to drive than the Corolla iM it replaces.
The bottom line: The 2019 Corolla Hatchback makes the most sense if you want the redesigned hatchback experience, strong owner satisfaction, and a market that still offers some negotiating room. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you should focus on the cleanest, best-documented example you can find rather than chasing the lowest sticker price alone.
