CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Subaru Legacy
Summary
With 88 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,375, 27.3% of 2017 Subaru Legacy listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Subaru Legacy 5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru Legacy stands out as a midsize sedan that makes all-wheel drive part of the package rather than an upgrade. That alone gives it a clear identity, and it also helps explain why the Legacy has long appealed to buyers who want a practical sedan with a stronger sense of security in poor weather. In this generation, Subaru also leaned hard into safety and technology, making the Legacy feel more modern and better equipped than many shoppers might expect from a mainstream family sedan.
For 2017, the Legacy offered a broad set of standard and available equipment, including EyeSight, adaptive cruise control, auto vehicle hold, automatic climate control, LED headlights with automatic high beams, remote keyless entry, auto stop/start, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel drive. The lineup also included a turbocharged engine on the top XT trims, while the standard engine was reworked for better fuel economy and more horsepower. That combination of standard traction, useful tech, and a choice of powertrains makes the 2017 Legacy appealing to buyers who value capability and everyday comfort more than flash.
There are tradeoffs, though. The Legacy’s pros are balanced by dull styling, an interior that can feel cheap, and sluggish performance. Even so, owners often praise its all-wheel drive, fuel efficiency, comfortable interior, and user-friendly technology, which fits the car’s overall mission well: a sensible sedan that emphasizes confidence, comfort, and safety over excitement.

For the year, the car has a great amount of modern features. Drives great in the snow, is comfortable with plenty of room, driver assistance features all worked as they should. The only thing missing is Apple CarPlay/android auto. You simply cannot compare anything to the Legacy. Maybe a BMW 5 Series. In terms of value - the legacy wins every time.

Is the 2017 Subaru Legacy a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Subaru Legacy earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to very strong owner satisfaction.
Owners consistently praise its all-wheel drive, fuel efficiency, and high safety ratings. They also highlight the comfortable interior and user-friendly technology, which fits well if you want a practical midsize sedan for everyday commuting and bad-weather confidence. With 30.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive offer.
Is the 2017 Subaru Legacy reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback emphasizes that the Legacy feels dependable, trouble-free, and well suited to long-term use, especially if you value all-wheel drive and a calm, practical ownership experience. That said, used-car reliability still depends on how the specific vehicle was maintained, so a careful inspection matters if you want to reduce long-term ownership risk.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Legacy?
At 56.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Put inspection priority on body condition, panel alignment, paint consistency, and signs of past collision work. It also makes sense to focus on the interior and technology features, since owners value the comfortable cabin and user-friendly equipment.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Legacy?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 628 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.94% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,271, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru Legacy's resale value?
The current average of $12,943 sits slightly below last year's $13,198.
That softer pricing suggests the Legacy is in a buyer-friendly phase, which can make it a little harder for a future seller to command top dollar right away. On the other hand, the model’s practical appeal, standard all-wheel drive, and strong owner satisfaction help support steady demand. If you buy well now and keep the car in good condition, you should be in a better position when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Legacy or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.94% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 is a strong choice if you want the Legacy’s core strengths at a softer price point, especially if all-wheel drive, comfort, and owner satisfaction matter most. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby years to see whether a slightly older or newer example gives you a better mix of condition, mileage, and asking price.
