The Legacy is the nicer and larger of two sedans in Subaru's lineup, nestled firmly in the midsize family-sedan class. It was redesigned in 2015 and given a major revamp in 2018, so 2019 brings small changes. In the most basic Legacy, you’ll find a 2.5-liter horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine with 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. If that’s not enough, there’s a 3.6-liter horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine that makes 256 hp and 247 lb-ft. Both engines are paired to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), and like most Subarus, it drives all four wheels courtesy of the brand’s symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD) system with active torque vectoring. The Legacy’s fuel economy ratings are decent across the board: 25 mpg city, 34 highway, and 29 combined for the 4-cylinder, versus 20, 28, and 23 for the 6-cylinder. The Legacy consists of five trims: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Sport, 2.5i Limited, and 3.6R Limited. Base features on the 2.5i include the 4-cylinder engine, wheel covers, a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and USB ports. A redesigned instrument panel with a 5.0-inch LCD display is standard as well. The 2.5i Premium adds 17-inch alloy wheels, a 10-way power driver’s seat, an all-weather package with heated front seats, and a moonroof. The 2.5i Sport bundles 18-inch wheels, keyless access and start, a two-tone interior, a sport grille and rocker panels, LED fog lights, and a rear spoiler. Opt for the 2.5i Limited, and things start to get nice, with a 12-speaker, 576-watt sound system, leather upholstery, premium 18-inch alloy wheels, and LED fog lights. The 3.6R Limited is the same, but gets the beefier 6-cylinder engine. Subaru has always been a beacon of safety, but competitors like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry have caught up, so the automaker has extended more crash-preventative technology to the base 2.5i trim. In addition to a reversing camera, all models now come standard with Subaru’s EyeSight technology suite, which includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep assist. Blind-spot monitoring, lane-change assist, and rear cross-traffic alert are now standard for the 2.5i Sport grade and above. The Subaru Legacy sailed through its most recent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tests in 2018 and earned Top Safety Pick+ status, the agency’s highest award. The Subaru Legacy is on the back half of its life cycle, but still remains competitive with pleasing styling, standard AWD, and all the safety features you’ll want or need.
