Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza a good car?

Generally — the 2017 Subaru Impreza earns a 4.33/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating, which lines up with its appeal as a practical sedan or hatchback with standard all-wheel drive. The overview and expert notes both point to a car that is affordable, safe, and useful, especially if you want something more car-like than a crossover. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.

The market also shows 29.9% of listings as good or great deals, so you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza reliable?

Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The overview points to strong owner loyalty around the Subaru brand, and the expert notes reinforce that this is a car built around practicality and everyday usefulness. The performance writeup also suggests the drivetrain is tuned for commuting rather than hard use, which generally supports a simpler ownership experience. Subaru’s CVT behavior is described as improved for 2017, which is a helpful sign for day-to-day drivability.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a practical car can still hide wear if it has been heavily used, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Impreza?

At 59.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision or shows signs of uneven wear. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, interior wear, and how the drivetrain behaves in normal driving, since this model’s value comes from being practical and dependable rather than flashy. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example is usually worth paying more for.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: In 2.0i trim, you get a 5-speed stick shift, cloth seats, a 4-speaker sound system, and manual climate control, while Premium adds an automatic transmission and more options. Sport adds torque vectoring and an optional stick shift, and Limited can be ordered with leather, a moonroof, and upgraded infotainment. The base trim is the most stripped-down, so you should expect fewer comfort and convenience features there.
• Powertrain: Every trim uses Subaru’s 2-liter, 152-hp, 4-cylinder boxer engine, paired with a continuously variable transmission. The engine is described as underpowered for highway on-ramps and uphill driving, but the CVT helps deliver up to 38 mpg highway and 28 city.
• Safety package: EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it can alert you if you stray from your lane, automatically brake in an emergency, and adjust cruise control to follow traffic. On Premium, it adds $1,395 and is bundled with blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.
• Infotainment: Every 2017 Impreza comes standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, so even the base car gives you smartphone integration for music, podcasts, and navigation. The top trim can be ordered with upgraded infotainment.
• Fuel efficiency: The CVT helps the Impreza get 38 mpg highway and 28 city.

Which 2017 Subaru Impreza trim should I buy?

The 2017 Subaru Impreza is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.0i, Premium, Sport, Limited.

Here's the short version:

• 2.0i: This is the entry point, and it gives you the essentials: a 5-speed stick shift, cloth seats, a 4-speaker sound system, and manual climate control. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into standard all-wheel drive and can live without extra comfort features.
• Premium: This trim adds an automatic transmission and opens the door to more options, and it is also the trim where EyeSight can be added for $1,395. It looks like the best-value choice if you want a more livable daily driver without jumping to the top trim.
• Sport: This version adds torque vectoring and can still be had with an optional stick shift. Choose it if you want the most engaging setup in the lineup while staying within the standard Impreza range.
• Limited: This is the most upscale version, with available leather, a moonroof, and upgraded infotainment. It suits you best if comfort and convenience matter more than keeping the price down.

EyeSight is available on the Premium trim, and it also brings blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Impreza?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 854 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.87% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 59.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,991, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Subaru Impreza's resale value?

The current average of $12,583 sits slightly below last year's $12,822.

That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now, but it also means future resale gains may be limited unless you choose a clean, well-kept example. If you plan to sell later, condition and accident history will matter a lot because buyers will likely compare your car against a fairly broad pool of listings. The strongest resale candidates will be the ones with clean records, good maintenance, and desirable equipment.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza safe?

The 2017 Subaru Impreza is a Top Safety Pick Plus from the IIHS and earns a top five-star safety rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes lane-departure alerts, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. On Premium, it also comes with blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights. One caveat is that the cruise-control behavior described here can shut off after the car has been stopped for more than 3 seconds, which is worth understanding if you spend a lot of time in traffic.

Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Impreza or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.87% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It stands out as one of the few sedan or hatchback choices with standard all-wheel drive, while still being affordable, safe, and practical.

The bottom line: If you want a used compact car with standard all-wheel drive, strong safety credentials, and everyday practicality, the 2017 Impreza is an easy year to consider. If you’re more price-sensitive, the softer market and decent deal share make it worth shopping carefully for a clean example rather than rushing into the first one you see.
