What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?

At 53.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with family-hauling wear and tear. Focus on body condition, interior condition, and evidence of proper maintenance, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been kept. If you’re shopping a feature-rich trim, make sure the equipment actually works as advertised.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base L trim includes automatic headlights, windshield-wiper heaters, tri-zone automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a rear-view camera in a 6.1-inch touchscreen, Siri Eyes Free, and 17-inch alloys. The LE adds heated side mirrors, power-sliding doors, an 8-way power driver’s seat, an upgraded stereo with HD and satellite radio, 6 speakers, a 7-inch touchscreen, privacy glass, body-color trim, easy-clean fabric, and Scout GPS Link app compatibility. The SE adds a stiffer sport suspension, tighter steering, 19-inch wheels, a power liftgate, leather upholstery and steering wheel, heated front seats, a unique gauge cluster, foglights, LED running lights, a mesh grille, and side skirts. The SE Premium adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a rear-seat entertainment system with a Blu-ray player, HDMI and SD inputs, dual 120-volt power supplies, dual-screen rear entertainment, enhanced smartphone integration, and navigation. The XLE adds fake wood trim, a 4-way power passenger seat, power rear quarter windows, keyless entry and ignition, and the XLE Premium adds rear parking sensors. The Limited adds premium leather, LED running lights, auto power-folding mirrors, a heated steering wheel, navigation, a 10-speaker JBL Surround Sound audio system, sunroofs, and parking sensors front and back. The Premium sub-trim adds rear-seat entertainment, xenon headlights with auto high-beams, auto wipers, and third-row leatherette.
• Powertrain: Every Sienna uses a 3.5-liter V6 with a 6-speed automatic transmission. FWD versions are rated at 18 mpg city/25 highway and 21 mpg combined, while AWD versions drop to 16/23 and 19 combined.
• Safety package: Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning can be added via packages or standalone options. The Advanced Technology package is available for FWD Siennas, and the AWD versions do not get that package.
• Infotainment: Base models use a 6.1-inch touchscreen, while higher trims move to a 7.0-inch touchscreen and enhanced connectivity. Rear entertainment with Driver Easy Speak is a standout feature, and the system can be paired with navigation on upper trims.
• Fuel efficiency: FWD versions return 18 mpg city, 25 highway, and 21 combined, while AWD versions return 16 city, 23 highway, and 19 combined.

Which 2016 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Sienna is offered in 6 trim levels: L, LE, SE, SE Premium, XLE, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the value starting point if you want the essentials without giving up useful family-friendly equipment. You still get automatic headlights, tri-zone climate control, a rear-view camera, Siri Eyes Free, and 17-inch alloys, so it covers the basics well.
• LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the most obvious everyday upgrades, including power-sliding doors, an 8-way power driver’s seat, a larger touchscreen, better audio, and Scout GPS Link compatibility.
• SE: Choose this if you want the firmer suspension tuning, sharper steering, and a more distinctive look, along with leather, heated front seats, and a power liftgate.
• SE Premium: This is the pick if rear-seat entertainment and added safety tech matter most, since it layers in blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, navigation, and the Blu-ray rear entertainment system.
• XLE: This is the comfort-focused choice if you want a more upscale cabin without the SE’s sportier setup, plus keyless entry and ignition.
• Limited: This is the top luxury-oriented choice, with premium leather, a JBL audio system, heated steering wheel, navigation, and parking sensors front and back.

The safety package note to keep in mind is that blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning are available through packages or standalone options, and the Advanced Technology package is limited to FWD Siennas.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on strong listings.

• Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,396 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.08% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 53.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $16,192, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Toyota Sienna's resale value?

The current average of $17,204 sits slightly below last year's $17,936.

That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a better entry point today. For a future seller, the recent decline means resale upside may be more modest in the near term unless the vehicle is especially clean, well equipped, and well maintained. Even so, the Sienna’s family appeal and broad feature set should help it stay relevant with shoppers who want a practical minivan.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna safe?

The 2016 Toyota Sienna earns top scores overall from both NHTSA and IIHS, though the NHTSA total frontal crash and IIHS small overlap frontal-crash tests received the second-highest ratings.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety content points to traction and stability control, a full airbag suite including driver’s knee and curtain-length airbags, and available blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning. That gives you a strong safety foundation, especially if you choose a well-equipped trim or option package. The noted caveat is that not every test result was perfect, so you should still pay attention to the exact trim and equipment level you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 53.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.08% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 adds Siri Eyes Free and a broad tech upgrade that makes it especially appealing for family use.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $15,623, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,204 average.
• It is described as the best version of the Sienna yet, with broad improvements and stronger safety.

The bottom line: If you want the better-equipped, more current-feeling choice, the 2016 is the stronger pick. If your priority is saving money and you’re comfortable with an older model year, the 2015 is the value alternative worth cross-shopping.
