Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Drivers consistently describe the Sienna as comfortable, spacious, and well equipped, and the review summary also highlights value and luxury features on higher trims. The expert notes add that the Sienna has long been a class leader for reliability and that it remains a strong value proposition for buyers who want a dependable family vehicle. Toyota also includes a maintenance perk in the expert commentary: the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a model with this much content can still carry age-related wear, so condition and service history matter.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?

At 55.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a lot of family-use wear. Focus on the condition of the cabin, sliding-door operation, and any signs of uneven maintenance, since those are the kinds of issues that can affect day-to-day ownership. If you’re comparing trims, make sure the equipment on the listing matches what you expect from the badge on the tailgate.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base L trim already includes automatic headlights, windshield-wiper heaters, tri-zone automatic climate control, a rear-view camera, Siri Eyes Free, and 17-inch alloys, while the LE adds heated side mirrors, power-sliding doors, an 8-way power driver’s seat, an upgraded stereo, and a larger touchscreen. The SE adds a stiffer suspension, 19-inch wheels, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and sport-themed exterior details, while the XLE and Limited move further up the comfort and convenience ladder.
• Powertrain: Every Sienna uses the same 3.5-liter V6 with a 6-speed automatic transmission, making 266 hp and delivering 18 mpg city/25 highway for FWD versions. AWD versions are less efficient, and the setup is tuned more for smooth family hauling than for excitement.
• Safety package: Available driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning. The Advanced Technology package is available for FWD Siennas, and some features are not available on AWD versions.
• Infotainment: Base models use a 6.1-inch touchscreen, while higher trims move to a 7.0-inch screen and add enhanced connectivity. Siri Eyes Free is standard, and the rear entertainment system is a major family-friendly upgrade.
• Fuel efficiency: FWD versions return 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, while AWD versions drop to 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway.

Which 2016 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Sienna is offered in 6 trim levels: L, LE, SE, SE Premium, XLE, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the value play if you want the essentials without overpaying. You still get a long list of standard equipment, including tri-zone climate control, a rear-view camera, Siri Eyes Free, and 17-inch alloys, so it covers the basics well.
• LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds power-sliding doors, an upgraded stereo, a larger touchscreen, and more convenience features without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• SE: Choose this if you want the sportier suspension tuning, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a more distinctive look. It’s the trim to consider if ride feel matters to you.
• SE Premium: This is the family-tech upgrade, adding blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a rear-seat entertainment system, and navigation. It makes sense if you want the most feature-rich SE.
• XLE: This is the comfort-focused choice if you want to skip the sportier setup and move into a more upscale cabin with added convenience features.
• Limited: This is the top-end pick for shoppers who want the most luxury and equipment, including premium leather, navigation, a heated steering wheel, and a premium JBL audio system.

The safety-package trim note to keep in mind is that the Advanced Technology package is available for FWD Siennas, and some driver-assistance content is not offered on AWD versions.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.

• Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,478 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.95% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 55.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $16,191, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Toyota Sienna's resale value?

The current average of $17,656 sits slightly above last year's $17,318.

That modest increase suggests the Sienna has held value reasonably well, which is a good sign if you plan to sell later. A stable price trend like this usually means buyers still see the model as a practical, desirable family vehicle. Because demand remains steady and the market still shows a meaningful share of good deals, a well-kept example should remain relatively easy to move when it’s time to trade in or sell privately.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna safe?

The 2016 Toyota Sienna earns top overall scores from both NHTSA and IIHS, though NHTSA gave it a second-highest frontal crash result and IIHS gave it a second-highest small overlap frontal-crash result.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

You also get a full suite of airbags, traction and stability control, and available driver-assistance features such as blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning. The expert commentary notes that the Sienna’s crash-test performance is strong overall, but the frontal-crash and small-overlap results are the main caveats to keep in mind when you compare it with other family haulers.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 55.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.95% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 stands out for its broad utility, strong technology, and family-focused value.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $15,506, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,656 average.
• The 2015 is described as the best version yet, with broad upgrades and improved safety.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package, the 2016 is the better target because it combines solid owner satisfaction, good market availability, and a well-equipped cabin. If your priority is saving money, the 2015 is the smarter value play, especially if you find one in excellent condition.

How does the 2016 Toyota Sienna compare to the 2016 Honda Odyssey?

Our experts score the 2016 Toyota Sienna 7.7/10 and the 2016 Honda Odyssey 8.2/10.

The Odyssey earns the higher expert score, but the Sienna offers a stronger average used price and a slightly better good-and-great deal share. The Sienna also has the edge in horsepower, while the Odyssey is more efficient and has a lower average used price. If you want the better value for features and power, the Sienna is compelling; if you want the stronger overall expert pick and better fuel economy, the Odyssey is the one to beat.
