What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Avalon?

At 55.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any prior collision. Focus on bodywork quality, tire condition, brake feel, and whether the hybrid system behaves smoothly in normal driving. Because this model is a hybrid, you should also pay attention to how it drives under load and whether any warning lights or unusual noises appear.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Limited trim stands out with leather and chrome, while the base XLE Plus includes dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, heated mirrors, auto headlights, keyless entry and ignition, and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. The XLE Premium adds navigation, a 9-speaker stereo, driver memory settings, wireless smartphone charging, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind-spot monitoring.
• Powertrain: The Avalon Hybrid uses a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and a Ni-MH battery pack for a combined 200 hp. It is rated at 40 mpg city and 39 highway, and the electric motor’s low-end torque helps it feel responsive in everyday driving.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense adds a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, auto high-beam adjust, and dynamic radar cruise control. That package is optional, so you should confirm whether a given car has it.
• Infotainment: The upgraded Entune system uses a 7-inch touchscreen with smartphone-app integration. The XLE Premium adds navigation and a 9-speaker stereo, while the Limited upgrades to the JBL premium system with 11 speakers.
• Fuel efficiency: The Avalon Hybrid is rated at 40 mpg city and 39 highway, and the expert review notes a nearly 700-mile range thanks to the 17-gallon fuel tank.

Which 2016 Toyota Avalon trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Avalon is offered in 3 trim levels: XLE Plus, XLE Premium, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• XLE Plus: This is the entry point, but it still brings a strong equipment list with dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, heated mirrors, auto headlights, keyless entry and ignition, and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. It makes sense if you want the Avalon experience without paying for extras you may not use.
• XLE Premium: This is the best-value choice if you want the most useful upgrades for the money. It adds navigation, a 9-speaker stereo, driver memory settings, wireless smartphone charging, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind-spot monitoring, which makes it the sweet spot for many used buyers.
• Limited: This is the most upscale version, with tri-zone climate control, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a power rear sunshade, xenon headlights, ambient lighting, and the JBL premium audio system. Choose it if you want the most comfort and luxury features.

Toyota Safety Sense is optional, so check whether the car you’re considering has it.

• Price trend: Prices are up 8.09% year-over-year.

The bottom line: The 2016 is a strong pick if you want a comfortable, efficient sedan with high owner satisfaction and a refined feel. If you’re price-sensitive, keep an eye on lower-priced listings and prioritize condition, accident history, and whether the car has the safety package you want.
