Why it stands out
People are drawn to the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee because it offers the ability to go almost anywhere at almost anytime and to do almost anything. That broad capability is a big part of its appeal, especially for buyers who want an SUV that feels ready for more than just daily commuting.
The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee stands out for three main reasons: it can tow a fair amount of weight, it can go far off the pavement, or it simply appeals to buyers who like Jeep’s styling and image. Those strengths make it distinctive, but they also come with compromise, so shoppers should expect to give up some practicality in exchange for its more specialized abilities.

After driving it for the first time I knew I wanted it. I had to have some things line up for me to be able to buy it but they did and I was able to bring it home. The style, comfort and luxury are more than I ever could’ve asked for.

Rides and handles great. The 3.0L diesel runs awesome and gets excellent fuel mileage. Can't hear the diesel at all on the road. The looks of the GC are so sexy!

2016 Jeep Cherokee - great everyday vehicle. Super comfortable and great capabilities. 4x4 with all the comfort of a fine leather chair. Mudd/rocks no problem. Highway driving @ 80 mph no problem. Plenty of space for all my sh...stuff. :) This is our fourth GC and fifth Jeep overall. No complaints.

If you find a listing below $13,271.49, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee a good car?
Yes — 4.8/5 owners rate it 4.8/5, and the expert rating is 6.83/10. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, performance, and luxurious features, along with the spacious interior and powerful engine choices. The overview also points to its towing ability and off-pavement capability, which makes it especially appealing if you want an SUV that can do more than daily commuting. That said, you should expect some compromise in practicality and everyday refinement.
With 30.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to comfort, performance, and luxurious features, while also highlighting the spacious interior and powerful engine choices. The expert notes also warn that reliability predictions are unimpressive and that this SUV asks you to accept some tradeoffs for its capability and image. Jeep’s own performance notes add that the engine warranty was reduced for 2016, which is another detail worth keeping in mind.
For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is worth taking seriously, especially if you plan to keep the vehicle for many years.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
At 59.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Focus on signs of prior body damage, uneven wear, and any evidence that the vehicle has been used hard off-road or for towing. Because this model’s appeal comes from capability, you’ll want to make sure the specific example you’re considering still feels tight, clean, and well maintained.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Jeep sells this SUV in Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT model series. The base setup can leave you without some of the upscale touches and added equipment found higher up the range, while the Overland test vehicle showed how much more polished the cabin can feel with upgraded trim and equipment.
- Powertrain: The standard 3.6-liter V6 makes 295 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, tows up to 6,200 pounds, and delivers strong acceleration. The optional 5.7-liter V8 is for maximum towing, which rises to 7,400 pounds.
- Safety package: The optional Advanced Technology package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. It is a pricey upgrade, so check carefully whether a used example has it.
- Infotainment: Uconnect uses an 8.4-inch color touchscreen in the Overland, with Siri Eyes Free and Do Not Disturb added for 2016. The system is easy to use, but the navigation response and connected services feel dated.
- Fuel efficiency: Official fuel economy rises from 19 mpg combined to 21 mpg. In testing, the Grand Cherokee Overland 4WD averaged 18.7 mpg, while the optional diesel V6 returned 22.9 mpg in a prior test.
Which 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee trim should I buy?
The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in 5 trim levels: Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: Laredo is the entry point, so you should expect fewer luxury and convenience features than the higher trims.
- Sweet-spot trim: Limited is the best value pick if you want a more upscale feel without moving all the way to the premium end of the lineup.
- Premium/top trim: Overland adds a more luxurious cabin and the kind of equipment that makes the Grand Cherokee feel more special day to day.
- Off-road trim: SRT is the performance-focused choice, but it is not the one to buy if you want the most typical daily-driver experience.
The safety package note to keep in mind is that the optional Advanced Technology package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find opportunities.
- Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,500 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.56% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,271.49, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee's resale value?
The current average of $13,272 sits slightly below last year's $14,675.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point. For a future seller, it also means there may be less room for appreciation if the model continues to soften. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you can still protect more of your value over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee safe?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says this model does not meet the criteria for a Top Safety Pick nomination because of a Marginal rating in the small overlap frontal impact test.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The optional Advanced Technology package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. That package is a meaningful safety upgrade, but it is not standard, so you should verify whether a used example has it. The lack of a federal crash rating at the time of testing is another reason to inspect the exact vehicle carefully.
Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.56% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 model adds updated fuel-saving hardware and a more modern infotainment experience.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $11,791, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $13,272 average.
- It offers a broad range of trims and engines for buyers who want more flexibility.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $14,579, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $13,272 average.
- It emphasizes a broader luxury-and-capability identity with strong owner praise.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price and current-market availability, the 2016 is the sensible starting point. If your priority is spending less, the 2015 is the better value play. If you want to stretch for a newer model and can pay more, the 2017 is the natural upgrade path.
