How much does the 2016 Hyundai Sonata cost?

Prices have softened 6.97% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,429 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Sonata a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Hyundai Sonata earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Cost effectiveness.

Reviewers consistently praise its features, comfort, and overall value, and they also highlight the technology and the condition of the vehicle even after substantial mileage. That lines up with the overview’s focus on a well-rounded midsize family sedan that emphasizes thoughtful design, engineering, and ergonomics over flash.

With 26.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Sonata reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Reviewers describe it as reliable and note that many owners appreciate how well it holds up even after substantial mileage. The expert evaluation also points to a car that is thoroughly capable and built around best-practice design, engineering, and ergonomics, which supports the sense that it should be dependable in everyday use.

Hyundai’s cost-of-ownership pitch also helps here, with a class-leading warranty and roadside-assistance plan adding peace of mind for used buyers. For long-term ownership, your biggest risk is buying a neglected example, so condition and maintenance history matter.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Hyundai Sonata?

At 53.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision or shows uneven wear. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, tire wear, and signs that safety systems or electronics may have been repaired poorly. A clean-looking car can still hide past damage, so documentation matters.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes SE, Sport, Sport 2.0T, Limited, and Limited 2.0T. The SE is the most basic version, while the Limited 2.0T adds the most equipment, including more advanced safety and convenience features.
• Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 185-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, while turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder versions add 245 hp and stronger torque for more punch.
• Safety package: Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are included on the test car, while the Limited 2.0T adds forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, adaptive high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear parking-assist sensors.
• Infotainment: Android Auto is standard in all Sonatas, and Blue Link subscription services are included across the lineup. The Limited 2.0T adds a navigation system, a premium sound system, and upgraded instrumentation.
• Fuel efficiency: The turbocharged test car returned 25.5 mpg in mixed driving and was estimated at 26 mpg combined.

Which 2016 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 5 trim levels: SE, Sport, Sport 2.0T, Limited, Limited 2.0T.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the value-focused choice if you want the Sonata’s core strengths at the lowest entry point. It gives you the basic midsize-sedan formula without the extra equipment that pushes higher trims upmarket.
• Sport: This trim adds a more distinctive look and a stronger feature set than the SE, making it a good middle-ground pick if you want a little more style without jumping to the turbo models.
• Sport 2.0T: This is the best-value trim if you want the turbocharged engine and a more engaging setup. It adds the 245-hp 2.0-liter turbo engine and sport-tuned hardware, but it also rides firmer, so it suits you best if you value stronger acceleration over comfort.
• Limited: This is the comfort-oriented upgrade if you want a more upscale feel without going all the way to the turbo Limited. It builds on the Sonata’s already polished cabin and adds more premium touches.
• Limited 2.0T: This is the most fully equipped version and the one to target if safety tech matters most. It adds forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, adaptive high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear parking-assist sensors.

The safety-package trim note is simple: the Limited 2.0T is the trim that brings the most advanced driver-assistance equipment.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Hyundai Sonata?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,429 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.97% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 53.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,166, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?

The current average of $9,166 sits slightly below last year's $9,853.

That price movement suggests the Sonata has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. Because the market is softer than it was a year ago, your resale outcome will depend heavily on how well you preserve condition and documentation. A clean history and strong maintenance records should help you stand out when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Sonata safe?

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata earns an Acceptable rating in the IIHS small overlap frontal-impact test and a four-star rollover resistance rating from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Sonata includes blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert, and the Limited 2.0T adds forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, adaptive high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear parking-assist sensors. The IIHS also rates the forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking technology at a Superior level of performance on the Limited 2.0T.

The main caveat is the Acceptable small-overlap result, which is one step below Good and keeps the Sonata from earning the top IIHS designation for that year.

Should I buy a 2016 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 53.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.97% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It’s a thoroughly capable midsize sedan that emphasizes value, comfort, and thoughtful design over emotional appeal.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $8,800, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $9,166 average.
• It’s a refined, practical sedan with broad strengths for comfort and everyday usefulness.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market mix of value, satisfaction, and available inventory, the 2016 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the smarter price-sensitive alternative.

How does the 2016 Hyundai Sonata compare to the 2016 Toyota Camry?

Our experts score the 2016 Hyundai Sonata 7.8/10 and the 2016 Toyota Camry 7.2/10.

The Sonata gives you the better value proposition here, with a lower average used price and a stronger expert score. The Camry counters with more listings and a slightly higher share of good and great deals, but it also costs more on average. If you want the better-equipped bargain, the Sonata is the more compelling pick; if you want a broader shopping pool, the Camry has the edge.
