CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Hyundai Sonata

Summary
With 138 currently listed for sale near Baltimore, MD and an average price of $10,727, 36.2% of 2017 Hyundai Sonatas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Hyundai Sonata 4.36 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Hyundai Sonata stands out as a midsize sedan that was built to offer a lot of car for the money. It was part of the seventh generation, which was meant to be a tech-forward and efficient sedan with an affordable price tag, and it came with generous standard equipment for the class. Standard features included a 3.5-inch LCD screen, blind spot monitoring, alloy wheels, Bluetooth, and a tilt-and-telescope wheel, while later in the model run the optional 8-inch touchscreen added Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. That combination of value, equipment, and comfort is a big part of the Sonata’s appeal.
It also offered a broad range of powertrains and trims, including a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, a 1.6-liter turbocharged four, and a turbocharged 2.5-liter four in the Sport 2.0T and Limited 2.0T. The hybrid arrived for the 2016 model year and added another efficiency-focused option, with the standard Hybrid and plug-in hybrid both joining the lineup then. Safety was another strength: the Sonata earned Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ designations from IIHS every year it was on sale in this generation. Buyers should still weigh the drawbacks, though, because this generation is known for engine trouble and theft vulnerability, and Consumer Reports gives the 2017 and 2018 models well below-average reliability ratings.

I bought a Sonata with the SE trim, so no power seats, blind spot indicator, heated seats or anything like that. However, it does have TPMS, Apple CarPlay, great backup camera, lots of rear seat leg room and is very solid and comfortable. Gets great gas mileage too! Overall, an excellent value.

Is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Hyundai Sonata earns a 4.36/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers commonly praise its dependability, affordability, and smooth driving experience, and many also like the good gas mileage and overall value for the price. That fits a sedan aimed at giving you a lot of car for the money, with a comfort-and-features focus that works well if you want a practical midsize family car. With 29.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.36/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers’ feedback highlights dependability and a generally trouble-free ownership experience, along with praise for the car’s value and smooth driving feel. Some owners do mention concerns about theft and engine reliability in higher-mileage vehicles, so reliability looks strongest when you focus on well-maintained examples. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is manageable if you verify maintenance history and avoid neglected cars.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Sonata?
At 53.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection on any car that looks especially cheap or unusually well equipped. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of prior damage or repair quality, since those details matter more when you’re shopping a model with mixed history exposure. If a car has higher mileage, give engine-related checks extra attention.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Sonata?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,425 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.51% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 53.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,798, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $10,031 sits slightly below last year's $10,504.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained. If you keep the car clean, documented, and accident-free, you’ll be in a better position when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.36/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.51% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.36/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $9,384, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,031 average.
- It emphasizes competence, comfort, and value over excitement.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $11,994, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $10,031 average.
- It adds more technology and a broader, improved feature set.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, owner satisfaction, and available inventory, the 2017 is the primary path to consider. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 is the better price-sensitive alternative, especially if you’re willing to trade away some of the 2017’s market freshness.
