How much does the 2016 Hyundai Sonata cost?

Prices have softened 6.46% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,433 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Sonata a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Hyundai Sonata earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Cost effectiveness.

Reviewers consistently praise its features, comfort, and overall value, and they also call out the technology and the vehicle’s condition even after substantial mileage. That lines up with the Sonata’s role as a practical midsize family sedan that emphasizes thoughtful design, engineering, and ergonomics over flash. If you want a well-rounded sedan that feels easy to live with, the data points in that direction.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Sonata reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Reviewers describe the Sonata as reliable and note that many owners feel confident in its long-term usefulness. The expert evaluation also points to better-than-average reliability and quality levels, along with a car that remains satisfying even after substantial mileage. Hyundai’s warranty and roadside-assistance coverage add to the ownership appeal.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about day-to-day dependability and more about making sure the specific car has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by heavy use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Hyundai Sonata?

At 53.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or visible cosmetic wear. Focus on how the car presents inside and out, since condition and maintenance history matter a lot in a used midsize sedan. If a listing looks unusually cheap, make sure the savings are not hiding prior damage or deferred upkeep.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE, Sport, and Limited trims give you different equipment levels, and the base trim is the most stripped-down of the group. The cabin is described as simple, cohesive, modern, and refined, but the more expensive trims add the features that make the car feel more upscale.
• Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 185-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, while Sport 2.0T and Limited 2.0T models get a 240-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. The turbo version brings stronger low-end torque and a more robust power delivery.
• Safety package: Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are included on the test car, while the Limited 2.0T adds forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, adaptive high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear parking-assist sensors. Those advanced features are a major reason to consider the higher trim.
• Infotainment: Android Auto smartphone integration is standard in all Sonatas, and Blue Link subscription services are included across the lineup. The system also provides automatic collision notification, SOS emergency assistance, remote start and door-lock access, and stolen-vehicle recovery service.
• Fuel efficiency: The Sport 2.0T returned 25.5 mpg on the test loop, just shy of the EPA’s 26 mpg combined estimate.

Which 2016 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, Sport, Sport 2.0T, and Limited 2.0T.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Sonata lineup and are comfortable with the most basic equipment set.
• Sport: This trim adds a more distinctive look and a stronger feature mix than the SE, making it a good middle-ground choice if you want a nicer feel without jumping to the top end.
• Sport 2.0T: This is the best-value pick if you want the turbocharged engine and stronger performance without paying for the most expensive trim. It brings the more powerful 2.0-liter turbo setup and a sport-tuned chassis.
• Limited 2.0T: Choose this if you want the most advanced safety and convenience equipment, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, adaptive high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear parking-assist sensors.

The Limited 2.0T is the trim that adds the most important safety package upgrades.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Hyundai Sonata?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,433 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.46% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 53.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,214, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?

The current average of $9,214 sits slightly below last year's $9,850.

That softer pricing suggests the Sonata has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help limit near-term value loss for a future seller. The current market also shows enough demand to keep the car moving, especially when the listing is clean and well-priced. If you buy carefully now, you may have a better chance of avoiding the steepest part of the depreciation curve.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Sonata safe?

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata earns an Acceptable rating in the IIHS small overlap frontal-impact test and a four-star rollover resistance rating from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Sonata’s blind-spot warning system and rear cross-traffic alert are the key everyday safety technologies on the test car. If you move up to the Limited 2.0T, you also get forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, adaptive high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear parking-assist sensors. The expert review specifically highlights the forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking as a strong reason to upgrade.

The small overlap result is the main caveat to keep in mind when you’re shopping used examples.

Should I buy a 2016 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 53.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.46% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The expert review says it is thoroughly capable, but not especially engaging.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $8,789, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $9,214 average.
• It is a refined, more polished take on the Sonata with broad owner praise for comfort and value.

The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced shopping opportunity, the 2016 is the stronger primary target because pricing has eased and the market still offers a meaningful number of deals. If your priority is simply spending less up front, the 2015 is the better value play, especially if you find one in strong condition.
