How much does the 2016 Ford Mustang cost?

Prices have softened 5.83% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,785 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 Ford Mustang a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Ford Mustang earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its fun and smooth ride, performance, and handling, and they also like the stylish design and the value it offers compared with similar cars. For you, that means this is a strong fit if you want a classic-looking performance car with updated tech and a broad mix of appearance and performance packages. Good and great deals account for 31.3% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 Ford Mustang reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a car people enjoy living with over time, especially because of its fun driving character, smooth ride, and overall value. The expert test-drive notes also emphasize that the Mustang remains a capable, confidence-inspiring pony car with a modernized chassis and strong performance. Ford’s maintenance-friendly ownership pitch is reinforced by the broader cost-effectiveness discussion, which frames the car as a relatively attainable sports car to own.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that condition and maintenance history matter a lot, especially if the car has been modified or driven hard.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford Mustang?

At 56.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has performance upgrades or signs of hard use. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and whether the car’s equipment matches the trim you’re considering. If you’re shopping a convertible, pay extra attention to top operation and overall wear.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base car comes with 17-inch alloys, automatic xenon headlights and LED taillights, keyless entry and ignition, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, and MyKey, while higher trims add features like power front seats, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, ambient lighting, and the upgraded infotainment system.
• Powertrain: The lineup includes a V6, a turbocharged 4-cylinder, and a V8, with the V6 rated at 300 hp and 280 lb-ft, the turbo four at 310 hp and 320 lb-ft, and the V8 at 435 hp and 400 lb-ft. Efficiency varies by engine and transmission, so match your choice to how you plan to drive.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and a full suite of airbags. Premium Mustangs can add adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning, and all Mustangs can add front and rear parking sensors.
• Infotainment: Sync 3 is the key tech upgrade, and the EcoBoost Premium gets an 8-inch touchscreen with a 9-speaker setup. The larger screen is a meaningful step up, but some owners still wanted Apple CarPlay.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 returns 17 mpg city and 28 highway with the 6-speed manual, or 22 mpg combined with the automatic. The turbo 4-cylinder is rated at 22/31/26 with the manual or 21/32/25 with the automatic, while the V8 returns 15/25/19.

Which 2016 Ford Mustang trim should I buy?

The 2016 Ford Mustang is offered in 5 trim levels: V6, EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, GT Premium.

Here's the short version:

• V6: This is the simplest way into the Mustang, but it still brings a strong standard equipment list and the 300-hp V6. It makes sense if you want the Mustang look and feel without chasing extra features.
• EcoBoost: This trim adds the turbocharged 4-cylinder and is the better pick if you want stronger efficiency and a lighter-feeling car. It also opens the door to the Performance Package, which adds sport suspension, upgraded brakes, and other hardware upgrades.
• EcoBoost Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds Sync 3, an 8-inch touchscreen, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and other comfort upgrades.
• GT: Choose this if V8 power is your priority. You give up some premium features, but you get the bigger engine, bigger brakes, and available line-lock and launch control.
• GT Premium: This is the most complete choice if you want V8 performance without giving up the nicer cabin and tech upgrades. It restores the premium equipment and can be paired with the Performance Package for Brembo brakes and a Torsen limited-slip differential.

Premium Mustangs can also add adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford Mustang?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.

• Deal availability: 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,785 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.83% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 56.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $18,382, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Ford Mustang's resale value?

The current average of $18,553 sits slightly below last year's $19,701.

That decline suggests the Mustang has been moving in a buyer-friendly direction, which can make it easier for future sellers to compete on price. If you own one, you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and whether the car has been modified. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should still draw attention, but the broader trend points to some depreciation pressure.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Ford Mustang safe?

The 2016 Ford Mustang earns a five-star rating from NHTSA and a Good rating from IIHS.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and a full suite of airbags help support that result. If you want more driver assistance, Premium Mustangs can add adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning. All Mustangs can also add front and rear parking sensors, which can be especially useful on a car with a prominent front splitter.

Should I buy a 2016 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 56.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.83% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Ford added Sync 3, new appearance packages, and the GT Performance package for the convertible.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $19,600, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $18,553 average.
• It was a redesigned anniversary-year Mustang with a big improvement in dynamics and technology.

The bottom line: The 2016 is the better all-around buy if you want updated tech, more package variety, and a lower average price. If you’re mainly chasing the anniversary-year redesign story, the 2015 still has appeal, but the 2016 gives you the stronger shopping case for most used buyers.

How does the 2016 Ford Mustang compare to the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro?

Our experts score the 2016 Ford Mustang 7.5/10 and the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro 7.3/10.

The Mustang is the better value here, with a lower average used price and more listings to choose from. The Camaro has the edge in fuel economy and a slightly lower accident-free share, but the Mustang brings stronger owner satisfaction and a broader mix of trims and packages. If you want the more affordable and more plentiful used performance car, the Mustang is the easier recommendation.
