Summary
With 213 currently listed for sale near Minneapolis, MN and an average price of $35,995, 13.1% of 2016 Ford Mustangs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Ford Mustang 4.85 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
66.7% of 2016 Mustang models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford Mustang stands out because Ford chose not to treat it as a simple carryover after the car’s 50th anniversary year. Instead, it brought back some old favorites and added new surprises to keep the pony car feeling fresh. Among the notable updates were hood-mounted turn signals that first appeared in ’67, along with new Black Accent and California Special packages.
It also gained the Sync 3 infotainment system just in time for the Mustang’s 51st birthday. Another meaningful change was that the GT Performance package finally became available for the convertible. Together, those updates give the 2016 Mustang a mix of heritage touches and modern convenience that helps it feel distinctive.
Owners also tend to praise the 2016 Ford Mustang for its fun and smooth ride, performance, handling, stylish design, and value compared with similar cars. Some drivers, however, noted missing features like Apple CarPlay, and fuel economy drew mixed reactions on certain models.

So beautiful, top up or down its a head- turner. Super comfortable to drive around town or on the highway, all good. Ford did a good job on the infotainment, plug and play to use Google maps. The sport mode really gets it while normal mode helps save gas. Best in class cargo means you can fit your stuff no problem. I have the 6 speed stick, notchy and fun all the time. The 4 cylinder turbo engine Ecoboost means the car is way lighter than the GT which makes this really easy to drive and nimble. The brakes are great. At 34,000 and have no issues, very reliable. I love this car. What a delight. They say things dont make your life better but this car proves otherwise!

The premium is the perfect mix of luxury meets sport. Plenty of options included adds lots of comfort. And this GT is fast with amazing handling and control. My wife can take it to the grocery store without being scared of it and I can drop it in sport mode and tear up the asphalt.

I have a very well equipped Ecoboost Premium. The car rides exceptionally well. The 4 cyl has plenty of power and pulls close to 30 MPG on the highway. The car is a joy to drive and is my 5th Mustang. Having owned some older generations, this is the best one yet. Lots of creature comforts in this model and a nice mix of retro and new.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford Mustang?
At 55.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or driven hard. Focus on overall condition, signs of wear, and whether the equipment level matches the trim you’re considering. If you’re shopping a sports car, the details matter more than usual.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base V6 comes with 17-inch alloys, automatic xenon headlights, LED taillights, keyless entry and ignition, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, and MyKey. Higher trims add features like power front seats, unique wheels, leather upholstery, ambient lighting, heated and ventilated seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control.
- Powertrain: You can choose from a V6, a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder, or a V8. The V6 is rated at 300 hp and 280 lb-ft, the EcoBoost at 310 hp and 320 lb-ft, and the V8 at 435 hp and 400 lb-ft.
- Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and a full suite of airbags. Premium models can add adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning.

- Fuel efficiency: The V6 returns 17 mpg city/28 highway/21 combined with the 6-speed manual, or 22 combined with the automatic. The EcoBoost is rated at 22/31/26 with the manual or 21/32/25 with the automatic. The V8 is rated at 15/25/19.
Which 2016 Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2016 Ford Mustang is offered in 5 trim levels: V6, EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, GT Premium.
Here's the short version:
- V6: This is the value-oriented starting point, and it still comes with a strong standard equipment list for the money. It suits you if you want Mustang style and performance without stretching into higher-priced trims.
- EcoBoost: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the turbocharged 2.3-liter engine and more power while staying below the premium models. It’s a smart pick if you want a more modern-feeling Mustang without paying for luxury extras.
- EcoBoost Premium: This is the trim to choose if you want the better infotainment and comfort upgrades, including Sync 3, an 8-inch touchscreen, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control. It’s the right fit if you want a more complete daily-driver experience.
- GT: This is the choice if V8 power is your priority. It gives you the bigger engine and performance-focused hardware, making it the obvious pick if you care most about straight-line speed and muscle-car character.
- GT Premium: This is the most complete version if you want V8 performance plus the nicer cabin and convenience features. It’s the trim to target if you want the fullest Mustang experience and are willing to pay for it.
Premium Mustangs can also add adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford Mustang?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,820 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.81% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,418.98, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $19,603 sits slightly below last year's $20,378.
That price movement suggests the market has softened, which can be good news if you’re buying now but less favorable if you’re planning to sell soon. If you own one, you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and whether the car has been modified.
Because this model is a sports car, clean examples with desirable equipment should still attract attention from shoppers who want Mustang performance and style. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Ford Mustang safe?

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and a full suite of airbags. Premium models can add adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning. All Mustangs can also add optional front and rear parking sensors.
Should I buy a 2016 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.81% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Ford added heritage touches and fresh packages, including hood-mounted turn signals and the California Special.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $20,227, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $19,603 average.
- It was a redesigned anniversary model with a big step forward dynamically and technologically.
The bottom line: If you want the better shopping environment and the refreshed 2016 packaging, this year is the stronger default choice. If you’re mainly comparing prices and want the earlier redesign year, the 2015 can still make sense, but you’ll want to pay close attention to condition and equipment.
