CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Toyota Tacoma
overall

Summary
With 1,478 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,725, 29.3% of 2015 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Toyota Tacoma 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2015 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a truck built for buyers who care more about rugged capability than modern technology. In its final year of production before a complete redesign, it was available as a limited-production TRD Pro trim that enhanced its off-road ability in a Baja-flavored way. That focus gives it a clear identity: it is the kind of Tacoma meant for drivers whose destinations are far off the beaten path.
At the same time, the Tacoma’s age is part of the story. From a technological standpoint, it definitely shows its age, and that can make it feel less current than some shoppers may want. It also may not serve as a versatile family vehicle, so its appeal is narrower than some trucks in the segment. Even so, for buyers who value reliability, a rugged look, and a truck with real off-road talent, the 2015 Toyota Tacoma has a straightforward and appealing purpose.

This truck has a lot of cool features although it's lacking power seats. I would compare it to the Nissan Frontier and Ford Ranger.

The Gen 2 Tacoma VVI 4.0 L cycl. motor is relatively maintenance free . Change the oil religiously every 5 to 7500 k mi. And you should expect 300,000 plus. Mi.s What the Tacoma lacks in technology and fine durable finishes it makes up in worry free workhorse performance and longevity. And perhaps moreover long-term resale value!

There are 1,473 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2015 Toyota Tacoma a good car?
Generally — 4.33/5 — the 2015 Toyota Tacoma earns a 6/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Cost effectiveness.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, rugged look, and powerful engine, and many also highlight its comfort and spaciousness. That lines up with the truck’s clear use case: it is built for work, play, and off-road-minded buyers rather than shoppers who want the latest technology or the most family-friendly cabin.
With 29.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2015 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner feedback also points to reliability, and the expert evaluation describes it as a durable machine that buyers can count on over time.
The truck’s dependability is reinforced by the expert assessment of its reliability and resale strength, even though the model’s age means you should expect more wear-and-tear variability than you would on a newer truck. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is buying a neglected example, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Toyota Tacoma?
At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used hard off-road or for towing. Focus on signs of body damage, suspension wear, and interior wear, since this model’s appeal often comes from rugged use rather than gentle commuting.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The TRD Pro adds off-road hardware, including an electronically locking rear differential, hill-start assist control, downhill assist control, 16-inch bead-lock-style aluminum wheels, knobby all-terrain tires, and upgraded suspension with Bilstein shocks and increased wheel travel. It also has a unique grille and TRD-badged interior bits, but it lacks step rails, and the cabin materials remain basic.
- Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 is the core engine, and the test truck’s optional supercharger raises output from 236 horsepower to 295 horsepower and torque from 266 lb-ft to 318 lb-ft. The added power makes the truck feel much quicker, but it also brings a noisy character and thirsty fuel use.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes 6 airbags and Smart Stop Technology. The test truck also had a reversing camera and downhill assistance control, but the truck’s safety equipment is otherwise limited for the class.
- Infotainment: The standard setup centers on a 6.1-inch touchscreen with USB 2.0, Bluetooth pairing, and music streaming. The premium setup adds Entune App Suite smartphone integration, a reversing camera, navigation, a JBL premium sound system, voice recognition, satellite radio, predictive traffic and weather reports, and HD Radio.
- Fuel efficiency: The test truck averaged 15.1 mpg, and the expert notes that the 4.0-liter V6 gets 18 mpg in normal form.
Which 2015 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2015 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 1 trim level: TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
The TRD Pro: is the clear choice if you want the most off-road-focused version of this Tacoma. It adds the suspension upgrades, locking rear differential, all-terrain tires, and other trail hardware that define this truck’s personality, so it suits you best if capability matters more than comfort or modern tech. It is also the best fit if you want the most distinctive look and can live with the basic cabin and limited convenience upgrades.
The safety package is limited overall, so even this trim still leaves you with a truck that asks you to prioritize capability over advanced protection tech.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Toyota Tacoma?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.
- Deal availability: 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,473 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.25% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,440, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $20,703 sits slightly below last year's $20,964.
That mild decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may slightly temper what a future seller can ask in the near term. Even so, the Tacoma’s pricing remains relatively resilient, and the truck’s reputation for durability helps support demand.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The 2015 Toyota Tacoma gets a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, and in IIHS testing it earns Good ratings, though it has not been tested for small overlap frontal-impact protection. It also has a Marginal roof crush strength rating.
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
The safety package includes 6 standard airbags and Smart Stop Technology, with an optional reversing camera and downhill assistance control on the test truck. The main caveat is that the truck’s safety performance and equipment are limited compared with newer rivals, so you should not expect a modern suite of driver-assistance features.
Should I buy a 2015 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It is the final-year Tacoma before a complete redesign, with a limited-production TRD Pro that emphasizes off-road capability.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $24,185, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $20,703 average.
- It brings a redesign with 29 configurations and broader cab-and-drive-layout flexibility.
The bottom line: If you want the lower-priced, final-year version with a strong off-road identity, the 2015 is the better value play. If you want the redesigned truck and are willing to pay more for broader configuration choices, the 2016 is the better long-term alternative.
