What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?

At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on body condition, frame condition, and signs of hard use. Because this truck is often bought for work and off-road duty, you should pay close attention to wear that may not show up in photos alone. If a listing looks especially clean, confirm that the equipment and condition match the seller’s description.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup starts with the hard-working SR and continues to the well-equipped SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and the range-topping Limited. SRs and SR5s feature fabric-trimmed seats, while the TRD versions have unique upholstery and the Limited gets premium leather. The SR is the most stripped-down choice, while the higher trims add more comfort and refinement.
• Powertrain: The Tacoma offers a carried-over 2.7-liter 4-cylinder and a new 3.5-liter V6. The 4-cylinder makes 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque, while the V6 makes 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. The V6 is described as smoother and more efficient, and it pairs with a 6-speed automatic or manual transmission.
• Safety package: The Toyota Star Safety System™ includes vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology. The truck also includes driver and passenger knee airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, and active headrests. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts are available, but not every trim gets the same equipment.
• Infotainment: SR models get Entune audio, SR5 adds Entune Audio Plus with a 6.1-inch touchscreen and Scout GPS Link, TRD models get Entune Premium Audio with a 7-inch touchscreen, navigation, and an App Suite, and Limited models get Entune Premium JBL Audio. Bluetooth, touchscreen controls, voice recognition, and Siri Eyes Free are standard, but there is no WiFi hotspot capability.
• Fuel efficiency: The 4-cylinder returns 19 mpg city/23 highway with RWD, while the V6 returns 19/24 with RWD and 18/23 with 4WD. The expert drive also cites 18 mpg city/23 highway for the V6 4WD test truck.

Which 2016 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 5 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• SR: This is the work-focused starting point, with fabric-trimmed seats and standard Entune audio. It makes sense if you want the Tacoma’s core durability and capability without paying for extra comfort or tech.
• SR5: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds Entune Audio Plus, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, and Scout GPS Link while staying close to the entry price. If you want a more livable daily driver without jumping too far up the ladder, this is the trim to target.
• TRD Sport: This trim moves you into the more feature-rich middle of the lineup with unique upholstery and Entune Premium Audio. It suits you if you want a nicer cabin and more tech without going all the way to the off-road-focused model.
• TRD Off-Road: This is the choice for buyers who want the Tacoma’s trail-ready character, with extra skidplates, Bilstein suspension dampers, and an off-road-tuned suspension. It also adds the kind of hardware that supports serious dirt-road use.
• Limited: This is the most upscale version, with premium leather and the Entune Premium JBL Audio system. It fits you best if comfort and cabin polish matter more than rugged simplicity.

The TRD Off-Road trim adds the most obvious off-road hardware, while the Limited is the most comfort-oriented choice.

What is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $23,592 sits slightly below last year's $24,301.

That softer pricing can work in your favor if you buy now, because you may be entering ownership at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, the current trend suggests the Tacoma is still holding value well relative to many used vehicles, even if prices have eased from a year ago. Its reputation for durability and strong demand should help support a healthier exit price than you might see with less sought-after trucks.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.92% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 brings a redesigned body, a new V6, and a major tech upgrade.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $20,223, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $23,592 average.
• It is a rugged, off-road-focused pickup with a limited-production TRD Pro trim.

The bottom line: If you want the newer truck with better tech, stronger refinement, and broader trim choice, the 2016 is the better path. If your priority is spending less and you mainly want a rugged Tacoma for trail duty, the 2015 can still make sense.

How does the 2016 Toyota Tacoma compare to the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado?

Our experts score the 2016 Toyota Tacoma 7.7/10 and the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado 6.7/10.

The Tacoma asks more money on average, but it also brings stronger resale appeal and a more established reputation for durability. The Colorado is cheaper to buy used and offers better highway fuel economy, but the Tacoma’s broader appeal, higher expert score, and stronger market demand make it the more compelling pick for many shoppers. If you want the better value up front, the Colorado deserves a look; if you want the truck with the stronger long-term case, the Tacoma has the edge.
