What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Chevrolet Colorado?

At 60.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used for hauling or commuting in tight urban conditions. Focus on body condition, bed wear, and signs that the truck has been worked hard, since the Colorado’s appeal depends heavily on getting the right mix of capability and condition.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Base comes with LED headlights, a 6-speaker stereo, a power driver’s seat, and a USB port, while the LT adds power mirrors, an additional USB port in the center console, and 4G LTE hotspot capability. The Z71 adds a power-locking tailgate, heavy-duty suspension, all-terrain tires, and remote start.
• Powertrain: You can choose from a 200-horsepower inline-4, a 305-horsepower V6, or a 2.8-liter Duramax diesel with 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The diesel delivers the strongest low-end pull and the best fuel economy in the lineup.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes dual-stage front impact and side impact airbags, OnStar crash response, and a backup camera. Available driver aids include lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert, and the driver’s-side mirror includes a wide-angle inset mirror to help reduce the left blind spot.
• Infotainment: MyLink uses a 4.2-inch color screen in base form, while other models get an 8-inch touchscreen. It supports Apple CarPlay, voice control, and navigation input through the system.
• Fuel efficiency: The diesel gets 22 mpg city, 31 highway, and 25 combined with rear-wheel drive, while the 4WD diesel returns 20/29/23. The 3.6-liter V6 with 4WD gets 17/24/20.

Which 2016 Chevrolet Colorado trim should I buy?

The 2016 Chevrolet Colorado is offered in 4 trim levels: Base, WT, LT, and Z71.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the entry point, but it still gives you LED headlights, a 6-speaker stereo, a power driver’s seat, and a USB port. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Colorado, though you give up some convenience and connectivity features found higher up.
• WT: The WT is the work-focused choice if you want a straightforward truck without moving into the more feature-rich trims. It fits buyers who care more about utility than extras.
• LT: The LT adds power mirrors, an extra USB port in the center console, and 4G LTE hotspot capability, making it the best-value trim for many shoppers who want a more modern daily driver without jumping to the top end.
• Z71: The Z71 is the most truck-like trim, with a power-locking tailgate, heavy-duty suspension, all-terrain tires, and remote start. It suits you best if you want the most capability-oriented setup.

Safety equipment includes a backup camera on every Colorado, while lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert are available rather than standard.

• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.69% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 60.6% of listings are accident-free.

What is the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado's resale value?

The current average of $17,030 sits slightly below last year's $17,501.

That softer pricing suggests the truck has become a little more buyer-friendly, which can help you if you’re shopping now but may limit upside if you’re planning to resell soon. Still, the Colorado’s mix of utility, size, and broad appeal should help it remain relevant in the used market. Trucks with strong owner satisfaction tend to hold demand better, and this one fits that pattern.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.69% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 stands out for its manageable size, useful versatility, and available diesel power.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $15,969, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,030 average.
• It returned after a hiatus with modern styling, safety, and technology.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market value story and a broad set of listings to compare, the 2016 is the better starting point. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the Colorado’s core appeal.

How does the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado compare to the 2016 GMC Canyon?

Our experts score the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado 6.7/10 and the 2016 GMC Canyon 6.3/10.

The Colorado has the edge in expert scoring and also offers a larger used-market pool, which gives you more choices and more leverage while shopping. The Canyon is priced higher on average, with fewer listings and a lower share of good or great deals, so it may take more patience to find the right one. Both trucks share the same engine, horsepower, and fuel-economy figures in this comparison, so your decision comes down more to value and availability than mechanical differences.
