What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Chevrolet Colorado?

At 62.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, frame condition, and signs of prior repair. Because this truck is often bought for utility, pay close attention to bed condition, interior wear, and whether the truck’s equipment matches how you plan to use it. If you’re comparing multiple listings, focus on condition first and options second.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Base trim comes with LED headlights, a 6-speaker stereo, a power driver’s seat, and a USB port, while the LT adds power mirrors, an additional USB port in the center console, and 4G LTE hotspot capability. The Z71 adds the most truck-focused gear, including a power-locking tailgate, heavy-duty suspension, all-terrain tires, and remote start.
• Powertrain: You can choose from a 200-horsepower inline 4-cylinder, a 305-horsepower 3.6-liter V6, or a 2.8-liter Duramax diesel with 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The diesel delivers the strongest efficiency, with 22 mpg city/31 highway/25 combined in rear-wheel drive and 20/29/23 with 4WD.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes dual-stage front and side-impact airbags, OnStar crash response, and a backup camera. Available driver aids include lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert, and the driver’s-side mirror includes a wide-angle inset mirror to help reduce the left blind spot.
• Infotainment: MyLink uses a 4.2-inch color screen in base form, while other models get an 8-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay is included, and the system supports voice control for navigation and media functions.
• Fuel efficiency: The diesel gets 22 mpg city/31 highway/25 combined with rear-wheel drive and 20/29/23 with 4WD. The 3.6-liter V6 with 4WD gets 17/24/20.

Which 2016 Chevrolet Colorado trim should I buy?

The 2016 Chevrolet Colorado is offered in 4 trim levels: Base, WT, LT, and Z71.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the entry point, and it gives you the essentials, including LED headlights, a 6-speaker stereo, a power driver’s seat, and a USB port. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Colorado, but it is the most stripped-down choice.
• WT: The WT is the work-oriented step up, and it is the trim to consider if you want a straightforward truck without chasing extra comfort or convenience features. It fits buyers who care more about utility than amenities.
• LT: The LT adds useful everyday upgrades such as power mirrors, an additional USB port in the center console, and 4G LTE hotspot capability. This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it improves convenience without pushing you into the highest-priced trim.
• Z71: The Z71 is the most truck-focused version, with a power-locking tailgate, heavy-duty suspension, all-terrain tires, and remote start. It is the right pick if you want the most rugged-feeling Colorado in this lineup.

The available safety features include lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert, while the backup camera and OnStar crash response are standard.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Chevrolet Colorado?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,469 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.80% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 62.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $16,876, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado's resale value?

The current average of $17,226 sits slightly below last year's $17,722.

That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy a clean, well-equipped truck that will stay attractive to used-truck shoppers. Models with the diesel engine, strong condition, and desirable equipment should hold broader appeal than bare-bones examples.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado safe?

The Colorado earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes dual-stage front and side-impact airbags, OnStar crash response, and a backup camera. Available driver-assistance features include lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert, and the driver’s-side mirror includes a wide-angle inset mirror to help reduce the left blind spot.

The main safety caveat is that some of the more advanced driver aids are optional rather than standard, so you should verify the exact equipment on any used listing you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 62.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.80% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds a stout diesel engine that gives the Colorado extra distinction in the midsize truck class.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $16,120, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,226 average.
• It returns after a hiatus with modern styling, safety, and technology.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around shopping case, the 2016 is the better target because it combines a softer price trend, broad inventory, and the diesel option. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 can still make sense, especially if you find a clean example with the features you want.
