CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Subaru Forester
overall

Summary
With 2,372 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,327, 31.4% of 2015 Subaru Foresters for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Subaru Forester 4.67 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
63.9% of 2015 Forester models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Subaru Forester stands out as a crossover that puts value and safety ahead of flash. It earned a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and it was also named Best Value. The expert test drive data describes it as a strong choice for buyers who do not care about the latest tech or the most luxurious interior, which helps define its appeal: it is practical, well-regarded, and easy to recommend for shoppers focused on substance.
It also benefits from being fresh off a 2014 redesign, which had already drawn praise. Motor Trend named it SUV of the Year, and the test-drive summary says that after a week in a 2.5i Premium trim, the reviewer understood the enthusiasm a little better. Owner feedback reinforces the Forester’s reputation for smooth handling, a spacious interior, comfort, safety features, fuel efficiency, and practicality, while also noting concerns about reliability and an infotainment system that can feel outdated.

Reviewed a 2015 Subaru 2.5i Limited on Jun 11, 2014
After 10 years with my old car, I have been checking out what's on the market. I hadn't considered a Subaru until someone suggested how much their friend liked their new Forester. So, not expecting much, I test drove one, three times so far. I was very favorably impressed. For a SUV, handling was quite nimble but was still comfortable over rough roads, railroad tracks and the like, while remaining solid and quiet. The base 2.5i engine was more than adequate for my needs. The interior is very spacious and the visibility great. The front seats could be a little better, but that can be said about most of the small SUVs on the market, and the overall design and infotainment systems are a bit out of date, but I can forgive that since I value the driving aspects of the car more. Overall, it is a great value for the money, even at the higher trim levels. It's my choice when I trade cars later this summer.

I loved my 2015 Subaru Forester ! It was comfortable and we went everywhere in it. No mountain too tall. Unfortunately it was totaled. We were not hurt due to its safety features. I’m looking for another and possibly a 2016.

I drove several models, but the Subaru Forester had plenty of pep, and was a very smooth operating vehicle. I compared it to the VW Tiguan and the Nissan Rogue. Feature for feature the Forester is the best value for my dollar.

| Year-Round Low | $10,882.32 |
| Year-Round High | $11,546.44 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,552 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.23% |
Prices have softened 2.23% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,386 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $10,882.32, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2015 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the 4.67/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.17/10. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners repeatedly praise its smooth handling, spacious interior, fuel efficiency, and practicality. The overview also frames it as a value-forward compact crossover that appeals if you want usefulness over flash, and the owner feedback lines up with that use case. Good and great deals account for 31.7% of listings, which adds to the appeal if you’re shopping carefully.
Is the 2015 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner summary also points to a vehicle that many drivers find practical, dependable, and easy to live with over time, especially when you value value and everyday usability. The expert performance notes describe it as a good balance for a reliable family and grocery hauler.
The main ownership risk for used buyers is that some listings may hide wear, so you should verify maintenance history and inspect condition closely before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Subaru Forester?
At 64.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can catch prior damage, repair quality issues, or signs of neglect. Focus on overall condition, because the market includes a meaningful number of cars with incident history and you want to separate clean examples from the rest.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The 2.5i Premium trim adds the All-Weather and EyeSight packages in the reviewed example, while the base setup is more stripped back and the cabin and infotainment are described as below par.
- Powertrain: The base 2.5-liter 4-cylinder can be paired with a 6-speed manual or a CVT in the 2.5i and 2.5i Premium, while the turbocharged 2.0XT brings more power.
- Safety package: EyeSight adds pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise, lane-departure and sway warnings, and pre-collision throttle management; it is camera-based and can disengage in low-visibility conditions.
- Infotainment: The standard screen is 4.3 inches, and the optional navigation system uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen; the system is criticized for lag and poor resolution.
- Fuel efficiency: The CVT is rated at 24 mpg city/32 highway, the 6-speed at 22/29, and the turbocharged 2.0XT at 23/28.
Which 2015 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?
The 2015 Subaru Forester is offered in 3 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.0XT.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5i: This is the simplest path into the Forester, and it makes sense if you want the core all-wheel-drive utility without paying for extras.
- 2.5i Premium: This is the best-value trim if you want the most balanced mix of everyday comfort and available safety tech, especially with the All-Weather and EyeSight packages.
- 2.0XT: Choose this if you want the stronger turbocharged engine and are willing to pay for the extra performance.
The safety package is a major part of the Forester’s appeal, and EyeSight is the trim-level feature set to look for if you want the most advanced driver assistance.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Subaru Forester?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to compare listings and wait for the right example.
- Deal availability: 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,386 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.23% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 64.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,882.32, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $11,294 sits slightly below last year's $11,552.
That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices continue to ease. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you can help protect your exit value later. The current market still shows enough demand and inventory movement to support a reasonable resale outlook.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Subaru Forester safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety equipment includes symmetrical AWD, antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and a strong airbag list that includes front pelvis/torso, side-curtain, and driver’s knee airbags. EyeSight adds pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise, lane-departure and sway warnings, plus pre-collision throttle management. The main caveat is that EyeSight is camera-based and can disengage in fog, snow, rain, or bright sunlight.
Should I buy a 2015 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.23% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It pairs a fresh redesign with strong safety and value.
Consider the 2014 if:
- At $10,016, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $11,294 average.
- It emphasizes all-weather confidence and practical versatility.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,824, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $11,294 average.
- It adds a new touchscreen interface and broadens the package appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and owner satisfaction, the 2015 is the smart target. If your budget is tighter, the 2014 can save you money, while the 2016 makes sense only if you specifically want the newer interface and are comfortable paying more.
