CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Subaru Legacy
overall

Summary
With 395 currently listed for sale and an average price of $8,889.00, 29.9% of 2014 Subaru Legacies for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Subaru Legacy 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
58.5% of 2014 Legacy models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Subaru Legacy stands out as a practical family sedan that wins buyers over with substance rather than style. It may not be the prettiest four-door car on the road, but it is described as especially strong in fuel economy, safety, comfort, quality, and in handling harsh weather. That combination makes it appealing for shoppers who want an everyday car that feels well-rounded and dependable.
It also has a reputation for being more capable than its modest power figures suggest. The 4-cylinder engine’s horsepower and torque may look unimpressive on paper, but the CVT is said to make good use of both, so the 2014 Subaru Legacy 2.5i rarely feels underpowered. The same source also calls it fun to drive and good value, which helps explain why it can be an appealing choice even if it does not make the strongest first impression.
There are limits, though. The available information suggests that some buyers may find it lacking in modern tech features compared with competitors. Even so, the 2014 Subaru Legacy’s mix of comfort, efficiency, safety, and all-weather confidence gives it a distinctive appeal for drivers who care more about real-world usefulness than flash.

I Love this car, my favorite color and drives so smooth and can't say enough how much room there is.

Reviewed a 2014 Subaru 2.5i Premium AWD on Sep 9, 2013
When I started researching fuel-efficient all wheel drive vehicles, the Subaru Legacy was at the top of the list. I live in the Northeast, and drive about 40 miles each way (mostly highway) to and from work, and during the winter months, I need AWD. I test drove the 2014 Subaru Legacy and immediately loved that it handles like a sports car, not like an SUV. I also like the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) which makes for a smooth ride and acceleration. But most of all, love the money it will be saving me at the pump! I needed to make sure that it was reliable and safe, so after some additional research, took delivery on my first red car!

I have always heard extremely terrific reviews of Subaru’s, from safety, comfort and milage. These cars last FOREVER! And in my experience, they are not an overly priced car.

How can you go wrong with an all wheel drive car that is always at the top of the charts when it comes to safety and reliability for under $24,000? Do you get all of the technological bells and whistles as some of the other cars in its class? No. But if you just want a solid car that has decent gas mileage, is great in bad weather and can be had for a decent price, then this is the car for you.

Is the 2014 Subaru Legacy a good car?
Yes — the 2014 Subaru Legacy earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its safety, comfort, and reliability, and they also value the all-wheel drive for winter driving. The review summary also points to strong fuel efficiency and a well-rounded, dependable character. That fits the model’s practical family-sedan mission: you’re looking at a car built around everyday usefulness, not flash.
With 29.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Subaru Legacy reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary also highlights reliability directly, along with the idea that you can count on it for dependable everyday use. The expert evaluation reinforces that with strong cost-effectiveness and a long-run ownership outlook that favors sensible buyers. The ownership risk for used shoppers is mainly about condition and maintenance history, so a careful inspection matters.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Subaru Legacy?
At 60.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or visible wear. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car feels tight and well maintained on a test drive. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example is often worth paying a little more for.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.5i is the simplest version, while the 2.5i Premium adds a 10-way power driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a reversing camera, Bluetooth, HD Radio, satellite radio, a USB port, an iPod connection, and an auxiliary audio input jack. The 2.5i Sport adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, fake carbon fiber dashboard trim, a power sunroof, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror with a Homelink universal garage door opener. The 2.5i Premium is the best-value step up if you want more everyday convenience without going all the way to luxury trim.
- Powertrain: The 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine makes 173 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, and the 3.6R Limited uses a 6-cylinder engine with 256 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque. The CVT is described as making the most of the 4-cylinder’s output and helping the car feel less underpowered in real-world driving.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane departure warning. It is available on the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited, but not on the 2.5i Sport.
- Infotainment: Subaru’s Starlink technology is included with the optional navigation system, and it supports iPhone pairing, contacts, calls, and music streaming. The system lacks natural voice recognition, and the touchscreen can be unresponsive.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5i returns 24 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined, and a test car averaged 26.4 mpg.
Which 2014 Subaru Legacy trim should I buy?
The 2014 Subaru Legacy is offered in 5 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Sport, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R Limited.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5i: This is the entry point, and it’s the right pick if you want the lowest-cost way into the Legacy’s standard all-wheel drive and practical sedan formula.
- 2.5i Premium: This is the best-value trim because it adds the most useful everyday upgrades, including the reversing camera, Bluetooth, better audio, and a power driver’s seat.
- 2.5i Sport: Choose this if you care more about appearance and a more distinctive feel, since it adds 18-inch wheels, fog lights, and a sunroof.
- 2.5i Limited: This is the comfort-focused choice, with leather seats, woodgrain trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a premium Harman Kardon audio system.
- 3.6R Limited: Pick this only if you want the stronger 6-cylinder engine and are willing to pay more for it.
EyeSight is available on the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited, but not on the 2.5i Sport.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Subaru Legacy?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 405 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $8,189.24, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Subaru Legacy's resale value?
The current average of $8,892 sits slightly below last year's $8,956.
That small decline suggests the market has been stable rather than volatile, which is helpful if you plan to sell later. A steady price pattern usually means you’re less likely to face a sharp drop in value over a short ownership period. The Legacy’s strong value reputation also helps support demand among used-car shoppers who want a practical sedan with all-wheel drive.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Subaru Legacy safe?
It earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane departure warning. It is not available on the 2.5i Sport, even though it can be added to the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited. The main caveat is the three-star rating in the individual side-impact pole test, which is worth keeping in mind if safety is a top priority.
Should I buy a 2014 Subaru Legacy or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2014 stands out for strong fuel economy, safety, comfort, quality, and all-weather confidence.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $10,606, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $8,892 average.
- It is bigger and more generously appointed.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2014 is the smarter buy because it combines stable pricing, strong owner satisfaction, and broad everyday usefulness. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer redesign and a roomier, more polished cabin, the 2015 is the better secondary path.
