The big news for 1966 was the fact that the Volkswagen Beetle got a bump in power. The popular Bug now came with a 1.3-liter (1285cc) four-cylinder engine that generated 50 horsepower, up from 40 in previous years. To celebrate the increase in power, VW affixed a badge proclaiming "1300" to the rear engine lid.
Volkswagen also made improvements to the front suspension, shock absorbers, wheel bearings, and carburetor for 1966. In addition, the front seatbacks had a locking mechanism, and the half-ring horn returned, replacing a push-button horn.
Other elements of the Beetle remained unchanged. Standard features included swiveling sun visors, coat hooks, assist straps, an automatic windshield washer, an overhead light, a folding rear seat, and storage space under the front hood and in a three-foot carpeted compartment behind the rear seat.

(33 reviews)I bought this car with 64000 miles on it. I am the 2nd owner and I have had 10 Bugs and 2 Buses. This Bug is by far the best car I have ever owned. Cancer free good solid pan, no whining in 4th gear. All rubber and seals are tight. Soon I will repaint and a fresh 1835cc will be done for my son David Jr.
For me the classic Beetle is a love affair; i started my driving career behind the wheel of a Beetle, a 1968 model. Through that car i was exposed to the world of hi performance VW's, all the different custom styles, and the simplicity the cars had. I kid you not, i learned everything about cars on that little '68, even how to rebuild and build engines. Sadly, that car was totaled by a DUI, which led to this car's purchase. I only drove this one for two more years as a daily driver before relegating it to hobby car status, and this year i plan to register it as a full classic (plates and insurance). The driving experience depends on what type of person you are; if you want high speed, on the rails handling, don't look here. This car has understeer until you push it too far, then you suddenly get 'snap' oversteer and swap ends. Stock performance is laughable at best; i know both this 66 and my 68 came with 1600cc engines, which put out 46 hp at best. They didn't get up to speed fast, but you'd get from point a to point b, just not quickly. Because of the age of these cars, you don't have any of the amenities of modern cars: power steering? nope. Power brakes? Psh, dream on. Automatic transmission? Learn to drive a stick ya lazy ass :-p. Only auto these cars had was a flawed 'auto stick' that had to be shifted between ranges and would often either lock in neutral or in one range. Heating is also non-existent; the best heating system for these cars was a good set of gloves and a wool cap. You also need an ice scraper for INSIDE the car if you drive one year round But if you get past all that, the Beetle is a fun car to drive; what other car can you drive that gets you honked at, waved at, puts smiles on kids and adults faces, and always draws a crowd wherever you go.
I loved this car. I wish I had pictures of the interior. They were all done in black and red velvet like material.
I love this car because it has been kept mostly original . It has not been in the hands of antique dealers who detailed the car out making it unaffordable to the general public. It has never broken down on me and cranks right up and goes. These little cars where really made with pride.
this is my callook bug. I own it since 1994 and it has been restored since 1997. It has a hot engine and is very fun to drive. I will always keep this car I guess, unless my son Millo wants it later on. He is now 5 years old and loves to drive it with dady.
