Toyota’s certified preowned (CPO) program has been around since 1996, and the company says it has sold over five million CPO vehicles in that time, making it one of the oldest and most successful of any manufacturer certification programs.

In order to become Toyota certified, a vehicle must meet the following requirements:

• Have less than 85,000 miles • Be within the last 6 model years • Pass a 160-point inspection • Have a clean Carfax vehicle history report

All Toyota models are eligible for the CPO program if they meet the requirements above. The Mirai fuel-cell vehicle is available only through dealers in California, and only to residents of the state that live or work near a hydrogen fueling station.

Warranties

Toyota certified used vehicles come with a comprehensive bumper-to-bumper warranty and a powertrain warranty. Both are transferable without extra charge and are honored at Toyota dealers in the United States and Canada. The company offers extended warranties and vehicle service agreements as well.

Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty
Toyota CPO vehicles come with a 12-month/12,000-mile comprehensive warranty that covers repair or replacement of components that fail during normal use. The coverage applies to equipment that fails due to defect in materials or construction and may not apply if you’ve modified or misused your vehicle.

You can also purchase a vehicle service agreement (VSA) that extends the comprehensive warranty beyond the original 12-month period. Pricing varies per vehicle, but the VSA includes additional benefits outside of standard warranty coverage, including roadside assistance, substitute transportation, travel protection, and full transferability of the extended warranty.

Powertrain Warranty
Toyota includes a 7-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty for every CPO vehicle it sells. It’s completely transferable to any future owners of the vehicle and has no deductible for service visits. The warranty covers items such as:

• Engine components • Automatic and manual transmissions • Axle components • Hybrid/fuel-cell components

Additional Warranties
Toyota offers an extensive line of hybrid vehicles and also sells a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle in certain markets. The company’s warranty coverage is different for these vehicles, and it includes an 8-year/100,000-mile fuel-cell warranty that covers fuel-cell components, hydrogen tanks, air compressors, ECUs, and the power management control module. It also includes an 8-year/100,000-mile hybrid vehicle battery warranty that covers the battery systems. This warranty is transferable at no cost.

Perks

Roadside assistance
Roadside assistance is available for the first year of CPO ownership and includes flat tires, lockout assistance, jump starts, and towing for mechanical breakdowns or collision. Owners can also have fuel delivered if needed, up to 3 gallons and no more than twice per month. Toyota offers reimbursement for towing costs to the nearest service facility. This service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.

Special Financing
Toyota CPO vehicles are eligible to receive the same rates and terms that are offered for the company’s new vehicles. Special rates and incentives are sometimes available, and financing can be done with Toyota’s in-house financial services department.
