96 Explorer AWD Engine Swap of a later 4.0L

Asked by smoky316 Jan 18, 2019 at 07:23 PM about the 1996 Ford Explorer 4 Dr XLT AWD SUV

Question type: General

I have a line on a 1998 4.0L V6 out of a wrecked Explorer.  Will this motor mate
up to a 1996 model?  Transmission, exhaust, etc.  Basically, can I pull the 96
4.0 and drop in the 98 4.0 and hook everything back up?

I would not try to swap a SOHC engine with a push rod engine. For one thing the OHC is not very good.

Then I must either rebuild the one I have, or stick with the 95/96 4.0L out of another junker?
