Will a 96 Ford Explorer  2wd transmission fit
in a 96 Ford Explorer 4wd

It may fit but might not run. You are trying to put a 2WD trans into a 4WD vehicle. It will not have the connections to the transfer case and probably different gearing inside the donor unit.
